Where are all the SYTYCD fans? Season 6 began last night and nobody is talking about the the tap challenge between Ryan and Bianca? How cool was that? I'd love to see the three tappers dance together sometime during the season.

An hour didn't seem to be long enough. We didn't get to see enough of some of the other dancers that got their tickets punched for Las Vegas, but if the first show is any indication, looks like some more good talent this season.

I checked in yesterday to see if anyone had posted and was very surprised not to find a thread. Supposedly the ratings were very much lower than the summer, so maybe people aren't watching?

I thought the tap bit was very good, but a little too contrived. Ryan K's roommate really stood out for me & I think he definitely has top 20 potential. I'm trying to hold back my annoyance for the big push on the just-18 year old blonde who lives in the empty apartment w/ her mom & little brothers to further her dance career. Last season I was opposed to Jeannette going to Vegas & reaching top 20, only to wind up devastated when she was cut because I thought she was clearly the best dancer on the show.

I watched as well and enjoyed it. I do think it is a bit soon after Season 5 though. I think if they had waited and advertised it more they would have gotten more initial viewers. I do think the backstories are a bit much sometimes....if you are a great dancer and have not had personal tragedy should that count against you?

I watched it. I think they need to add tap as one the dances that gets chosen one week. They have every other kind but that. I like tap :)

I love this show - but I also felt like it seemed too soon after the last season. I was having a hard time getting excited about getting to know a whole knew crew of dancers.

I really enjoy the early rounds of AI - but less so SYTYCD. Bad singers seem funnier than bad dancers to me! I like the Vegas round and hope they show more of that.

I watched and liked the tap battle. Sorry, trading ... Is that what they called it?

I'll be more into if Vegas week. I'm not thrilled with the audition shows.

They've got SYTYCD in the same time slot as America's Next Top Model, which also premiered Wednesday night. Plus America's Got Talent is in the semifinals. I think that at least the first two, if not all three, target just about the same audience.

I agree and I'll be watching Tyra instead of SYTYCD. It's just too soon after the last season for me. All of the big reality shows will be starting up over the next couple of weeks - Amazing Race, Dancing With the Stars, Survivor - it will be night to night reality shows once again.

I completely forgot it was on until I was remembering to tivo glee and saw that it was on. I had planned on watching.

I adore tap dancing too and look forward to hopefully seeing tappers in the top 20, but it strikes me as the kind of highly specialized dance where if you don't already know how to do it, there's no way you could learn in a week. Certainly not enough to perform a solid routine on SYTYCD. :confused3 Someone tell me if I'm way off base here...

Rather than having non-tappers try to do tap routines, the choreographers will most likely find ways of incorporating tap into some of the routines that the tappers perform.

The pas de deux (sp?) was like that as well-the female portion anyway, would require a ballet dancer who dances en pointe. They had one in the top 10 this season and were able to choreograph it. (Which tells me that the dance selections are a bit---rigged!)

I have no doubt that if Bianca and Ryan both made it and chanced a match up, that they could choreograph such a routine.

But you are right---the more intricate dances that require specific skills (pointe and tap, can't think of any specific skills like that at the moment), they would not introduce them as dance options for the competition. It simply isn't a skill that someone could acquire in 1 week and have it be passable as a competitive effort if they've never done it before. After 1 month--the teacher tought us my daughters 3rd grade recital routine. I used to find it funny when they clicked at such a slow tempo--well there's a reason. It takes many years to build up that tappng speed. Sad to say that i could not keep up with my 8yo. And she by far is not ready to compete on SYTYCD.

I took tap over the summer--and it takes everything just to get your feet used to "clicking" for certain footwork. Then there's the whole getting used to dancing on a dance floor in tap shoes (that slip!) without busting your butt. Very different than doing heel leads or pointing your toes in a ballroom dance for example.

I think the only "sacred" dances are the ballroom dances which have specific rules and forms. On more than one occasion, they have cross referenced genres and slipped in a little hip hop here, a little ballet there, a jazz hand, etc. But with tap--since it focuses on making sound with your feet, that could come with consequence if it is squeezed in to a routine versus blended into a routine.

Ok - found season 6 and subscribed.

When is the top 20 announced? I just googled the top 20 performance show isn't until Oct 27! I feel like the season is coming to close on the heals of Season 5. I'm kinda not into the auditions. I hope we see more familiar faces ... like Natalie.

Adam Shankman has been added as the 3rd judge.

Adam is my favorite judge so I'm happy about this. I can do without Lil C's rambling, Mia can be nasty (though she toned it down a lot season 5) and Tyce just grates on my nerves. I'll be happy to have many of them just stick to choreography. I wonder if they will rotate a 4th guest judge. They've had 4 with Tabitha and Napoleon and the two hip hop girls.

DD19 auditioned for season six in Phoenix, so we were excited to watch that particular audition show. She gave us a lot of 'behind the scenes' info on the filming which we found very interesting. And we saw her twice during the episode. Both times she was just standing in line, but it was still neat to see her on tv.:)

She arrived very early, along with some of her dance friends. She said the atmosphere was very upbeat and everyone was just having a good time. Cameras were constantly rolling throughout the day, inside and outside the venue. My daughter and her friends got to meet Cat Deeley. She was very friendly and she posed for pictures with them.

It was either a one or two day audition, depending on how far a dancer advanced through the process. All dancers had to be there on Friday, the first day. On Friday, you were either cut after the first audition, given a golden ticket to come back on Saturday or Sunday, or asked to stay for choreography at the end of the day. If you made it through choreography, you got a golden ticket to return on Saturday or Sunday.

DD19 made it through the first day of auditions and got a golden ticket to return on Sunday. At this point in the audition process, none of the dancers even see the judges. There are other SYTYCD personnel running the auditions. My daughter said everything is very controlled once you are inside the building. Auditioners have to sign a ton of paperwork (basically giving SYTYCD the right to use your audition tape in any way, shape or form) and there is a very strict no cellphone rule in effect when you are in the building. Anyone that makes it past the initial cut also signs confidential papers stating that they will not share any audition/filming info with anyone as long as they are still in any stage of the audition process.

It was on the second day of auditions that the dancers were taken into the audition room that you see on tv. My daughter said that there were about 200 dancers in her group on the second day. They were led into the auditioning room where they sat in seats behind the judges' table. They were instructed to stand up and cheer (make a lot of noise!) when the judges entered the room. Mary Murphy, Nigel Lythgoe and Mia Michaels were the judges for the Phoenix auditions. My daughter said the group didn't need a lot of prompting to cheer because they were all genuinely excited to see the judges!

The dancers lined up on stage, ten at a time, and each dancer got the chance to improv to music that was chosen ahead of time by SYTYCD. If the judges wanted to see more, you got another golden ticket that would send you on to the final round where you got to perform a solo in front of the judges. That's the part that is actually shown on tv. If you didn't receive a golden ticket, you were cut. My daughter was cut at this point. Several of her friends were cut the first day and a few also made it as far as my daughter. She was disappointed because she really wanted to perform her solo for the judges, but she was happy to have made it as far as she did! She said it was kind of hard to see dancers get a golden ticket that everyone, including the judges, knew were terrible dancers, or that were obviously there just to try to be on tv. When you see the judges' reactions on tv during the solos, it looks like they don't know which dancers are going to be good and which are bad. Well, they already have a pretty good idea!

DD19 thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend and said it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. She said it was nice to meet so many friendly, positive people, including auditioning dancers and SYTYCD personnel. She also got a kick out of meeting Mary, Mia and Nigel. She said they were very down-to-earth and made all the dancers feel very comfortable. My daughter said she was the first in her group of ten to improv and Nigel asked her, "Are you ready, Mallory? Okay hon, go for it!" She thought it was neat that he said her name! Ha! Ha!

It was interesting to have my daughter point out the editing that was involved when the show was aired. For instance, you can see her group of dancers standing up and cheering several times when a dancer is shown performing a solo in front of the judges. However, they weren't in the room at that time because only the auditioners that got through to the final round were allowed in at that stage of the process. The footage you see on tv is from when the group stood up and cheered when the judges were first introduced to them. If you look closely, you'll see the crowd of dancers cheering from the seats behind the judges, but at other times you'll notice that the seats behind the judges are almost empty.

DD19 also got a kick out of seeing so many people on the episode that she had met throughout the weekend. There was a very tall guy shown auditioning and my daughter has a picture that was taken of her standing next to him. She said someone on the SYTYCD staff took the picture. They thought it was funny because he was so tall and she is so short (barely 4' 11").

Anyway, my daughter and her friends enjoyed the experience and were glad that they auditioned. I just thought readers might find it interesting to read a bit about the audition process!

Thanks for posting your DD's experience! Sorry she didn't make it, but she can try again, right? Several dancers have mentioned that they tried multiple times. It sounds like she had fun regardless.

I'm hoping a tapper makes the top 20.

wow that is really cool luvflorida. I hope she auditions again! There are lots of people who are auditioning over and over again.

...I've got Season 5 SYTYCD Tour 2009 photos if anyone wants me to post them here...

Wow, how exciting for your daughter and your entire family! Thanks for sharing all the backstage goings on. Interesting that the dancers are "pre-auditioned" before the judges ever see them.

If the timing is right, she may audition again. Right now she has a heavy schedule. She is a sophomore in college, dances and choreographs for a local dance company and teaches dance at several studios in the area. By the time the next season rolls around, who knows?:)

Yeah, most of the auditioners are cut the first day. Then they have to survive another cut to even make it before the judges. My daughter said there was a lot of waiting around, especially the first day. If a dancer made it past the first cut, they filled our MORE paperwork and had a short interview with staff members. They were also asked to do some "crazy dancing" while a crew member filmed them. This part is seen on tv when you see a dancer doing something nutty in front of the white background that has "So You Think You Can Dance" written all over it. My daughter said she was asked to whirl around like a helicopter. :confused3:rotfl:

Afterwards, she was afraid that they would show that part on tv and everyone would think she was an awful dancer. However, she realized that even dancers that have made it on the show have been seen doing weird things in front of that backdrop.:rotfl:
