My friend who was visiting and I went to a newer upscale mall yesterday to look around and get ideas for the new business we are starting.

We went into Saks 5th Avenue and have never been looked upon as trash like that before! We weren't only looked down the nose by employees but even by customers.

I didn't know I had to get totally dressed in designer duds to hit a mall! I was wearing jeans and an Old Navy t-shirt - Teresa was wearing shorts and a Gap t-shirt - Reilly was wearing his usual apricot fur ;) (yes, they allow dogs in this mall)

Not one single employee would say as much as "boo" to us. They went out of their way to help customers around us and avoid us. Then I heard two customers walk by and say "Old Navy - I would never shop there" - while rolling their eyes. (I felt like saying "because you couldn't fit in anything there" but I wasn't going to lower myself - well except for the little thing I said under my breath ;) )

Boy, I never knew one could not be comfortable while you shop. We were clean, presentable.. but just because we chose to shop in t-shirts? Yikes. Talk about judging a book by it's cover. Not one of the customers the sales associate waited on bought something. Guess what? I would have. But I didn't! Bad move chick-a-dee!

Have you ever been met with that type of prejudice while shopping? Do you get all dolled up in your designer finest to shop a mall or do you go for comfort?

No wonder I've been avoiding department stores lately

Yes I have and those places dont get my business any more.

Jewelry stores that look at you like you couldnt possibly afford anything in here. Ticks me off to no end

If your not wearing Armani or Brooks Brothers you might as well be naked.

Forget them, dont need them, my money will line someones pocket who treats me like my business matters to them

Sound like Pretty Woman scene

LOL! Well, we didn't have a lot of skin showing like she did - sorry to disappoint ;)

There is an upscale mall located near me. I don't go there very often because most of the shops there are not my style. I don't feel the need to get all dolled up to go shopping. If my jeans and t-shirt aren't good enough for you than my money isn't either.

The mall does have a couple of stores that I do like -- Nordstrom especially. The sales people in Nordstrom are nice though.

Oh, they're just "jealous" 'cause you can afford to shop there, but they can't! ;) :p

We get it all the time. When I am in a city, I occasionally forget that the only color allowed is black! I even own (and wear) pink sweaters (Lands End). I stand out terribly! And they act as though they are doing me a favor, making a commision off of my purchase!

LOL - DD and I just had the complete opposite experience -- I'm not sticking up for Saks by any means, but we were looking for something really specific in makeup and couldn't get a salesperson to save our lives at Nordstom or Sephora!! But at Saks, they not only helped us find it but also showed us how to use it! It really made me not want to go back to Sephora's, so I really know how you feel.

BTW, I many times look like a regular bag lady at the mall. I have no shame. I come from working out, straight from the garden, or straight from the pool!:earseek:

I was new to Raleigh, NC. I went into what I later found out was a VERY exclusive dress shop for that town. I experienced the same thing.

The funny thing was I was looking for something to wear to a very upscale party. I was young - probably "underdressed" for them. ( I really don't remember what I was wearing at the time). I had grown up in Chicago and was thinking that their clothes were just TOO passe for me. The I realized the saleswomen were being total jerks.

I just left - as I was looking a lot of the stores just didn't have what I wanted. They would suggest this store - everytime I would tell them that NO - they will NOT get my business.. laugh..
Don't remember where I ended up getting an outfit .. But I KNOW I NEVER set foot back in that store again - AND felt certain satisfaction when they went out of business!!

I've never had that experience at Saks here (San Antonio) or Chicago - tho' I must admit - these days nothing WILL fit me there.. Must say I do go in to look for accesories, gifts, etc.

These days more than ever there are TOO many options out there to shop! I say - ignore them... move on... OR go in with even more exclusive shopping bags and say VERY loudly "What junk they have in here!" :teeth:

Years ago my dh and dad went to a chrysler dealer in their Sunday working in the yard clothes. Dad had decided he wanted a chrysler imperial and had the cash in his pocket. No one would speak to them. They went down the street and bought a cadillac. later dh drove the cadillac to the chrysler dealer and told them what happened.

Laugh - same thing happened to my machinist Dad - who dropped by a dealer after work - but it was just the OPPOSITE.. He stopped at the Caddy dealer - and ending up buying at Chrysler.. :teeth: Pretty funny!

When I was a kid - he ALWAYS traded in/up every 2 years.. Can't believe that was possible back then. Oh well...

The commedienne Rita Rudner does a great joke about this. She tells of the time in Beverly Hills when she walked into a really exclusive dress shop. After ignoring her for as long as possible, the sales women comes up to her and snootily says "Excuse me. Do you have an appointment?" Rita Rudner responds, "Why do the dresses have someplace else to go?

The opposite has happened to me. I was being treated like royalty at an upscale department store and couldn't figure out why until I realized I was wearing designer jeans that I had bought at a thrift store for $1.00!!! :teeth: I can't remember if I bought anything that day but I thought it was funny that they were going so gaga over someone wearing a pair of jeans that only cost a dollar.

i've been discriminated against while shopping for my weight before. it sucks, doesn't it?

When my husband and I were young 30s we went car shopping. The Buick dealership wouldn't help us with a test drive. All of the salespeople ignored us.

We left and went to the Lexus dealership. They were glad to take us on a test drive. They treated us royally. I bought that Lexus and still have it 11 years later.

You can't judge people when your in sales.

My friend works at Nordstrum and I always tell her I don't have nice enough clothes to shop there even. She says I am wrong, Nordstrums is not that way, but they have a freakin Baby Grand in their store for shoppers listening pleasure!

We have had the same experience at a car dealership. We were interested in a Toyota 4Runner, got treated rudely and went to Land Rover where we purchased our Discovery. We are Land Rover customers for life because we were treated like humans there! AND we are treated with such kindness and respect EVERY time we go back. Makes a huge difference.

Yes, it happened to me at a Naturalizer shoe store. I was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt (not tucked in). I was neat and clean and didn't look sloppy but apparently the sales people preferred waiting on the "nicer" dressed customers first.
