this is what we actually eat in Ireland, why not try something real instead of corned beef

Id love to try this! I can't figure out what the equivalent of the cut of pork would be here. Just ham? A pork tenderloin? Any ideas? I feel silly not knowing.

DH and I hosted the pregame this afternoon for DD’s boyfriend’s 23rd birthday. Her boyfriend lives and is finishing college in our city; she graduated and lives and works 1.5 hours away. The original plan was for all their friends to come here first to pregame before going to Shamrock the Block, a big street party. But it got postponed to the 26th due to snowy weather. So they planned their own pub crawl! They are all dressed up for St Patrick’s Day, and we had a big lasagna lunch with cake and ice cream and lots of drinks! Now I’m relaxing, watching tv, and scrolling through disboards.

Due to scheduling, my sister hosted a St Patrick day luncheon earlier in the month. It was a get together for some summer pool friends, and it was delicious and fun.

Years ago, Marie and I hosted a small, 3 other couples, St Patrick's Day dinner at our house. Maybe 20 years. Stopped at some point, not sure why. My son Vince held St Patrick's Day parties for about a half dozen or so years, with like a hundred people, HUGE. But not now either.

Not sure what Marie and I are doing.

Its salted pork joint which is boiled.

All this food talk reminds me of a St. Patrick's Day tradition from when DS was little - vanilla ice cream with Lucky Charms on top for breakfast. :shamrock:

Lucky Charms are not Irish, they are not sold in Ireland.

No party for us. We do have a local parade that we go to Yearly since we can walk to it. Supposed to be today but not sure with the weather today.

My neighbors have an annual St Patrick’s Day party - so we will go to that next Saturday.
St Patrick’s Day is big around here- I have another neighbor who is originally from Texas and he was pretty surprised by how Boston (and surrounding areas) go all out for St Patrick’s Day.

I have great memories of celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Chicago the years I was there going to school. My friends and I would hop on the El and go downtown to watch the parade and see the beautiful green river. Loved those days! It was always a sign of spring, too. Enjoyed Shamrock Shakes and Chocolate Thin Mints and wearing tons of green. Probably had a few sips of green beer, also. :teeth:

Now I just put a corned beef in the Crock Pot and hope to hear the frogs soon. :shamrock:

.......and of course start watching March Madness!!🏀

I am laughing as I read this as I sense your frustration. I think that you are fighting a losing battle, but at least your American friends are attempting to celebrate their Irish roots. St David’s Day was totally overlooked. I can’t wait until sites such as 23&me and Ancestry start specifically identifying DNA in terms of Scottish, English, Welsh, Irish, Channel Islanders etc. 😉

No corned beef here, but I make a great dish of sausage (crumbled), onions, wide noodles and cabbage. Yum.
Plus the St. Patrick's Day "Potato" from See's!
Hmm...seems to center around food.

My profile was very boring, 85% British and Irish (my dad’s mom was born in Scotland and my mom’s grandparents were all born in Ireland), but my husband’s dad thought he was 100% Italian (his parents were born in Italy and spoke very little English), turns out he’s mostly French (my son is 0% Italian, but has French in him).

We know. Just like we know the Shamrock Shake at McDonald's isn't Irish.

The history behind corned beef and cabbage is due to Irish immigrants who came here and made that because it was more economical. It is our cheap spin off. It has become our homage to our Irish immigrants.

Just like I also know that the Lucky Charms cereal isn’t Irish, but I just bought a box of Lucky Charms for the kids’ breakfast on Thursday. It’s a fun treat.

And, for dinner on Thursday, we’re having corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, & rolls w/ Kerrygold butter. For dessert, we’ll have Irish soda bread & mint chocolate chip ice cream (since it’s green).

Irish person here, living in Dublin. No parties for me, in fact I don't go out anywhere on that day. This year is the first year the parades and official festival is back, it was all cancelled in 2020 and 2021. I might watch the main parade on TV, I might not.

If anyone wants any ideas for food, actual proper Irish food, that people in Ireland eat let me know. Corned beef and cabbage is not an Irish thing, btw. we dont eat that. And please for the love of Mickey Ears its most defiantly not called St Pattys Day.

Since you are in Ireland you might be able to answer this question. My daughter is going to be in Belfast ( I know it is the UK) for St. Patrick's day but do you know of anything special there. They originally were going to be in Dublin but the flight out of Belfast was so much cheaper. They are only there for like 36 hours.

St Patrick’s Day 2022: Events and activities across Northern Ireland this March 17

Belfast city centre

With plenty of hype around Belfast City Council’s 11-day celebratory lead-up to the main events of March 17, there will be no shortage of things to do on St Patrick’s Day itself.

Try the city’s best-poured pints of Guinness at Bittles on Upper Church Lane or Whites Tavern, one of the oldest taverns in Belfast.

Kelly’s Cellars, built in 1720, is also one of the city’s longest-running pubs and will be full of trad music and great Guinness on the big day too. Another fundamentally Irish-themed pub to try is The Points, which will be hosting an all-day Dublin Road block party, to include 20 bands and DJs over six stages inside with free entry.

Of course, this will have to wait until after you attend this year’s new look St Patrick’s Day parade by Beat Carnival — a colourful, carnival pageant of costume, music, dance, circus and theatrical performance.

Watch as Patrick travels through the streets of Belfast with his giant hound, Spiorad-Spirit (spirit of adventure). He’ll be donning a giant cloak, elegantly patchwork-fashioned from expressions of people and groups throughout Belfast.

All manner of individuals and community organisations in the parade will celebrate their part in the future: varied and different yet strongly united by the instinct for moving forwards together — a cavalcade of carnival dancers, circus artists and musicians reminding us that We are all Patrick, we are all Belfast. The pageant parade will leave from City Hall at 1pm and will travel along Donegall Place, into High Street, Bridge Street, Waring Street and finish on Donegall Street close to Writers Square.

Thank you so much. We weren't sure if it would be as celebrated in Belfast as Dublin or other places in Ireland. Her and her friend has quite the outfits planned so it is awesome that they will be able to partake in a cool celebration. My city had the parade this past Saturday and it was 12 degrees, snowing and windy I did not attend. They are currently in Barcelona and will be flying in on Wednesday.

Google is your friend , took me less than 5 seconds to find info... sigh...
