I don’t think I have ever walked into a cash only business.

If I happened to, I would have to leave because I would have no way to pay.

This past weekend was the HOA approved yard sale weekend. Most people had signs saying they accepted CashApp, Venmo, Zelle, etc.

Cash is dead.
Planning a trip to a resort area and thought of you. The restaurant association includes whether a restaurant is credit only, cash only or if they take both. So it is a very real issue these days.

If I counted correctly that is 5 of 28 places that are listed as cash only.

If I did no planning and just showed up it would appear I still have 23 choices. I feel like I could fill my belly with a credit card rather easily.

What would be interesting is that same list 10 years ago. How many were cash only then? More or less?

In my limited travels I have found significantly more places that do not take cash than places that are cash only.

My guess is that their currency is similar to British Pound and that does expire. I had old bills I tried to use years ago at a pub and they wouldn't take them.

You may be able to exchange it, but my paper money wasn't much and not worth the hassle.

I did not know this either. From the Bank of Canada website -

Since January 1, 2021, the Canadian $1, $2, $25, $500 and $1,000 bank notes are no longer considered legal tender. Essentially, this means that you may not be able to use them in cash transactions.

Don’t worry—these bank notes have not lost their face value. Here are your options:

  • redeem your bank notes for face value at your financial institution;
  • redeem your bank notes for face value by submitting a claim to us;
Some bank notes, such as the $25 and $500, may be worth significantly more than their face value to collectors.

https://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknot...ry 1, 2021, the,use them in cash transactions.

That's amazing.

Remember, the fees merchants pay has gone up in the last 10 years so that may have an impact. I have posted before, but the POS system that the gas stations around my area use went down for several hours. The steady stream of people pulling in and asking if the credit card system was working was amusing to those of us paying cash for our gas.

I rarely have cash,
All bills paid online.

I can think of one ice cream shop that was cash only. Only place that is cash only that I’m aware of in a city of almost a million people.

There are a few things I take the time to prep for but the risk of a POS outage for a few hours every few years is not something I am concerned about. Not a reason to make me carry a wallet again. I haven’t carried a wallet or keys for years, just my phone.

Not even your Driver's License?

My phone holds two credit cards and my driver license.

My phone also has my Apple wallet digital id, California just launched it as well, but the laws have not caught up yet. For now the digital id is only useful with the TSA at select airports. Eventually the laws will get updated and it will be accepted by the police.

In an emergency, if you are physically unable to access your digital wallet, is there a way for emergency personnel to access it? I'd be concerned in that case that the list of medications I take, and my Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare would not be accessible.

There is an app bars can use to verify age, I am sure at some point when digital ids are more common place, emergency personal will have access.

The TapID app for iOS is neat.

You launch the app, press the Start Mobile ID Verification button, the person brings their phone near your phone, they then confirm they want to give you access to their ID, and then the DMV picture is displayed in the app together with a notification as to if the person is 21 or not.

Bank facing for me. I was a teller for several years back in the 80s, and I ran a cash register at a convenience store more years then I'd like to remember. We ALWAYS had to have the cash heads up, in denomination order. Makes me crazy to see cash just shoved in DH's wallet. (not that we carry much cash anymore, it all goes on the cc and gets paid off monthly, so we can rack up points with Southwest, Hilton, and Disney!)

Why do buttholes ask stupid questions...

Because they’re buttholes.
Bad day? Or feeling like one yourself?

---

I generally only use a credit card, but I do carry $20, just in case. Ran into a cash-only situation years (decades) ago, and have kept a $20 on me ever since.

Do you have to have your cash organized?
If yes….
Is your cash in dollar amount order, facing the same direction, or both?
(multiple choice)
For Me……Yes, my cash must be in order in dollar amount and direction. I’m neurotic about it, even when playing games like Monopoly.

Yes, absolutely must be by denomination & facing same way, same way up, no wrinkled or folded corners, lol.
It has been many years (20+), but I have worked in the "cash office" of a couple major retailers & counting money, making deposits & filling the register tills were a major part of my day. Bills had to be face up & facing the same way in the tills. Cashier had to have them all straightened out that way also at the end of their shift. Our deposits had to be the same & any cash we received from the banks were all in order too. Made it so much easier to count quickly. Remember when the bank teller would count the bills really quick? Now they just put them in a machine that does the counting for them.

I don't mind going to the bank - I kinda like it actually.
My work doesn't do direct deposit, and I don't like mobile deposit, because then I can't get cash back.
I don't like ATMs because I like my cash back a certain way. When I go to the bank to cash my check, I write on a post it note, how I want the cash back, because I like more small bills then big bills.
I am sounding really high maintenance right now :rotfl:
Not at all high maintenance!
I do a lot of cash deposits for my job & prefer to go inside. We do accept credit cards but no checks & only started with online payments after covid when we started doing a lot of virtual classes.

Saturday I went to the bank to deposit my check and I requested cash back. When I get cash back I always get the following - a $20, two 10s, four 5s and ten 1s - I like having cash on me, especially for tips at a restaurant. I get the cash in an envelope and then transfer the money to my wallet. Yesterday, when I went to put the cash in my wallet, the cash was in dollar amount order, but not all facing the same direction - that drives me crazy. I must have the money in my wallet in dollar amount order, and all facing the same direction. Back in the good ol days - a teller at the bank I use would never give a customer/client money not perfectly organized, but for the last several years, it happens all the time. It is what it is - I just make sure it’s correct in my wallet. So what’s your thoughts on this today…..

I don't recall all bank tellers giving out cash in face up, descending order. Most do, but many don't. At least not all facing up.

Yes, the cash in my wallet is face forward, $1s in front. Guess that's because I worked for a number of years as a cashier.

Back in the 80's when I worked jobs w/cash registers it was mandatory
that all bills would be face up, facing the same way.
I was told it was a security precaution, but I got so used to it that I never stopped w/my personal cash.

I find it interesting that so many depend entirely on digital access.
I read somewhere that in many places throughout Africa you only need
your phone - they don't expect you to use anything else.
It will be a very bad day for citizens like some on this thread,
as well as most of us who depend on paychecks being DD,
as well as the auto pay functions for mortgages & bills,
when the lines will be cut under the Atlantic waters,
towers will not communicate, and even Starlink will stop working.
I believe this WILL happen & I try to be prepared.
