I don't really care how the bills are organized, but I drive my kids crazy by rounding the change to the nearest quarter if not the nearest dollar. Say I owe $9.87, I'll give the cashier $10.12 and get the quarter in change - every time, without even thinking about it.

Just me?

The other "hack" I heard about but haven't used (yet) is you can take a pocketfull of change and dump it in the self-check-out at the grocery store before you put in any bills. It will round for you and give you back the most reasonable combination of coins.

I do have a practical question. I have some UK pounds and Euros - both change and bills left over from a European Vacation earlier this year. Will my local bank change them without a big haircut, or best to just keep them until my next trip overseas? Probably $30 to $40 US.

They generally won't exchange the change, only the bills.

For $30-$40 dollars, I would just keep them for the next trip.
