DH and I are both veterans. We met while serving as security police in the Air Force back in the late 80s. I stayed for 8 years and he retired (then went back to work for the Air Force as a civilian). The photo is us in our mess dresses for a friend's wedding about 34 years ago. As far as family goes, both my brothers served in the Army. DH's father served during WWII. Our BIL was a helicopter door-gunner in Vietnam and his daughter is currently serving as an Air Force interpreter in Morocco. Proud military family!

No one in my immediate family is a veteran, but there are quite a few in my extended family. My grandfathers were both veterans (not by choice) and my uncle and several cousins were/are career military.

My dad says he tried to enlist shortly after he graduated high school (in the late 1950s), but since childhood, he has been deaf in one ear (with multiple surgeries) and has worn very thick eyeglasses. He claims that the military physician who gave him his physical said "with sight/hearing like this, you'd be lucky to even get into the Boy Scouts" and did not clear him to join. By the time Vietnam rolled around, he was slightly too old to be called in the draft.

Marie had/has a number of uncles who served in WWII, Korean War and Cold War times. I have a cousin who served.

My husband served 23 years in the Air Force. We spent a little over half that time overseas. We have good memories of those years.

Both my grandmothers were nurses during WW2, both my grandfathers served -one Navy, the other Army in WW2
2 uncles on my husbands side served in the Navy, 2 of our nephews served in the Army
Our son served in the Army and even though he's out now, he is in a career that could still result in being deployed so-to-speak...and my other nephew is currently serving in the Coast Guard!

My father was a marine during the Vietnam war, my grandfather joined the navy in 1945, my uncle was in the navy in the 80s. My second cousin was the first American airmen casualty in the Vietnam war, there are places on air force bases named after him. He was my great uncles only child. Until my great uncle and aunt died they kept his room exactly as he left it when he went off to war. It was like a time capsule. Sad.

Other. Spouse is a veteran (surprised it wasn't an option...). He was in the Army in Germany in the mid 1970s and then served in the Army National Guard for 30+ years, including a year in Afghanistan imbedded with the Afghan National Police. He retired in 2012 as a LT COL.

My grandfather (Mom's father) served as a cook in the Army during WWII.

I kept looking at what I put, and I kept telling myself that something is missing, something looks like it's missing, and it was driving me crazy. I finally gave up and posted the poll. That is what was missing. I'm sorry about that, I'll blame it on the fact that my puppy was being quite the little devil first thing this morning

I’m retired Army. Husband is retired Navy. Two of our kids are active military. Serving in the US armed forces is a generational legacy in our family.

I have a few great uncles who were veterans. One died when I was very young, and the other didn’t ever talk about his experience, so I don’t know anything besides he was a rear gunner.

My father was in the army during WW II. A few of my uncles were also in the service, they have all passed on. No one else in my family, we are not good at taking orders.

My children did not have to serve because of the service of my father and father in law.
Hopefully my Grandchildren won't have to serve either, the oldest won't be 18 for another 13 years. Two generations not having to serve is great, three not having to serve would be even better.

My grandpa was in WWII, my parents were both in the AF for 20 years, my aunt and uncle were in the AF, One BIL was AF, another was in the marines, two nieces in the AF, one nephew in the Marines. I think that’s it but there’s probably more.

My father was in the Army during WWII and fought in the battles of Leyte and Luzon. My uncle served in Europe. My DH was drafted during Vietnam but was turned down twice and designated 4F.

My DS didn't have to serve; he wanted to but I agree with you on the freedom we now have to serve or not.

My husband is a Coast Guard veteran. My father is a Marine Corps veteran. 2 of my uncles on my dad's side also served in the Marine Corps as well as a couple of my cousins. My father in law is a Navy veteran. And his father (who I knew well) was a Navy veteran as well. Very proud of the military service in my family.

My paternal grandfather (Korea) and my maternal grandmother and grandfather (both WWII) were all veterans. My uncle is a Vietnam vet. My FIL was in the Navy but was honorably discharged after an accident where he got very hurt. My family also can track vets back to the American Revolution and Civil War so lots of veterans.

My sweet daddy just missed the draft for Vietnam and always felt like he should've enlisted but his dad encouraged him not to.

My father served during the Korean War but he stayed in the US the entire time. Both of his older brothers served in Europe during WWII.

A second cousin had a long career in the Navy. Another distant cousin was killed in action in Vietnam. I found his name etched on the wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.

In addition to voting grandparent (my grandfather was in Germany during WWII) and uncle, my DH is retired USAF.
