Inspired by The Wolfman thread...anyone seen Shutter Island? I heard it described as similar to Hitchcock movies. I love suspense, psychological thrills, and a little creepiness but not horror movies. Is it horror? Is is "gross"? What did you think?

I have not but heard from a friend that it is good, nice crisp dialogue. The ending is supposedly disappointing. We are going to see it maybe tonight.

I looooooooooved the book, if that counts for anything.

I couldn't put it down. I also love Scorsese, so I'm hoping I will love this movie.

I think DH and I are going to go tonight! Would be interested to hear others opinions.

I am going to see it tonight! I can't wait. I loved the book so hopefully the movie is just as good.

I saw it last night and thought it was excellent. I was so disappointed when they delayed it. I had been waiting since I read the book in September 2008. Pay attention to little details that will help you when the ending comes to make it all make sense.

I have to say I am a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio so I may be biased but this was acting at its finest. I think it was his best performance to date. Fantastic.

Scott Ruffalo and Michelle Williams also gave great performances.

Definitely a must see!

ETA: It is definitely not gross or horror but it IS creepy. I jumped once in a prison scene but that was it. Not a very scary movie, just suspenseful and creepy right from the beginning.

It was just as good. It stayed pretty much true to the book, which I loved. I hate when movies divert a lot from the book. Scorsese did a good job. :thumbsup2

Would anyone mind PMing me the answer to this? Was it a supernatural phenomen or not?

why did they think the ending was disappointing? ( without giving anything away :))

I am glad to hear it stayed true to the book, the book was excellent, and I didn't see the end coming, the twist.
I can't wait to see the movie :thumbsup2

My husband and I went last night with 8 friends to see the movie and we loved it! My husband had it figured out about 1/2 hour into the movie, but I thought that it was so well done.

It was not gross or horror scary...it was much more psychological. I did, however, jump at a couple of parts.

Go and enjoy!

Trish

I've also been waiting forever for it to finally come out. We saw it today and loved it! We even went to Barnes and Noble afterward to get the soundtrack, which we were happy to discover is a double cd set. We haven't listened to it all yet, but the film has a much more old-fashioned type soundtrack than the pop stuff they throw into so many film soundtracks these days. If you aren't already into John Cage, John Adams, Brian Eno, and other mostly instrumental types of music, you might not care to buy it.

Thanks for the PMs, ladies (not the PMS).
The soundtrack sounds awesome, btw. Now, let's see if I actually see thin in the theater instead of from the Red Box!

We loved it! DH and I figured it out halfway through, but there was still doubt and it was great watching it all unfold.

I don't know much about film styles, but this one was different. It seemed like it was made in the time period because it jerked around a good bit -- didn't flow smoothly from scene to scene or even within scenes. It kind of emphasized the fact that they were all in a mental institution.

Anyway, it was a great movie! Definitely worth seeing in a theater.

I enjoyed it. It was different. I did not read the book and did not know anything about the movie before going in. It's a really good psychological thriller.

Really enjoyed this move:thumbsup2 The first 45 minutes was a bit slow but the last hour made up for it.

Did I hear that the author of the book is the same guy who wrote Mystic River? That movie was great!! I want to see Shutter island. I figure anything with Leo can'[t be bad!

DH and I just got back from seeing it. I thought it was really good. Though I wish I had known a little of the story going in. Being pregnant and seeing this made me sad... Well, it probably would have made me sad regardless, but I'm overly emotional now

And Leonardo DiCaprio can do no wrong in my book :lovestruc

It is by the same author of Mystic River. Dennis Lehane. Gonna wait til Netflix...dont like watching potentially scary movies in the theater. I know, I am odd.

You aren't so odd :). I am that way about sad movies. I refuse to watch tearjerkers, especially in the theater.
