I'm a coward and I admit it! With that said, I ride everything at Disneyland. Love Big Thunder - tend to finish and say to my DS14 "Want to do it again?" Love Splash Mountain (last time I even opened my eyes at the top of the drop and almost enjoyed the view). Once on Space Mountain is enough for me. I wouldn't go on California Screamin' at DCL. I went on the mouse there - Mulholland Madness I think - and didn't really like it.

Don't ride at a lot of other places - I like some atmosphere with my adrenaline. I think my real problem is heights - won't go on a balcony in a high floor hotel room, live in fear of my car dying on a bridge, etc. My kids got me to take them to the outside observation deck at the Empire State Building - I stayed near the wall most of the time, finally edged over to the rail and almost fainted. If Space Mountain were in the light I'd probably never get on it. I think being up high with nothing around is my issue with California Screamin' - that and being upside down! You get the picture.

Last time we were at MGM (6 years ago) I was an even bigger coward and I sent my kids (then 8 and 11) on ToT without me. I'm thinking I should try it this time. Any chickens (or brave souls) have any advice? I figure Rock'n Roller Coaster is out of the question.

I think you should try TOT and RR at least once. What I told the kids whom we travelled with in september is..."Disney would never do anything to hurt you." THe 6 year old went on TOT, and although he didn't like it, at least he could brag to his friends back at school that he went on it once! You HAVE to try it, hey you never know you may just like them. A good solution to the scaredies, SCREAM like MAD!!!

I too am a chicken, if I could lay an egg, I would. However, I do like thrill rides. i try to resist on getting on the rides, but when I get on them, the adrenaline takes the place of nervousness. Then, the first drop on a rollercoaster, I scream my head off. I am talking blood curdling, scream. Then I get on it again, still not liking the heights, and the fact that I have I no control of the situation, and I still close my eyes, but this time, I laugh my head off. You know all the times, something happens and you wish you could scream, and you can't? I scream on a scary ride, and just let it all go and I have a great time. I haven't been on TOT, I will be going on it in November, but I intend to scream my head off. It is the only time you can scream and people wont think you have lost your mind. Be scared, scream, get adrenalized. Enjoy yourself, you are on vacation.

I can relate to not liking heights. I can't do roller coasters. No RRC for me. However, I did do the ToT on our last trip 2 yrs. ago. As a matter of fact, I did it twice. The 2nd time I remember saying "what am I doing". My 5 yr old DD was also saying "I don't think I want to do this again". But we did it.

You are in an elevator car - not hanging out on the edge of the building. It's easier to deal with - I just closed my eyes and before Iknew it , it was over.

I keep saying that for this trip in June, that I may not be able to go on it. However, the closer it gets, the more I keep thinking that I'll probably be able to do it. It's a ride with a big drop - that's all I keep telling myself. It's not going to be so bad.

Good luck with your decision.

Give it a try. I'm not a thrill ride person, but I make it a point to try RNR at least twice a visit, (I can handle that one OK), and TOT once. The drops only last a few seconds and if you need to, close your eyes. You'll have the memory forever. Have fun!!!

I do all the mountains and RNR. But there is no way I can talk myself into doing ToT. I get queasy in the elevator at the doctors' office. I don't think I would feel very good afterwards.

I think you should do it. Whats the worst that can happen??? So you dont like big deal dont go again... If you dont do it i think you will be missing out on a good ride. You never know maybe you will love it and get right back in line....

disney91 -
You made me laugh out loud! By the way, I'm leaving in 33 days too - maybe we should meet at ToT and egg each other on.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I did TOT last week for the first time. I was always to afraid to try it before. DS is always begging (he's 10 and I won't send him on alone and forget dh getting on that ride). Finally I decided as we walked throught the gates I was going to do it. We went right to it. Good thing it was walk on because I probably wouldn't of made it through the wait. My heart was pounding so fast I thought I was going to have a heart attack once we actually started dropping.
All that said, I didn't like it one bit. It was alittle to abrupt for my taste. I am proud to be able to say I did it, but I don't think I'll do it again.

I am exactly like you! Maybe it's because I'm also from Oregon, but I am deathly afraid of heights too, and will only ride Disney rides. Forget Magic Mountain! I couldn't even consider riding T of T, but I want you to know that RnR is not bad at all!!!! It is in the dark, like Space Mountain, and heighth is not a factor. I truly enjoyed it. It takes off really fast, but that is the worst part. I would definitely recommend it to anyone afraid of heights.

P.S. I also felt sick at the Empire State Building!

Disnee Dad Says.............................Don't tell anyone, but I am afraid of heights. When I was on the space needle in seattle I could feel it move! Engineers will tell you tall buildings do move a little. Ride ToT, heights do not affect you as you never get the chance to look down. For one second you get to look at MGM that is like a mile away. The drops are inside the elevator so you don't know if you are high or not. RnRC, the first 3.9 seconds pulls you into a loop at 60 mph or so, but it is in the dark, and the ride is smooth so you get no feelings of height, only speed.
I'd much rather ride these rides than be on a balcony of some 20 story hotel and looking down!

I think you should try it........ so much fun. TOT is great. RNR is a must do as well - I am very afraid of heights but you have no sensation of height on RNR, since it is an indoor rollercoaster. You will have a blast. Just one word of advice, do not do RNR and TOT back to back(I know it may be tempting since they are close to one another).........talk about queezy!

PS the actual ride does not last very long anyway, its over before you know it (under 2 min I think!)

I was a little ambivalent before my first ToT experience. It had only been about 45-60 minutes after lunch, and I was just about convinced that I'd soon be SEEING my lunch again. :D

As it turned out, ToT was an absolute BLAST, and I never felt a moment of nausea. It was frightening/thrilling as all heck, but there was no discomfort involved.

I'm not a very big thrill ride fan. We live about an hour away from Cedar Point, which has more roller coasters than you can shake a stick at. I've probably been there once in the past 6-8 years.

But ToT and RnR were two of the best memories from our last trip.

If you are afraid of heights I'd say don't do it. However, if you do it, you can always keep your eyes closed and then it doesn't seem half as bad - at least to me! I peeked out once or twice but kept mine shut most of the time. It is a fun ride but could just be terrifying to those afraid of falling off of tall buildings.

Enjoy!

I thought Splash Mountain was more frightening than ToT by far. It's easy, no worries, simple.

Plus the best part of the ride is all the cool motion and special effects you go through before the drop, the drop is an afterthought.

I have never cared much for rides that you ride up high in the air and just drop but hearing so many good things about ToT I had to try it. Once I rode it I was hooked. I love it. The drop down is really smooth and going up and down is a blast. The first time I rode it I saw my camera floating around in the air (the strap was around my neck but I forgot secure the camera part). Its my favorite Disney attraction.

Go, ride it and have a blast!!

If you decide to do it, do it right away so you don't have to worry about it all day! In my opinion, if you can handle some of the other rides you said you've been on, you'll be fine.

Also, the ride before the drop is excellent! Really well done!

Karen,
You should definately try TOT! My mother (62) did it w/my 2 kids (12 & 10) and I said theres no way that I'm going to be the only one not doing this. I loved it!! I'm definately not a "drop" ride kind of girl. I thought that the elevator drops 13 stories straight down, BUT IT DOES'NT! It drops maybe 4 or 5 floors and just when your about to get that guesy feeling in the pit of your stomach, the elevator goes up again. This is what saved me!! I hate that feeling in my stomach. I hate splash mountain. So if you can do splash mountain, then you can definately do TOT! (you should really do RNR coaster too!:D
