No prom for me.

I did just learned that they bus the kids to the location now. As the location is 15 minutes out of town. I remember prom being in the gym.

Proms aren't quite the same in the UK as they are in the States, or they weren't when I was at school. The only proper prom we had was in the final year of high school (when you're 16), it was the only one we could go to, the whole prom date thing didnt happen either and it was held in some external venue away from the school. I went to mine in 2003.

I went to prom in 1973 and 1974 with previous boyfriends. Then in 1975 I went to my high school prom and my boyfriend’s prom, which were on the same night. That boyfriend is my husband, of 50 years this September❤️

We don't have proms in our province. The only formal dinner/dance is the graduation dinner/dance held in June the same week as commencement. And it's called grad not prom.

There may be a grad of some kind for middle school with a dinner but that varies between schools.

There was nothing like a prom at my school so there really wasn't a decision to be made. I did not attend any sort of prom myself.

Boyfriend and I went to different schools so I went to his and my senior proms. His was late April, mine later May. Same dress each time - hot pink number. 1996. Married him 4 years later - hitting 25 years this year

Two ~ Jr & Sr Year
Both with BF now DH
Mom made both my dresses
One we ate at a cool place before ~ The Abbey in a real cathedral
Second we had food at prom
They were okay ~ in hindsight I'd not go again
Funny how so many things in HS that seem important, just aren't
The money that is spent now for a HS dance is just absurd

I went to three proms in the 80s. The first one was as a favor to a friend-I went with a boy she was friends with to his senior prom. Met him a few times before the prom, went with him to the prom, never saw him again after it was over. Then I went to my junior prom stag with a bunch of friends who also didn't have dates, boys and girls. That was probably the most fun I had at a prom. I went to my senior prom with a guy I ended up dating for a couple of years afterward. I always found proms pretty boring.

I did go to a few football games, but my High School experience pretty much began at 8 am and ended at 3 pm Monday thru Friday. I really have no memory of even hearing about Prom, let alone going. My group of friends were the same. University was different. I joined a Fraternity, So my social life really stepped up from my Sophomore year on. (My University did not allow Freshman to join or live in Fraternity houses). Our dances and parties were famous. As the only off campus Fraternity, we did not have as many restrictions as on campus Fraternities.

I went in 1986.

I was so looking forward to it. It was at a fancy hotel downtown. The dinner lasted so long, there wasn’t much time for dancing. I felt like we were at someone’s wedding reception. We ended up leaving early.
Our prom was at a wedding banquet hall, they is always a “cocktail” hour and multi course plated dinners. Our class of 1985 signed a contract with the venue that was do long that our two oldest had it at the same venue (#2 was the last class). DH and I were both there, but not together, we got married 10 years later. No junior prom back then.

No prom for me.

Ours are always out of town, very few drive, limos and party buses. Nothing has changed in 40 years.

Prom here is in June. I didn’t go to mine. Wasn’t dating anyone at the time, and it was only for couples. My closest friends and I, all single, went to a bar instead for our own celebration. No regrets.

Interesting how many of you married your high school sweetheart. :lovestruc

And P.S. Is it “the prom” or just “prom”?
I’m around your age, and back in the day, where I’m from, it was always referred to as The Prom. Nowadays, I mostly hear just “prom”.

Where I live prom isn't until mid/later June...

I didn't go to prom.
Didn't have many friends or a boyfriend.
I could have gone to my best friend's prom because I hung out with her and her friends all the time and I probably should have but I didn't.

No, I didn't go to my proms. My parents were very conservative and strict and it was established years before I was a junior or senior that I would not be going. I was involved at school (helped make decorations and even suggested the theme our senior year), but didn't go.

Years later, after becoming a teacher, I sponsored a high school class and helped them plan the best prom ever. :) I also chaperoned lots of homecoming dances and proms, so I've made up for missing my own several times over. Our children attended their proms/dances, even if they only went with friends. They loved the school after-prom parties more due to the great prizes that were up for door prizes.

I was running errands last weekend and saw lots of kids on front lawns taking prom photos. It made me smile to see them all!

I went to all the proms.

My freshman year I went to the junior prom
My sophomore year I went to the senior prom.
My junior year I went to the junior and senior prom
My senior year I went to my senior prom and my bf went to another school and I went to his prom.

They were all fun!

I actually went to 2 proms although I have no memory of the first. My parents married young, my mom was a Sr. in high school. They went to her prom and since she was expecting me my dad always said I went to her prom.

I did go to my Sr. prom. When my date asked me I told him I had to think about it. Ironically my husband was sitting with a group of his friends in the lunchroom where I was asked and made fun of my date. I did go to the prom with the guy and we did date off and on for a couple of years. Then I met my husband and found out he was with the group that teased my date. I despised the dress my mom made me get, it was an ugly shade of green, it was too long and I almost fell down the steps at the hotel the prom was held at more than once. I didn't see my date that much as he hung out with his friends.

My grandson has his Jr. Prom tonight. I cannot wait to see how handsome he looks as I will be there for pictures. His girlfriend bought her own flowers as she is very particular about what she wants. My daughter made a candy bouquet for him to give her instead.

I went to both my Junior and Senior Prom. The Junior year one was just in the school cafeteria, but the Senior year it was outside of the building. Both were dressy affairs though.

Senior year we also had a graduation ball. That was held in the school gym, with a theme decided and decorated by the parents. They still do that today, but it is much more informal now, not dressy, and kids attend in groups rather than with a “date” who asked them to attend. They hang out, participate in activities/games, and have food stations to visit instead of being served a formal dinner.

I went to my senior prom but did not go to my junior prom. I really didn't have a lot of interest but my mother was pushing me to go (a "milestone" and "you'll regret it if you don't," she said). And then a boy in my math class invited me, so I went. It was... fine... but if I had ever regretted not going, I think it would have been over some sort of vision of what prom should be rather than what it actually is.

My mom ended up making my dress for me because I couldn't find anything I liked. (It was 1990 and pastels were the "in" colors... and I wanted a bright color.). I ended up standing out more than I anticipated being the lone girl in a red dress in a sea of pastels. (I am not generally one to call attention to myself.)

My son was not interested in going to any school dances so he did not go to either of his proms. My daughter's junior prom was canceled due to COVID. She did go to her senior prom and had a really nice time.

Oh, I should have added that proms were held in February, the graduation ball was the June event.
