Shocked and disgusted!

Teenager being a teenager. Surely not something that anyone should do, but at the same time doesn't sound like anything too major to me either. So many worse things that teenagers are doing out there.

I truly dislike this type of response. Just because he wasn't smoking crack doesn't mean it wasn't major. He could have been severely injured. That's major!

'Teens will be teens'/'We're just young and having fun' is the excuse that my dorm neighbors use to smoke weed, snort cocaine, and blast music at 3 in the morning on many occasions.

Unfortunately, the RAs use the same excuse to not do anything about it.

So, yes, it CAN lead to worse behavior in the long run.

I have never been on a ride where anything like that happened, but as a former teacher, I would have had to bite my tongue very hard had I been there. The most annoying thing I have had happen was last summer on TGMR - the person directly in front of me was filming the entire ride with her ipad and completely blocked my line of vision. The guy behind me "hinted" several times for her to please lower it, but she never moved that thing till the ride was over.

The same thing happened to us on IASW last year. The woman in front of us used her ipad to film it. It was so distracting & it blocked my view too.

That's a pretty big jump in criminal activity right there. Nobody claimed to have seen this child doing anything illegal like drugs. Are you trying to say that the druggies in your building started their criminal career out by not following the rules at Disneyworld and it exploded from there, or vice versa?

Of course you aren't. Lets stick with comparing apples to apples here. Obviously "kids will be kids" has a sliding scale....I'm going to guess that most pp's here would place the IASW incident at a different point on the scale than illicit drug use.

Not sure if anyone here is aware, but there was/is a huge problem with it's all over the parks. Look in YouTube, "tower of terror without seatbelt" a bunch if kids took their seat belts off and road the drops. Because of it, Disney changed the ride mechanics so the "elevators" no longer move if the seatbelt is not engaged. People do stupid things all the time.

As far as "teenagers being teenagers" that's a load of horse poop. My daughter knows if she ever acts in a disrespectful manor her consequences would be far reaching. Teenagers are not bad, parents who let their kids get away with everything is the real problem.

Not surprising. Teenagers really are stupid though. Kidding. Not stupid, but their frontal lobes aren't fully developed yet. The part of your brain that says, "Is this a good idea?" And boys' brains take longer than girls' brains to fully develop in this way, up to their early 20s

This is true. I recall learning this in one of my pediatric development classes in nursing school.

I'm sorry to hear people having bad experiences with the groups. Haven't personally had that problem this week. Kids will kids, but chaperones need to do their job too.

I work with teens on a daily basis. Most are intelligent and good-hearted. Some however cannot make the "if I do this a,b or c may happen" connection. Example - April fools joke one 16 year old decided to drizzle baby oil down the main stairs. A PREGNANT supply teacher slipped and fell all the way to the bottom. Good kid, not malicious, just unable to forsee all the possible consequences. As PP have mentioned their brains are not fully developed...

Did anyone bother to read the apology the mom of the teenager wrote on this thread?

That is incredibly big of her to do that.....

Yes, a teen isn't capable of making a decision to do something stupid just to do something stupid. It had to be because his/her parents let them get away with everything.
You don't have teens I'm guessing.

I wanted to come to this thread and formerly apologize on behalf of my son. He in fact did jump out of the boat on IASW on this very class trip. I am surprised that a member of this message board saw this unfortunate incident. I know I feel better now.

Your son is lucky to be alive. He could have been crushed by the boat. I hope you are able to get that across to him. Was he ever caught by security and did he give a reason for why he jumped out?

The disgusting part would be touching that water :crazy2:
The kid is lucky he didn't hurt himself. Hopefully security got a hold of him and dealt with him accordingly.

I guess my wording was a little off. All I'm saying is that those phrases are complete BS, and that's coming from a late teen myself. I really don't care if anyone's frontal lobe isn't developed. You can't use age to excuse pure idiocy.

Speaking of a big jump? Way to take that posters words out of context.

We had something similar happen on Pirates of the Caribbean a couple years ago; a pre-teen on a school trip thought it would be funny to jump off the boat onto the side of the ride and swing from a fake tree. He physically got out of the boat another 4 or 5 times and nobody said anything over the intercom. We said something after we got off the ride but nothing was ever done and we saw him getting on Indiana Jones right after.

There's an IJ ride? where?

I hope someone got a hold of that kid and was able to explain to him exactly WHY that was a such a stupid thing to do. I'm sure from a teenager's perspective, it's just a silly, harmless little thing to do. If questioned, they'd probably ask "What's the big deal?"

I bet he didn't even fathom that there might be mechanical equipment in the water that could tangle him up and cause him to be hit by a ride vehicle or something. Or, if it had been a ride like PoC, where some of the water is actually over 10 feet deep, there could have been a much different outcome.

I pretty much guarantee that he didn't think there was even the slightest chance he could actually DIE doing what he did. And if no one caught him and explained it to him, then he's still not going to understand what the big deal is.
