Shocked and disgusted!

If that were true there would be ALOT of dead people because I would bet for every car (or boat if you want to call it that) there is at least 1 person who puts their hand in the water.

True enough. :) just thinking about that though gives me the skivvies. Lol

Until someone gets seriously hurt! Sorry, by this age, they should know better. This was dangerous, not a silly kid thing! A few years back, we had a group of teens driving and thought it would be funny to toss a frozen turkey from a car window. It was so funny that a poor lady ended up with a fractured face and needed multiple surgeries.

OP here - totally agree. My sister and I are 24 and 26, so not THAT far removed from our teenage years. We both went on our senior trips there and I don't know anyone who would do something so stupid and dangerous.

Seems like a lot of bands and cheer groups.

Most of cheer is out of season right now...sure its not end of the season dance cometitions?

Gross, yes, but really not the end of the world as we know it. Its probably some decently-raised kid who is on their first trip away from parents and was dared by a classmate to jump in. I hardly think he's setting himself up for a lifetime of serious crime.

My oldest's 8th grade class just came back from Washington DC, and he told us a story of a kid being dared to do a snow angel on the grass in Arlington Cemetary. Appropriate? No. Offensive to someone who might have been visiting a loved one? Without a doubt. Could have gotten in trouble from school if caught? Sure. But malicious and devient? Not really.

The big concern with IASW is the safety issue. Apparently the kid is just fine...stupid, but hardly a hardened criminal

Teenager being a teenager. Surely not something that anyone should do, but at the same time doesn't sound like anything too major to me either.

No, it sounds like how particularly gruesome episodes of CSI start.

we are leaving in a few days..is there something happening at disney right now for all of these school groups to be there?

There is a cheerleading championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports this weekend according to their website. Varsity Cheer Finals May 3&4

Ahhh, that makes sense...we are still in the youth arena. Their seasons end in Dec. I forgot about teens/high school

We had something similar happen on Pirates of the Caribbean a couple years ago; a pre-teen on a school trip thought it would be funny to jump off the boat onto the side of the ride and swing from a fake tree. He physically got out of the boat another 4 or 5 times and nobody said anything over the intercom. We said something after we got off the ride but nothing was ever done and we saw him getting on Indiana Jones right after.

Something like jumping into the water on IASW/jumping onto the side of the ride NEVER would've occurred to me at that age. Must be some combination of a sense of entitlement and lack of supervision. Ugh.

I personally do not like the excuse that kids will be kids. When I was a teenager, I never did anything like that (but my parents were strict on respect and being polite). I feel you just give kids that excuse to behave that way, instead of teaching them respect, and that their actions do have consequences. Just the personal opinion of an elementary school teacher.

I had a similar experience my husband and I were at Magic Kingdom riding the people mover, and we got put in a chain of cars with at least 8 high school looking kids. They were spitting on the walls, jumping cars, standing up, flipping people off, cursing, etc. Those kids decided to stay on, and my husband and I were so peeved, we went to the CM at the end of the escalators to inform them of their behavior. The CM called security, and told the other CM's to be on the look out.

Did the ride stop when he jumped off? We had lunch with an imagineer who told us that a lot of the rides have that "safety" feature that if someone gets off or drops something the ride stops. Sounds like it didn't.
But what we were also told is that all the rides have cameras that track the whole everything and so most likely he was caught because he is on the cameras for that ride. I'm sure if the ride wasn't monitored that very moment they probably can go back and he will be found.

Personally I think school groups assign chaperones but what happens is the kids are then told to go have fun and meet up later. At least that happened when I was with a group when my kids were younger and what always seemed to happen was there was that one kid who was left alone as the other kids just took off. And in this case the goofying off happened.

Hope the rest of the trip goes well for you.

When my daughter went on her senior class trip the chaperones only checked on them for bed check. She was allowed to come and go to the parks when she felt like it. I just asked her and she said other than bed check the only time she saw a chaperone was they were standing in line for HM

I wanted to come to this thread and formerly apologize on behalf of my son. He in fact did jump out of the boat on IASW on this very class trip. I am surprised that a member of this message board saw this unfortunate incident. I know I feel better now.

Seriously? Did he say why? Having a teenager myself, his answer might help me and others understand the psyche.

As a former Cedar Fair Ride Operator this sort of behavior drives me sooooo crazy. Like, nothing bothers more more than people who can't follow or decide they're too cool to follow the rules. They are literally there to keep you safe. They aren't there to keep you from having fun, they're there to keep you safe. UGH. Why can't people understand that? Any amusement/theme park rules are not to keep you from having fun, they want you to have fun, they don't want you to get injured.

And the excuse that he's a dumb teenager? No, it doesn't cut it. Yes, he's dumb, but plenty of other teens can and do go without doing anything wrong.

I would have thrown that kid out faster than you could say Mickey Mouse. I hope security got him and ejected him from the park.

Ha. Kids will be kids. He could be doing drugs or stealing but no, his ultimate thrill is dipping in the IASW water. His trip will be memorable for sure. And the most memorable part about your trip was him so he created memories for you too!

I wouldn't do that, cuz there is a chance there could be some mechanical part that could catch a foot or piece of clothing, or worse -- getting booted from the park you've paid $1000 a day to be at is silly. Reward doesn't justify the potential cost. But to a teen on a day pass it's probly no biggie.

As you have young kids, I'm sure they will love how understanding you will be when they do "dumb", really dangerous things as teenagers!

Yes it does! LOL Well in most cases at least. Sure there are some good ones out there. But that doesn't mean there shouldn't be consequences. There should always be consequences, that's how they learn.

But I wouldn't be "shocked" and "disgusted". I do think that's a little over the top. I would probably roll my eyes, and think, "dumb teenagers, I hope they get kicked out".

I agree, I don't find it disgusting, I find it overwhelmingly stupid, and the mere fact that you don't here about this happening a million times a day just goes to show that the average teenager is not a total moron when it comes to personal safety as long as they are sober.

Totally agree. And I bet if that kid had gotten hurt or worse, died, then there would be a giant lawsuit by the parents to sue Disney because their "good boy" who was "just being a typical teenager" wasn't properly protected with safety measures!

And I'm saying all this as the mom of an almost 18 year old boy whose pre-frontal lobe is not fully developed yet due to age. Of course he does dumb things all the time, but certainly not things like jump out of an amusement park ride... good grief!

I wouldn't be shocked or disgusted, but I'd definitely be annoyed. I've been on boats that were stopped because someone stood up and can't fathom a CM not saying anything when someone jumped into the water.

We spent the first day of our trip today at Epcot/MK, and we had a fantastic first day even in the pouring rain! We rode it's a small world around 7pm this evening, and in one of the rooms we heard a large splash and turned around - a high school (I assume) student had taken off his shirt and JUMPED IN to the water!!! He quickly jumped back in his boat and his classmates were not laughing - they looked really peeved. He put his shirt and poncho back on quickly and when we got off, quickly ran off the ride. I told the CM when we disembarked, and he radio'd to a coworker, but no idea if the boy was caught as he was gone when I turned around. I know we were all young and stupid once, but today we experienced SO many middle/high school students being incredibly rude, ignoring CMs/disobeying rules and being super rowdy. I think they need more chaperones!

There are two types of magic at Disney: pixie dust, and Malificent's dark sorcery.
Didn't you ever wonder how they add new dolls into the ride? That water is enchanted.

Sleep well teenager...sleep well....
Your small world is about to get even smaller.

I would be shocked and disgusted that someone would wilingly go into that water
I'm in the camp of its a teen being a teen, and that doesn't excuse the behavior it just explains it. Sometimes some of them do stupid things, luckily he wasn't hurt or worse and hopefully he was found and asked to leave. I doubt he'll learn any lesson though and he'll probably do something stupid again at some other point in his teen years.
