We spent the first day of our trip today at Epcot/MK, and we had a fantastic first day even in the pouring rain!

We rode it's a small world around 7pm this evening, and in one of the rooms we heard a large splash and turned around - a high school (I assume) student had taken off his shirt and JUMPED IN to the water!!! He quickly jumped back in his boat and his classmates were not laughing - they looked really peeved.

He put his shirt and poncho back on quickly and when we got off, quickly ran off the ride. I told the CM when we disembarked, and he radio'd to a coworker, but no idea if the boy was caught as he was gone when I turned around.

I know we were all young and stupid once, but today we experienced SO many middle/high school students being incredibly rude, ignoring CMs/disobeying rules and being super rowdy. I think they need more chaperones!

I didn't act horribly intelligent when I was a teenager, but I never did anything dangerous on purpose... I know it's a slow moving ride, and all, but it's still a machine with moving parts, and electricity near water.

I'm shocked the ride wasn't stopped. Don't they watch the guests on camera?

We thought the same thing! It was very quick so maybe they just didn't see?

Did the ride stop when he jumped off? We had lunch with an imagineer who told us that a lot of the rides have that "safety" feature that if someone gets off or drops something the ride stops. Sounds like it didn't.
But what we were also told is that all the rides have cameras that track the whole everything and so most likely he was caught because he is on the cameras for that ride. I'm sure if the ride wasn't monitored that very moment they probably can go back and he will be found.

Personally I think school groups assign chaperones but what happens is the kids are then told to go have fun and meet up later. At least that happened when I was with a group when my kids were younger and what always seemed to happen was there was that one kid who was left alone as the other kids just took off. And in this case the goofying off happened.

Hope the rest of the trip goes well for you.

~LOL. This reminds me of my first day of orientation -- there's always has to be one! :lmao: And, I agree that he either needs to be chaperoned or he could have just dropped his cell phone or something.

Kids will be kids. The disgusting thing about it is...actually touching that filthy water!

kid mightve been trying to drown himself, hearing its a small world for that long can have that effect on people

Teenager being a teenager. Surely not something that anyone should do, but at the same time doesn't sound like anything too major to me either. So many worse things that teenagers are doing out there.

So disgusting...I went to WDW twice with my marching band in high school, once as a freshman and once as a senior (2006 and 2009) and I can't imagine anyone in either group behaving that way. We didn't have chaperones follow us around the parks or on rides and we were perfectly capable of following the rules. I'd rather follow the rules and have a good time in the park but I guess some kids don't feel that way? :confused3

I have never been on a ride where anything like that happened, but as a former teacher, I would have had to bite my tongue very hard had I been there. The most annoying thing I have had happen was last summer on TGMR - the person directly in front of me was filming the entire ride with her ipad and completely blocked my line of vision. The guy behind me "hinted" several times for her to please lower it, but she never moved that thing till the ride was over.

I was at MK today as well since rope drop & HS yesterday with the hoards of cheerleader/dance troops & the marching band kids - they were all the sweetest around me - a little loud sometimes when they would break into cheers in the lines, not realizing some guests aren't in the mood, but I didn't see anything like that.

I'm not disagreeing with your reaction to the incident you saw. If I saw that I would have said something too, but I think bad behavior is few and far between. They're large groups of young people - not generally stereotyped as a collected group of maturity. Hope they caught the kid because someone wasn't taught manners at home & [ insert joke about mouse security & answering to the big cheese ]

But I didn't see any of the groups misbehaving. Maybe you got unlucky - I usually get the [bad word here describing a person] who use flash photography on dark rides. The pics look horrible & you piss everyone off.

I don't agree with this philosophy. Being a teenager doesn't automatically mean being stupid and ignoring safety rules. If my teens did that, I hope they would be kicked out of the park. They would face much stiffer punishment at home.

We were at Disneyland on a grad night last year. We were in line for Pirates and saw a kid standing up in a boat and yelling at his friend who were in line. As soon as the boat docked, he and several other kids were met by security and pulled aside. When we boarded, a few grad night kids were in the row behind us. A CM came over and told them those kids were seen standing up and messing around inside the ride. She said they were being ejected from the park and would not be attending the grad party later that night. She reminded the kids on our boat to have fun, but to keep their heads about them and stay safe. The kids all nodded, and were great during the ride. Disney doesn't mess around with safety.

It is potentially very dangerous, and possibly lethal. There may be more than just a trough of water in those canals in IASW. One could get snagged in a mechanism and struck by a ride vehicle weighing thousands of pounds. It would not end well.

I believe that's how there was a fatality on Splash.

Yes... we were on Tower of Terror and one of the school group kids in the front row was putting his feet up on the edge in front of him. CM was not happy when the elevator opened, and I don't blame her! The whole group was loud, rowdy, and annoying.

We also had a chaperone telling her group of 89(!!!!!!!!!) to all stop and get together on the exit walkway of TSMM. I was the first behind the first few of them and said "excuse me" to get through because there was LOTS of people behind me not in the tour group trying to exit the ride. The chaperone was very rude to me even though I was polite.

Yeah... hating the school groups.

Oh my gosh just thinking of that gross water engulfing someone's body :crazy2: People are nuts. That boy could have been seriously hurt. I hope he was caught.

I've done a lot of things, but I've never been so stupid as to purposely put myself in harm's way. That isn't being a teenager, that's just being plain stupid.
