Sarah, welcome back, may the new year be less stressful.

Flights, I haven't flown from YYZ (Toronto) since 2000. Too many taxes, too many restrictions and the prices are crazy to/from MCO. I have flights from BUF to JFK and MCO to BUF booked, right now. Aer Lingus has been my preferred airline for searching, so I will keep patient and wait out a price drop.

Pj

Thanks PJ.

Its strange seeing the differences in prices that you find by just changing to a different airport!

Hey everyone! Haven't been on in awhile!!! Sorry...

Sarah- sorry about your grandad....hope 2010 is a wonderful year for you and your family!

As for flights, we are still looking as well. There are 5 of us, so we really need to cut corners. We dont plan to fly out too much in advance, just a day or two as DH cant get off work too many extra days. I am concerned flying with two kids so young, so any tips or airline suggestions would be great!

Hope everyone had a great holiday and is enjoying 2010 so far!:goodvibes

Thanks Kamy.

Great tip for kids, try to get them tired before they get on the plane. Usually this means theyll sleep for some of the journey. Also take a few activity books for them to do on the plane as this will keep them occupied and don't take up much room.

Hi there, we have 2 girls, aged 7 and 8, they have travelled alot since they were 3 and 4. The biggest tip i have is to order a children's meal on the plane, it comes out first, before everyone else's meals. Then you can get them fed, remove thier tray and get them organised with a movie or colouring-in and eat your meal in peace. Also, make sure you have a drink or sweets to suck on landing. Good Luck!

Oh yes definately kids meals! If theyd let me order one on Virgin I would! Jam sandwiches and cheddars for snacky meal instead of that awful mayonnaisey sandwich the adults have!

I always hate the airline food and generally Tony will eat mine .....I just have the cheese and crackers and the dessert. I prefer Easyjet as we can buy a decent sandwich in the airport and take it on the plane with us.

Thanks everyone! THey have flown before, but not longer than 2.5hrs, so this will be a stretch! LOL!
They love to color and we have a movie player, so hope that helps. And sleep will be great, so we will make sure to get them good and tired. I didnt know you could order kids meals...wow!
We are looking for some good sites to check for flights, we have checked flycheapabroad.com but does anyone know any others???
Thanks!

www.skyscanner.com is one you could try.

Alot of the transatlantic flights will have seat back movies (or I think most of them do now?)

Hello Everyone,

I've been away from the boards for a few months, busy time with work and holidays. I'll try to catch up, but I bet I won't make it through everything I've missed.

Starting to get really excited now that we can say the cruise is this year!

I know this has probably been discussed ad nauseum, but does anyone have recommendations on

1) Decent hotel in Barcelona, near the action, not too expensive (I've liked what I have seen on hotel Praktika Rambla' s website)

2) Flights out of the US midwest (we live in WI, but could drive to IL or MN). Not sure which airports or airlines I should even be looking at for best prices.

I also noticed the transatlantic pirates website has changed! I got us signed up for roll call, but don't see the secret mickey or fish extender links anymore. Is that still happening? We've never done that before and were excited to participate.

Looking foward to more active planning, and will try to stay on more this year :)

The website is just now getting back up and running.:surfweb: Those missing things will be added soon. :thumbsup2

After thinking about it for a day or so, decided just to do it! (Sounds like a commercial!)

DCL was going to charge us $1014 pp for airfare and we did it for $773!

Lufthansa is a Star Alliance which means that my DH can get his CO FF miles which makes him happy-- it takes so little :rotfl:

I get to go to Germany-- for three hours-- which makes ME happy. :rotfl:

And I don't have to think about it anymore-- which makes both of us happy!

We booked our airfare through tripadvisor.com. We paid $632 (including fees and taxes) for ATL-BCN non-stop, booking on AirFrance, which is actually a Delta codeshare (Delta wanted $2500 per person).

We could have saved some with a 1-stop, but this way allowed us to keep the kids in school on Wednesday, but still have a full day in Barcelona on Thursday, as we arrive at 9:00. By booking this early we were also able to get an aisle and window, with another aisle and window directly behind. Even if the price goes down, I'll be happy with the fact that this part of the trip has been nailed down over 9 months prior to the flight.

Just for fun, I just looked at ORD-BCN, and found 1-way fares as low as $472 (incl fees and taxes).

Welcome back!

If you want to get to BCN first thing in the morning, you have to connect from your home airport to one of the non-stop hubs in the US: Philly (US Airways), Newark (Continental), JFK (Delta or American), or Atlanta (Delta). You can also fly N/S to BCN from Toronto or Montreal (Air Canada).

If you don't mind get into BCN a little later, then find a cheap flight overseas with a connection to BCN. Not sure what major airports are in the area, but Chicago might have a good possibility of getting decent flights.

Lufthansa has a $653 one way fare from Chicago to BCN connecting thru Germany on another Lufthansa flight so you don't have to worry about additional baggages fees on the European connection.

That is a good price fare for Houston. We don't have the competition for fares that are in the NE. Not sure what fares are usually like in Chicago.

I know that Air Lingus flies out of Chicago.

Good luck in your search!

I'm with you. I'm glad that I'm done! I probably could have waited and done it cheaper, but I beat DCL's price so it's all good.

I would have paid extra if we could have gotten a N/S. It is so much easier on everyone.

Congratulations!

I'm not sure how long your flight is, but we will be taking 3 flights and be on the plane or in an airport for about 32 hours to get to Barcelona! So, I need to be super organised with the kids.
We fly Qantas from Australia and they have movies on demand, including Disney channel. Most long flights do now, so check whether you'll need to take your DVD player.
We will be eating a few meals on board so ordering ahead is great, Also ask them to remove the kids tray when they bring your meal. Check with the airline what meals they will be serving on your flight, If they don't have kids options, you can be sneaky and order a diabetic or allergy meal (any pre-ordered meal comes out first).
Colouring activities are great, but I find a small etch-a-sketch or Nintendo DS better. Only because I don't particularly enjoy crawling around on the floor searching for lost pencils!
Again, not sure how long your flight is, but I take a small pillow (or soft toy) for the girls, the ones on the plane are pretty pathetic! It makes it a little more comfy to sleep.
One last thing, Socks, Their little feet get really cold!

I always take sannys, last time for instance,( I have been vegi for more than 20 years) AA had no meal for me, no nothing, all the way from las vegas, this is typical, she offered to scrape the meat from the potatoes so I could eat them, I was not happy, come on,is it that difficult? Ofcourse I thought they would have had some food for me(I ordered it both ways and got it going out) I will never make that mistake again(although Ive probably said that before!)

We have booked the Praktik Rambla ... it looks really nice and in a great location for sight-seeing.

I agree its getting exciting now when you think it is this year.

Off work today as snow is quite bad here and didn't want to risk walking down our hill in the snow lol. Dan walked to work bless him!
