Self-serve returning to Cabanas

A simple Google search turns up plenty of references discussing how immune response to a given pathogen can and does wane over time.
This is correct. So yes, either hadn't ever had that particular pathogen (ever) or your immunity to it has waned. Though some pathogens don't work that way. For some, once the body sees them (either through a vaccine or through an infection) it's a very long immunity. That's why we can completely eradicate some (like smallpox) while others become endemic.

But not having been sick (with ANYTHING) didn't cause your cold to be more severe. We're talking about two different things here.

We are cruising on DCL next year. Is it possible to eat every meal of the trip without a buffet? (Even Castaway Cay?) It is my policy to avoid buffets whenever possible, but especially during vacation when an illness can derail your whole, expensive trip.

Because let's be honest, touching serving utensils is one thing. That's what hand sanitizer is for. But sneezeguards do not protect you from germs coming from people who aren't of adult stature. LOL. And you can't sanitize your food.

Self serve or served I really don't care but the food choices and quality were not up to DCL standards at Cabanas on our February 26th Fantasy cruise so that issue needs to be fixed. We almost thought that they were doing it on purpose to drive everyone to the restaurants for breakfast and lunch.
Agree

They typically have at least one MDR open for breakfast and lunch - they do take up a good bit of time though. I'm not positive about Castaway day though...there may be no sit-down option for lunch on that day.

I think your only sit-down option is back on the ship.

I have no fear of getting Covid, but at least with an upper respiratory infection you can be identified and isolated. People (esp little kiddos) can come down with noro or roto virus and no one knows you have diarrhea and didnt wash your hands as well as you could have. There's no vaccine for it and the incubation for noro is 1 or 2 days. I loved the WDW buffets in the past but I may or may not eat at Cabanas. I have a different mental tolerance to viruses than I did on my last visit to Disney in February 2020.

Just my opinion. Prefer no self serve. We will eat our breakfest, lunch and dinner in one of the main dining rooms. I'm ok with self serve drinks and even the ice cream, but for quick meals, we'll go to the walk-ups before any buffet.

Thanks for clarifying your response. It does seem that you were talking about a different thing than I was. I guess I wasn't precise enough in my wording.

What I said is that I had not been exposed to anything in a long time. "Anything" includes cold viruses. Not just that I hadn't experienced symptoms, but that there was little to no exposure. So that lack of exposure to cold viruses over time may have contributed to waning immunity to cold viruses.

Or maybe it was just a particularly nasty strain, or any of the other reasons you mentioned. The point was just that waning immunity could have plausibly contributed.

I wasn't suggesting that catching some other virus would have somehow helped maintain my immunity to the common cold, but I guess that's what you took from my words. Maybe you've encountered that particular misunderstanding before and assumed it here?

In any case, I think we agree. Thanks again for clarifying. I read your first response as implying that repeated exposure to a pathogen was irrelevant and unnecessary. Probably not what you intended, but it's kind of how it reads, at least to me, and IMO that's likely misleading to a lot of people.

This is one of the few things I'm not happy about. I really liked the idea of the CM's serving the food at Cabanas. These last two years have really changed how I feel about buffets. Its not so much the sharing of utensils but that the food can be coughed on, sneezed on, things dropped in it etc and you wouldnt know.

At least with CM's serving the food, there are far less people coming in contact with the food before it gets to your plate.

If Cabanas is self service on my September Norwegian Fjords cruise, then its very unlikely I will eat there and will only eat at MDR, room service and pool side.

I knew there were no sit down options on the island. I was not sure if they had a MDR open on Castaway Day since more people have to be on island for serving.

If there isn’t a sit down lunch that day there is quick service on the pool deck or room service. So yes

Given that unless it's changed a lot of the quick service has been grab and go I was not sure that would be acceptable to the poster not wanting to be getting food where other people have been around sneezing and touching.

I have on more than one occasion seen someone sneeze or cough in their hand and
then touch the serving utensils. I avoid and try to find a server to switch out.

Nowadays the family plan is be up early to be the first ones for breakfast. This works well
for me and one of my kids as we are up 5am all the time. DH and anyone else sleeping in will
look elsewhere.

On my last cruise when the dishes were being served I did not see nearly the piles of wasted food
on tables when guests left.
