Saddam Hussein execution botched?

According to your new defense secretary, they're already pretty much beat.

And what about innocent Iraqi's who will die as a result of this. I suppose you don't care about them either?

You know, it took way too many posts to get to the pay off. Brevity is the soul of wit and all......

The guards are all wearing hoods, (like an Al Qaeda execution)
Let's be fair, it is my understanding the hoods are to protect the executioners from being publicly ridiculed and/or singled out as targets.

It is nothing like an Al Queda execution.

Whatever your view on whether he should have been executed or not, didn't that sordid episode leave a bad taste in your mouth? This is supposed to be the all new, whiter than white Iraqi regime. Looks like the same old same old to me. Watching that video reminded me of the videos Al Qaeda put out when they execute someone.

How to make a martyr of someone in three easy steps.
What sordid episode?

They tried, convicted, sentenced, reviewed the case on appeal, then executed him. Al Queda certainly does not offer those opportunities to the people they execute.

Btw, why on earth did you watch the video?

Yes, that's a fair point, the guards would have to have their identity protected. It had the look of an Al Qaeda execution. That's what it reminded me of. It was so unproffessional, if that's an appropriate word to use in an execution.

That was my understanding, to protect the guards from repurcussions from Sadam loyalists.

Are you telling me this han't been shown on US TV news?

I watched the video. I wanted to see how Sadaam looked, the look in his eyes knowing he was about to die. But they show almost nothing. Just some guys putting the noose over him, then it cuts off.

And it wasn't like they were jumping around and screaming. This makes it sound like a much bigger deal than it was.

And it isn't clear enough to really see the expression on Sadaam's face.

Apparently, there's going to be an enquiry by the Iraqi government. Unfortunately, I think the horse has bolted. http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/art...KOT_0_TEXT0.xml&src=010307_1129_FEATURES_iraq

I think it's important to clarify the reason for the inquiry...(which has nothing to do with the way he was hanged or the hooded executioners- ie the things you are outraged about)

The Iraqi government has promised an investigation into how a witness at the hanging filmed it on a mobile phone and released the video to television stations and Web sites.

Didn't hangmen/executioners always wear hoods? Maybe even in the not to distant past. I thought it was to protect their identity (like in the mall - "look mommy, the guillotine guy").

Did you see it on the news?
Yeah. It was on CNN, I think, not sure exactly which channel.

You can watch it on the CNN website or You Tube, probably lots of others. If you want to. I know lots of folks would find it disturbing. But it sounds to me like you already saw it!

CNN showed the whole video? It was my understanding that the video they are talking about shows the whole thing, I could be wrong though. I never saw him actually hanged, just brought out and the noose put around the neck.

Look people. There's a second video making it's way around the news and internet. It shows the entire hanging and has audio. In the audio the guards can be heard chanting political statements, insulting SH and arguing with him before he is executed. Now what some of you CLEARLY don't understand is that there is a difference between judical execution which is what this was SUPPOSED to be and a state sponsored lynching. The guards actions made the hanging look political in nature instead of punitive. it made it look like a revenge killing instead of justice. And by opening their big fat mouths when they should have been shut, they martyred Saddam Hussein. It made the new Iraq government look like a bunch of thugs instead of the democratically elected figures George Bush wanted and one of the reasons we are sacraficing 3003 service men and women.

Some of the more vengful and blood thirsty posters really should think before they post.

Oh, I just read your previous post...we both saw the same thing. But, I think the hoopla is about the whole video.

I am not sure who you are talking about, but I am not vengeful or bloodthirsty.

My point is that I do not think we have the right to tell them how to carry out a sentence they ruled on. I understand the difference, I just don't think we have the right to impose our values on them.

It's up to the Iraqi government to decide if the executioners did something they were not allowed to do. And maybe that is the message they want to send out. That if you commit heinous crimes, you will suffer greatly. I don't know.

OK, I didn't see that. I thought the OP was just talking about the cut-off one.

Gotta go see if I can find the full one. Didn't know that was out there.

He was going to be martyred whether the guards said anything or not. That's pretty obvious. More violence would be a result of his execution, that too is pretty obvious. But why the US is somehow being incorporated for this "botched" execution is beyond me. Since when are we responsible for what people say? What should have been done?

Exactly, we did what we should have done. Took him there and left.

The rest was up to the Iraqis.
