Whatever your view on whether he should have been executed or not, didn't that sordid episode leave a bad taste in your mouth? This is supposed to be the all new, whiter than white Iraqi regime. Looks like the same old same old to me. Watching that video reminded me of the videos Al Qaeda put out when they execute someone.

How to make a martyr of someone in three easy steps.

That's how they execute people in Iraq. It is not our place to impose our judicial standards or penal system on them. Frankly we've done enough meddling in the internal affairs of other countries, and I'm glad that we didn't meddle in this one.

I guess I dont understand what you mean by "botched" Thats how they execute people in that country..

What video? Iam not sure I'd want to watch someone being hanged?
Is this played on the TV in the Us or are you talking about the net?

Someone at the hanging took a video on their phone. It's been widely shown in the UK. Although it doesn't show the actual hanging, you see Saddam with the noose around his neck. The guards are all wearing hoods, (like an Al Qaeda execution) and shouting taunts and insults. Not the way you'd expect at democratically elected government to execute someone, whatever their crimes.

I'm talking about the guards shouting insults at him before he was hanged. Haven't you seen the video?
:lmao:

Heaven forbid! Someone said something nasty to him?! Poor Sadaam. Calling him names doesn't mean the execution was "bothched." He still died.

I think he got off easy. He could have been put into his torture chambers with the family members of people he had tortured. Being called a few names is really not a big deal.

You think guards wearing hoods and shouting insults is a good PR exercise for the new Iraqi regime?

PR?!

It isn't about PR. They were executing a murderous *******. Those people suffered a LOT because of him, naturally they'd have (at the very least!) some nasty things to say to him. Have you NO imagination? Can you even begin to understand how they might feel?

This is a war. War isn't nice. And name-calling is the least of it.

That smacks of cultural insensitivity. Who are you, or any of us, to impose our delicate sensitivities on the Iraqi government?

As a matter of fact, Arab culture would typically have had Hussein beheaded instead of hanged.

Both sides of the debate in this country have to step back from and accept this execution as it is: The hawks just have to be satisfied that their enemy is dead, and the doves have to be satisfied that the Iraqi government did something contrary to what the American government asked them to do (delay the execution).

In whose mind? Cultures and customs vary widely throughout the world. Why are you trying to conform a culture to behave the way that we do in the US/Canada/UK/Australia/etc.? It was very typical behaviour for a Middle-Eastern culture, and I see nothing wrong with it. It's no different than the Arabic reporters who stood up and shouted in Arabic during the press conference where it was announced he was captured a few years ago. I saw nothing wrong with that either--in fact my heart went out to those two men for thier joy!

I'm curious why you even care, I mean seriously. This upsets you? Do you follow every execution that happens around the world to make sure it isn't "botched".

Of course it's about PR. The government, presumably wants to bring all sides together in Iraq. Allowing what went on at that execution, will only inflame Saddam supporters even more, meaning more reprisals against innocent people. Have YOU no imagination?

That was going to happen regardless. Have you NO imagination?

No, war isn't about PR. Or pieces of paper.

They already kill us every chance they get. There can't be more than that.

And I don't personally care if his crazy supporters start acting up. Let them be "inflamed", declare their stupid jihads, and come after us. We'll wipe them out, and that'll be that. I don't care what they think, and I'm not afraid of them.

They are too stupid and crazy to beat the United States military.

No, but this isn't just any old execution is it. And no, it doesn't upset me, so much as amaze me that this could have been handled so badly considering the repercussions.

According to your new defense secretary, they're already pretty much beat.

And what about innocent Iraqi's who will die as a result of this. I suppose you don't care about them either?

People die in wars. Some you intended to kill, some you didn't. That's war. It isn't nice, it isn't pretty.
