We (me, wife, girls 12/13) have been on DCL 5x (Magic 1x, Wonder 3x, Dream 1x) in the last 10 years and are considering a cruise on RCL out of Galveston (we live near Houston).

For those who have gone on both RCL and DCL, what are your thoughts? Obviously the theming/characters and lack of “Disney touches” would be noticed, but what do you feel is as good or better than DCL in comparison (if anything) and what is not as good?

The ships sailing out of Galveston are Adventure of the Seas and Allure of the Seas (Oasis class - the big ones).

Thanks!

I am also a Houstonian. We will be platinum on DCL after this Christmas, we normally take one cruise every year over the holidays. This past spring break, we did a 4 night on the Liberty of the Seas (which is an older ship) out of Galveston. My kids are 16, 13, and 11. Next year, we are doing RC (Adventure, 7 nights) for spring break and are doing Harmony of the Seas for Christmas (also 7 nights). This was for a few reasons. 1 we need two rooms and it was getting harder to find rooms next door on RC, and Disney still didn't have the schedule for Christmas out, and we prefer 7 nights and for the last few years, DCL has only been doing 4-5-6 nights when we can cruise, and that's not for us.

RCL is different. For spring break I low bid an upgrade to a suite and got it, which was nice. As for dining, the buffet is better on RC and the main dining is not as good. The kids really liked RC better. The ice skating, flow rider, rock wall. (And that ship didn't have the slide or the zip line even). We got the soda package. It was great, and the kids liked picking out their own drinks. We bought The Key, which gives you internet on one device per person and gives you a priority boarding and disembarkation, and they have special key only times on the onboard attractions, so you can ice skate and do the rock wall with no lines. Worth every penny. We used the Key benefits more than any of the suite privileges. I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Note: Our cruise was pre-rona so may not reflect any changes caused by that.

We sailed on Harmony of the Seas and found it to be as good as DCL (if you aren't super set on the Disney theming/touches) in most respects and better in a few. There was only one area they were not as good and that was the pricing of the extras. It tended to skew higher and there were more extras than on DCL but they are cheaper for the base cruise than DCL so I guess it works out in the end?

We found the buffet quality to be better than DCL's, although the menu tends to be the same with minor adjustments most days. The non-MDR food was also excellent.

MDR food was as good as, if not slightly better than, DCL depending on what you had.

There is a ton of stuff for people to do too, at least on the Oasis class.

Show quality was right up there with DCL in my opinion though their venues are smaller than DCL's so getting in can be iffy.

The only thing that was a huge 'this stinks' was the stench of cigarette smoke from the casino. It was not contained to the casino and could be smelled if you were nearby an entrance to the casino. There was a MDR that was almost right outside one of those. We had a table near the door to the MDR and could smell it.

We are Platinum on DCL and Diamond on RCL so have a lot of experience with both. Probably cruise 2x on Royal for every Disney cruise we do.

Obviously we love RCL seeing as how often we sail it, but yes it is different. When my kids were younger we favored more Disney, they are 9 and 14 now and have a great time on both. I agree with previous poster, the food in main dining is better on Disney, but we also really enjoy the upscale dining on Royal which is not just adult-only. Royal is more adventure and thrill focused, especially on their larger ships. We favor the Oasis class but have done just as many on Freedom class. Allure is a beautiful ship.

On Royal we just feel like there is more to do. Mini golf, surfing, ice skating, zip-line, watreslides, the diving show is amazing. You aren't going to get as many Disney-quality Broadway styled shows on Royal (Although Allure does have Grease which was pretty good), but it's a different kind of entertainment. We love their island Coco Cay (but we sail from FL, going from Galveston, you probably wont make it there)

For Adults, probably more to do on Royal. When we do Disney cruises we find the ship quiet by 10pm. On Royal things are going til 2am. The adult pool areas are better on Royal, and they seem to have way more hot tubs than Disney ships.

I would call Disney the more premium experience, extra touches on service and quality, Royal is more action and activities, food is not as good unless you upgrade to specialty and then its a foodie experience.

If you have any questions about the Allure I can answer anything. Haven't been on the Adventure...DCL is the only line we have done smaller older ships (how dare I call the Magic old LOL, we love it). If you have never been on a huge mega-ship like Allure it is worth a try.

I'm also a Diamond member on RCL. Love sailing on Royal especially the Oasis class ships. Tons of stuff to do. The ship is significantly bigger than any of the Disney ships. Shows will not be as good. Disney definitely has it beat there. In terms of food, you won't have a rotation for MDR, you'll be in the same one unless you do specialty restaurants. However, I do like the variety of food on Royal Caribbean. They have different menus pop in every night with themes. I actually enjoy RCL food quite a bit. You certainly won't run out of things to do and if you do choose to do the Allure, one mistake people make is to try and shove EVERYTHING in during the trip. There is just too much to do and remember to relax.

I've been on DCL 11 times and RCL Allure 2 times. I think you can have a great cruise on either one. I believe DCL has better customer service and less upcharges on things. My daughter and I thought it was a pain to have to carry a cup around on RCL for the soda package. I agree that the pool areas are better on RCL than DCL and that there are more activities for adults in the evenings.

My teen enjoyed the rock-climbing wall and other RCL activities but felt that they were things to do once and done for her. She still prefers DCL.

As far as the food goes, I really like the rotational dining on DCL and having the same server every night. However, I didn't think that the quality was that different from one to the other (with the exception of the Wish that I prefer.) RCL has more options in the evening for food.

We love the Oasis class ships and I think they're perfect for 12/13 yrs old. There are more "active" activities than on Disney (great slides, FloRider, rock climbing wall, etc.). My daughter (13) gets bored on DCL. I love that there are multiple pools too! We think the ice skating and aqua/diving shows are great and the main show is good as well. Food is good on RC as well. The specialty restaurants on Allure were so good and I loved that I could bring my daughter (unlike Disney). I also love that there is a buffet option for dinner, for those nights you just don't want to sit through a MDR dinner.

I've sailed Voyager class, Oasis class, Freedom class and Quantum class ships. I've also sailed Disney several times (though admittedly not platinum yet). I feel like there is a recent post that really sums up how I feel about RCL vs Disney so I won't hammer it again but I will say I differ in this way from most. I do not like Oasis ships. They're far too large for me. The aqua shows are down right amazing but it just doesn't feel much like a ship to me if that makes sense. I've found that my happy spot is probably the Quantum class ships (specifically Odyssey). The Voyager and Freedom class ships are nice but I feel like they're a bit darker in the Promenade and feel a little older than the Quantum.

I will also say that I much prefer Disney stage shows to the new ones on RCL. The RCL Broadway style shows like Mamma Mia, Grease, and Hairspray are fantastic but the new RCL shows (talking Wonder OTS and Odyssey OTS) tend to be a musical revue with a loose story. While shows like Believe or Seas the Adventure are similar in that way, I much prefer listening to Disney songs in that style.

Crew was nice on both lines but I feel like the crew on Disney (especially cruise staff) are a bit more personable. I also REALLY miss the movie theaters on Disney when I'm on RCL. For me, I've kinda moved to the point where one of my cruises every year will be Disney but the others will be Celebrity and RCL. I really want to try Virgin and Viking at some point. These are just my opinions of course and at the end of the day, I'd rather be on a ship than on land :P

We have only sailed on Oasis of the Seas and it was fine, but no DCL. The pic below is from San Juan. We parked beside a huge RCL ship. When we were ready to go back to the fantasy, we walked right back on. No line. Not so on the RCL ship. The line stretched off the pier and wrapped around a city street. And it was raining. That was enough for us that we were not interested in the large RCL ships. Too many people. 7AB6CB38-A3DE-48F2-B106-0DDD9354D486.jpeg

I am a platinum DCL and did Harmony of the Seas back in June. I did not care for RCL and have a thread on it if you look back at my history….

I will never sail RCL again. Food in MDR was not good. Staff was indifferent, had to keep waiting in line to get random charges removed from my account, shower spilled all into the bathroom, no in room entertainment, Freestyle machines were dirty/ not maintained, out of flavors…. It was not for me …

Let me throw you a curveball. We sailed Oasis this past January and just didn’t care for it. Food was our main issue. There are lots of options, but a majority of those are extra fee. We didn’t care for the included food.

Surprisingly (to us), we tried Carnival Mardi Gras in March and absolutely loved it. Way more included (we felt) than on Oasis. Also, it was much different than our other Carnival experience (Sunshine, which we also enjoyed, but the ship doesn’t compare!). The ship was MUCH nicer. I think it is a direct challenge to the RCL ships. Shaq’s Big Chicken is worth it alone!

If I recall, the third ship in that class (after Mardi Gras and Celebration), will be Jubilee and if I remember correctly, it will be going out of Galveston. I would definitely consider that!

I've sailed on Allure and the Magic.

RCL is without doubt, a very very good value. RCL wasn't for me, but if you put me on a RCL ship, I would still have an enjoyable cruise. I also think it's good to try out other cruise lines occasionally and see how they do things differently.

Main differences I noticed:
- Allure was more crowded. The Magic was more chill and less manic. On Allure you get the usual stuff that happens when it's crowded... more lines everywhere, spilled food that wasn't cleaned up, kids running up the halls late at night, etc.
- Allure had aggressive upselling, like staff coming around to your table in the buffet while you're eating and pressuring men to buy a dining package to treat their gfs/wives. They might not do that anymore, but that happened on my voyage in 2018 and was not ok, IMO.
- RCL has many more adrenaline packed activities that might appeal more to a pre-teen or teenager like rock climbing walls, surf simulators, zip lines, you name it.
- Food and service were pretty similar, with a slight edge to Disney. I do like how RCL's buffets are open all day.
- Allure has a futuristic Las Vegas mall vibe to it. The Magic and the other non-Wish ships have a more nostalgic, nautical 1930s classic vibe.

For me, DCL is "nicer." But, for the prices DCL charges (2-3x higher than RCL), I felt DCL wasn't 2-3x better than RCL, and I wish Disney would step up their game and close the value gap.
That said, I would still prefer to sail DCL if I could, because it's just more my vibe. But I can see why RCL is popular, and I certainly wouldn't say no to RCL to save some cash or if a family member was inviting me on a trip.

We NEVER get the bid upgrade and have done low and high bids. How’d you manage snagging one? How much over the minimum did you go? Thanks.

My problem with Royal since we cruise often is they don’t vary the main dining menu on any ship or location! What’s on the menu Day 1 in the Caribbean is the same as Day 1 Alaska or Med.! They need a new executive chef too. My lasagne and goulash and even grilled NY strip steak outshines theirs every time. It’s their recipes. Love main dining on Disney ships! Also love the theater and first run movies! The aqua-duck is prettt great too!

We are platinum on DCL and Select on Celebrity, and sailed Harmony of the Seas B2B in July. Here's my mini-review:

Food & drinks:
We were not impressed with the Windjammer buffet - there's no outdoor seating, the serving areas seemed cramped, and the food was okay, but not great. I would say we prefer DCL/Celebrity for the buffet than RCL. We did enjoy the Solarium Bistro was very good for breakfast. The MDR was fine. The specialty dining was good - better quality food than the MDR - but not worth the premium. We did enjoy the Schooner Bar, where my college-age daughter got the bartenders to mix her custom mocktails, and Sorrento's pizza on the Promenade. We had the Ultimate Dining package and Refreshment package on one cruise, and neither on the other, so we did pay out of pocket for alcoholic drinks and drink prices seem higher than DCL. Drink packages seemed to be priced higher than on Celebrity as well, hence not purchasing alcoholic packages, and did not spend even half of one package on drinks for 2 of us.

Spaces & Events:
Our sailings were at or over capacity, and we found that while HotS does absorb the crowds well, it was just not the right ship class for us. There were a lot of tiny venues that when they had events ended up overcrowded - we attended Disney Music Trivia, which was in such a small venue that there were teams sitting on the floor and spilling out into the Promenade. The schedule of events seemed haphazard and not well planned, with either nothing scheduled, or multiple overlapping events geared towards the same demographic. It felt to us that RCL expected everyone on the ship to be spending their time on the pool deck utilizing those amenities (pools, flowrider, slides, rock wall, etc.) in general, so other events were limited in space and schedule. Arts & Crafts events had limits of 15-25 participants on a 6000 passenger ship. After sailing DCL and X, we found the lack of live music in multiple venues... odd. There was music on the schedule, but we're used to both other lines having frequent random music in the atrium, or a lounge you can go listen to music in during the day - there was none of that on RCL. The travelling pianist was cool - especially when he was in the elevator - but otherwise you had to go hunt for the music, it didn't really find you. The Ice Shows were good, Grease was okay (cast was great), but having to both schedule shows on the app and not have mainstage shows every day was also odd. We did see the Aqua show 3 times as they only had one show running, and it was entertaining. I would rate DCL and X both above RCL in general daytime/event entertainment, but they're probably all about equivalent in main stage/headliner entertainment.

Stateroom:
We had both an Oceanview verandah with a larger veranda and a Central Park verandah. The OV was great - plenty of space for the 3 of us on the balcony to enjoy the views and the sea. The staterooms were fine for 3 people - we had no issues with storage or bathroom sharing. The interiors of both rooms were pretty much identical, though the CP balcony was connecting, and we could hear our neighbors very well. We did enjoy the live music in Central Park from our CP balcony, but found that we had minor issues with not being able to see the horizon that we never had with previous inside staterooms, probably due to the lack of visibility of the motion of the ship. Even with a single bathroom, I think the layout of the RCL ships were good for the 3 of us in a room, but the couch-turned-bed was never returned to a couch while we were there (staffing? Maybe that's normal?). I'd say RCL and X are similar in balcony stateroom ratings, with DCL having a slight edge due to the split bath and the curtain between the spaces.

Staff:
The staff was great, but there are a *lot* of people on Oasis class ships, and unless you find one bar or space to frequent, they don't really know you. On both X and DCL we would see our servers and bar staff frequently, and they would learn who we are, what our preferences are, and often find us and offer those to us. On RCL, we had to go order at a bar more often than not as it was obvious they were understaffed - bar managers were working the pool bar on a regular basis. The staff was friendly and helpful, but just obviously busy. We also found the lack of places to set glasses/plates/etc. on the pool deck just... weird. DCL has obvious areas to bus your tables to. RCL doesn't really have that - and often not enough staff to clean up after people either. We have found similar issues on X, but the staff there seemed more on top of cleaning the pool deck.

Summary:
We really enjoyed the itineraries we sailed on RCL, and Cocoa Cay is a great private island, but we enjoyed Labadee more as it had a bit more of a Castaway Cay feel (less nickel-and-dimed). We would sail RCL again, especially an itinerary with both Cocoa Cay and Labadee, but not on an Oasis-class ship, and not until we are Elite on Celebrity so we get Diamond perks on RCL. We found we do enjoy DCL and Celebrity more, but we were glad we tried the ship. It was fun - we had a great time and enjoyed the ship and had a great vacation, but just found this particular class of ship isn't for us and the way we cruise. It was a different kind of cruising (in my opinion) from DCL, which isn't bad, but wasn't what we expected and didn't really fit well into our cruising preferences. It looks like the smaller ships on RCL are more like what we're used to, so I look forward to trying those in the future.

We are Platinum on DCL, have no idea what we are on RCL as I don't really pay attention. Twelve sailings, what is that? Doesn't matter. Have only sailed Oasis Class, the Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas. We will be back on board Symphony Saturday for a B2B sailing, can not wait.

First time we walked onto a RCL ship my thought was, what have we done? It was so different from walking onto DCL. I was worried. 30 minutes later my thought was , why haven't we done this sooner?
The why was because I kept hearing how awful it would be. How you would be nickeled and dimed. Harassed by the staff to purchase things. How the guests are all disgusting drunks. How the entertainment was subpar. How the food was garbage. How their island didn't stack up to Castaway Cay. How the cabins were smaller and box like. None of that proved true.
If we book a veranda cabin, add the premium drink package, tack on the ultimate dinning package, we still pay a lot less than we would on DCL for the cabin alone. That's a bonus. I enjoy having a drink package and not having to wonder what the final bill will be. I enjoy the different dinning venues. Disney has two specialty dining offers, RCL has 5 or 6 and let me tell you, Wonderland blew us away. RCL offers my time dining so I don't have to be there at a set time, I can go as I wish. They have a buffet at diner which we found was our preference, loads on offer. They even had a noodle station which I didn't find until late in our last cruise. We are always discovering something we missed.
Their shows are very good, the aqua show is always a hit with us.
We love Central Park and have been booking CP cabins. We enjoy the veranda however the ocean veranda is not our thing in the evening after dark. Not much you can see. With the CP cabins, you can sit out and people watch. They have a string quartet that plays there in the evenings so having a glass of wine on the veranda while the music flows up is so calming. The lights twinkle. They pipe in evening noises such as crickets. In the morning they pipe in birds singing so breakfast on the veranda is also very pleasant. Not everyone enjoys CP but we love it.
Their adult only area tops DCL's IMO. It's a very nice area.
The only thing I feel DCL has over RCL is that DCL includes room service whereas RCL charges $7.95 most of the day. They do a continental breakfast with no charge but if you want lunch ordered into your room expect to pay a delivery fee.
I don't think you can go wrong with booking RCL Oasis class ships but as you can see from your other replies, it's not for everyone. I would strongly suggest you at least try it once and make your own opinions. You could be pleasantly surprised and save a ton of money to boot.
Whatever you choose, have a great time.

Shaq’s Big Chicken is worth it alone!
Guys Burgers and Shaq's Big Chicken are the best. Makes me miss the Mardi Gras all the time. I wish other cruises had selections as good as those. I always get sad because Planet Hollywood carries similar burgers to Guys Burgers, but they cost $20! I need to book another Mardi Gras cruise...

We've done 4 Disney cruises (with #s 5, 6 & 7 already booked for next year) and are doing our 1st RCL cruise next month on Wonder of the Seas (we're 2 middle aged adults, no kids). I'm both excited and nervous!

Yes they are! Blue Iguana and Guy's Pig and Anchor as well. I know that there is a lot of RCL love on this board, but I wonder if any of these folks have tried Mardi Gras. IMHO, it is a game-changer for Carnival. Way nicer than their other ships. Can't wait for Celebration and Jubilee to come out. Surprisingly, we found that there is just so much more included on Mardi Gras than our Oasis sailing. Much of the food that was included on Mardi Gras was upcharge on Oasis...

Also looking forward to the new Sun Princess...
