Review at work....rant long

After the review I went to my office and noted a few things and emailed him, he responded with "I understand". I emailed him back and said would you attach this to my review and he said yes. I saw him put it in the file. So, at least that is there....with my explanations.

Three days is low! I get 12 days sick and 24 days vacation. I have about 140 days saved because I'm not out much. That will be a big extra paycheck when I retire!

3 sick days a year seems pretty slim? My husband probably has over 2 weeks worth built up right now. He had built it up that high before our son was born and took 3 weeks off to be home (got 1 week paternity time and took the other 2 weeks as sick time). I just can't believe you are only allowed 3 sick days per year!!
Yep....3 sick days. That's it! I have 2 weeks vacation and after 10yrs, I get 3 weeks. 3 weeks is the max vacation too. It's a big company too. We have 10 facilities, plus sister facilities. Over 300 employees at my location alone. A lot of the workers are union, office people aren't.

I would NEVER have an issue with that many days. I am jealous. :) Lucky you.

Believe me I don't complain!! That doesn't even include the paid holidays! I love working for the School board!!

Once again, I agree with Nowellsl:

But, only Lewski709 knows the atmosphere of her job, so if she's confident that this won't happen, then she would know. It's different everywhere.

My next job is gonna have more sick days so I don't even have to worry. ;)

 Boy, I can understand why you're upset! What nerve!!

I had the best boss in the world at my last job. She always said "you're a Mother first! Everything else comes second!" I never took off more time than I was allowed in a year due to taking care of (then I only had 1 child) my son. Of course, I did hear from other girls in the office that they had gripes about me taking time off. Well, then my Mom was diagnosed with Cancer & I had to take care of her. The way it worked out, I never even got to give notice at work about quitting. I just called my boss (basically after leaving my Mom's doctors office) & told her that I didn't think I'd be returning. :( Anyway, she held the job open for as long as she could & then she had to release me. She obviously believed what she preached about family coming first.

We're still in touch with each other & I'm so ever grateful I worked for someone like her during the time my Mom was diagnosed. It was a tough enough time then. After my Mother passed away, she told me that if ever I'm in the job market again & if she has any openings, she'd love to have me back.

So poo-poo on the other snots in the office that were always trying to draw attention to my being off when I had to take the day off due to my son being sick!

Sounds like you need a boss like I had!

I think the key to being a working Mother is to realize that sometimes you have to give up something in order to get the company to meet your needs.

I would suggest going back to your boss and negotiating more time off (Personal Days) in exchange for no raise or some other reduced benefits. It seems obvious to me that 3 days a year is not going to cover the sick needs of two small children. The policy as it stands doesn't meet your needs.

If you are a valuable employee, they should be willing to work with you. If they don't want to or can't, then it's time to look for another job.

If you work in a big company and are still bothered about this comment, I would go to HR and they can amend your performance review.

I would be very surprised if HR can just wave a wand and amend her review. They may be able to add more comments on her part, but I doubt that they can change or delete the comments of her rater.

AFR, I agree. HR can do nothing other than keep my file and advise me on policies. It's up to my supervisors to ammend anything including making exceptions to the policies, which they have obviously done. HR doesn't enforce much....the actual supervisors are to do that here.

I got a review last year form the Principal of our school. I came into my classroom and said to the teacher I work with - Hey thanks for the good review. He was surprised because he had absolutely NO input. The Princ. has said maybe 1/2 dozen words to me in 4 years but the person I work with 5 hours a day/5 days a week wasn't asked if I was doing my job. Can you believe that one!!

I think the issue may be that you are a manager in the group.

I'm a manager and I'm held to a higher standard than my group. I would never be able to get away with taking more days than given when I'm required to impose disciplinary action (up to and including termination) for my employees that do. Your employees may be the ones that are providing the negative feedback. I know that if I was doing it, I'd have 7 or 8 folks in HR asking "why can she when we can't?".

So even though your bosses may understand and think it's ok because they understand your reasoning, etc. they may just be telling you that your employees don't feel quite ok about it. JMHO

Wow! I get 10 sick days and two days that I can use as personal business days. Until last year, I could only use three days total for sick days for family.

Three days, three kids, just didn't cut it. When I ran out of the three sick days allowed for kids, I was allowed to use my personal days. After that, it's time off without pay. gross pay amount divided by number of days scheduled per year equals how much is deducted from the following paycheck. (That's when I realized we didn't get paid for holidays like Christmas!) Now I can use all ten on the kids if I need to.

If we don't use our personal days during the year, they disappear without compensation. If we have sick days left at the end of our careers, we don't get paid anything at all for them.

** I'd keep an eye on anything put in writing in an evaluation. If it's written down, they are watching it carefully. **

It's nobody's business but me and my supervisors. Since it is up to them, HR has no say in anything.

We get no personal days, at all.

We get no personal days, at all.

Since you are a manager, I think it would be great if you take the initiative in asking for a more family friendly leave policy. If it's a large company, I'm sure you are not the only one with childcare issues.

Maybe a certain number of your vacation days and your sick days could be converted to Personal Days and all employees could take them off for whatever reason. Childless people also appreciate having time to take care of Personal Business without having to jusitify it.

I would definately be writing Memos to your Managers and Human Resources - and I have a feeling that many people in your company would appreciate it.

We can accumulate up to 500 hours vacation leave that carries over from year to year. Sick leave is unlimited, and we are compensated 100% for both when we retire! If you have over 500 hours of vacation accumulated you have to take it off before the first of every year or you loose it. I haven't had any problem taking it since I have become addicted to WDW. I used to participate in the sick leave buy back program (they will buy back up to 4 days of your sick leave at 80% compensation) then I decided I'd rather spend the four days at Disney!! Some of the vacation leave has to be taken at Christmas (2 weeks off) and spring break (1 week off) but I don't know anyone who complains about that!! I don't think I could work for a company who is so strict about taking leave - I've been spoiled for the last 19 years!

I get the same thing! The principals dont say much (there are four principals) to any of the support staff.

The review I got last year was a 30 second thing. I walked in he said you're doing fine, and left.

To my knowledge, they have never asked any of my team teachers for any input
