Retail Request

Words we should follow all year, not just at the holidays.

You ain't joking!! It's never acceptable to be rude to sales people or wait staff. They are working just as hard to earn their wage, as everybody else.

Same here. People probably think I'm nuts, but I used to HATE having to fold an entire table of shirts at the end of the night when I worked at Structure, WAY back when :)

Me too, I remember the time it to fold and refold and refold again

I will add another one. If you are searching through a rack of clothes and something falls off a hanger, PUT IT BACK on the hanger, don't leave it on the floor. When I worked retail that bothered me so much and even when I go shopping now I see it and it bothers me just as much. If I see something on the floor I pick it up even if I didn't put it there. I'm amazed at the people who just leave it there

If I have to take a sweater or something folded off a shelf, I refold it the best I can, but I can never get it back the way it was and I know someone has to go refold it after me. I'm sorry!!!!!

Do you work at JoAnn's?? I do, and I could have written your post!

Here's one to add:

7. Please do not feel free to open the door to our break room and say "I hate to bother you while you are on your break, BUT..." and then proceed to ask us to help you with a million and one things. Chances are, this is the first time we have sat down since we got to work, we are tired and hungry, and probably only get 15 minutes anyway. Honestly, we don't mind directing you to ONE item, but other than that, find someone out on the sales floor.
Are you serious? Wow, the gall of some people. I have a feeling I would not say something nice to them. :rotfl:

If you go through SELF checkout lines please do not complain I'm not bagging your groceries. You opted to go in that line!

If you don't want to choose a cart with trash in it when you start your
I love it when you go through a regular register and you have to bag your own groceries. I'm fine with that, I understand that they have cut back on front end personnel and you don't get personalized service like you once did. But half the time I end up with the lazy cashier who just stands there and stares at me while I'm bagging. They are done ringing everything up and apparently that is all they are gonna do. They just stand there and tell me how much I owe. Heaven forbid they threw something in a bag for me.

If I have to take a sweater or something folded off a shelf, I refold it the best I can, but I can never get it back the way it was and I know someone has to go refold it after me. I'm sorry!!!!!

I try to do the same thing, but I know it's pointless, they are just going to have to come along behind me and fix it right.

Don't be sorry, your effort doesn't go unappreciated. To me, not at least trying to put things back the way you found them just shows a lack of respect for the people who work there, and the item itself. I really don't hold a high opinion of people who think nothing of trashing a pile of clothes and leave it behind for the workers and the other customers to deal with, in case you couldn't tell

1. Please don't yell at the cashier because your coupon has expired. It's not his/her fault.

2. Please don't yell at the cashier because you're maxed out on your credit card or we cannot take your check. Most of the time, there is a valid reason.

3. Please don't yell at the cashier about the price of an item, coupon policy, the fact that you had to stand in line, or that the store ran out of something. I assure you that the cashier has no control over any of those things and yelling at them only makes their (and your) day more miserable.

The sad thing is most people are decent and understanding. The very few bad customers are the ones that always stick in your mind.

When trying on bathing suits.. please for the love of everything out there, leave your panties on! You are not the first or only one to try these on.

I work at Hallmark and I wish I could print this out and post it all over the store

One thing I remember from working retail many years ago is how people would just leave the clothes they tried on all jumbled up in the dressing room.

Off the hangers, laying on the floor and bench, inside out. I didn't realize that retail employee translated into servant in some languages.

When trying on clothes, please bring in what you want to try on. It is NOT the job of the dressing room attendent to go back into the racks of clothes because you didn't get the right size. We are not your personal shoppers. Go get it yourself!

I used to work at a Disney store and loved when a guest would get angry about something they would say " I own stock in this company" Like that matters and we should do whatever they want.

Now I work elsewhere and the angry guest now says "I have spent thousands here" and should get whatever they want.

WE DON"T CARE. We have to do what corporate tells us and are not your slaves. The best is when a guest yells for a district manager's telephone number, knowing they will create a guest issue.

These are just a few people but they sure spoil it for everyone. 95% of our guests are very nice and make our job fine.

I haven't worked retail for years but thought that I would share what I experienced at Macy's on Sunday.

Don't butt in line when it's clear that the clerk is helping another customer and say "this will only take a minute" and then get mad when the clerk tells you that she will not be able to hold your bags (not even items purchased from the store) so that you don't have to carry them or take them to the car so that you can continue shopping. :scared1:

I do seasonal retail work now and then and last year had my worst experience with someone lingering after close. Store closed at 10p..she was notified more than once and gently herded to the front with 2 FULL carts of stuff. Then as I am ringing her up she kept dashing off and grabbing things to add to it. Her total was close to $400. She then freaked out and said "OMG I don't understand why it is so much" and then proceeded to make me take off and add back items until she was within her "limit" (that was barely $100..how she thought she would be at or under $100 with 2 entire carts full of stuff is beyond me nor can I understand why she didn't speak up when her total hit $100..instead she waited until I rang up every single thing before saying "Oh no I can't pay that much). We were stuck there until around 11pm because of this person and thankfully the overnight crew kindly agreed to return the pounds of crap she couldn't pay for so the rest of us could go home.

Lol.. a little love from the cosmetics counter:

* Please do not fault the person behind the counter because they do not have a free gift. They just work there and do not make the rules.

* Please do not continue to badger them if there is anything you can give them IF you choose to buy the products. This is not a flea market or a garage sale. Do you try and barter when you buy shoes, purses and jeans?

* Do not just ask for samples. This tells us you have no intention of buying and just want free product. Instead, find a product you would like to try, and ask if there is a specific sample of the product you are interested in. If we have it--we will give it--we'd love for you to try before you buy--but at least know what you're asking for. The samples can be expensive and some counters are required to track who they give them to and follow up within a week to see if they liked it. Some also only give to those who purchase of have had a consultation. And sometimes... the vendor doesn't drop them off to the store and they really don't have any!

* Tis the season to want your makeup done for parties and dances. The consultant took their time away from the sales floor to make you pretty--buy a product or two from them.

* If a product is discountinued or re-formulated.... this also is not the consultant's fault so don't freak out on us. They know what replaced and is close and can help you. The formula you've been using for 20 years may not be the best for you now--and probably isn't the same color for you either--let us help you. If you're still unhappy---try amazon or ebay and find the old, funky product online and continue to use.

* We clean our stuff. Trust me, we have to work around it all day and you better believe we do a ton of cleaning. We use the testers too and want to make sure what we're using is in tip-top shape. If we catch someone being unsanitary beyond our control--we toss it--that's just gross. If you want to try something on and you're not sure of the proper way---just ask.

* Don't let anyone sell you something you don't want or can't affort. Get what YOU want. Returns look bad on us and we'd rather you just get what you can afford and what you'll use.

I agree with ALL of these! I just recently left my retail management job for another line of work all together. I wish I could print these out and give them to my old store to post on the counter.

I have a few more -

-I don't care if you took 50 items into the dressing room...DO NOT leave them in a jumbled heap on the floor. Even if you don't hang them right..at least place them back on the hanger. It was probably my biggest pet peeve while I was at the store.

-Do not threaten the cashier with calling corporate because they won't/can't/refuse to return something that is 4 years old, ripped and faded without a receipt. We have a return policy...it's posted. If there was an issue with the item, you would have known when you first bought it.

-I know coupons can be a pain...I understand...I really do. BUT...that being said...the exclusions are printed ON the thing. Don't shop, then come to the counter and act all upset and bad mouth the store because you can "never use the coupons. Why do they bother sending them out?". Ummm...there are 999 things you can use it on and about 6 you can't.

-Don't swear at me. Last Christmas season, I had a man use various lovely words at me, and it didn't help him get what he wanted. In fact, if you get TOO abusive, I can and will ask you to leave and if you refuse, you can say hello to our local police officers.

-Totally agree about the closing time. Our store changed our hours to help save some money over a year ago. It's clearly posted. We would even try and assist you in making your selection faster close to closing time. Why do think that we are now being "rude"? I would try to be passive aggressive (although I had at least one associate who was very straight forward about our closing time). I would turn off the music...when that failed...I'd turn one bank of lights off. It never failed...someone would try on 35 items, leave them a mess, start to get rung up and decide to continue to look while being rung out and find more items and THEN, have a coupon. Most people were understanding but more often than not...the customers just didn't care.

-Be slightly cognizant of your actual size....destroying the clothes because you thought that you could squeeze into it isn't cool. Oh...and if you have any issues with your stomach that day, or possibly a bleeding sore...PLEASE don't try on the clothes. 'Nuff said.

I have a TON of respect for those of you still in retail...I just got so incredibly burned out. I'm a helpful, friendly person...but my ability to resist the negativity got worn very very thin. I try to be a good customer now to others...I totally understand.

I don't understand - most attendants at most stores tell me that is EXACTLY what they are there for. Guess it depends on the store?

I've worked retail before and I guess I always figured it WAS my job to wait on customers and clean up their messes. What other reason do retail stores have staff for? Well, to cash them out and take their money of course. I always figured that there was little point for customers to fold/put away since I always had to do it again the "right way" anyway.

.

OMG  I can't even put into words the "ewww" I am feeling (and I am sure that pales in comparison to having to deal with it!)

As a "try to be considerate retail custome", can I ask 1 thing of your retail folk? Can you please find a more friendly way to fold your things? Sometimes, I have no choice but to unfold something to either eyeball the size, see a tag, etc. I can never for the life of me fold it back the way you guys do it! I try, but I always feel bad that someone is going to have to come behind me and fix it!

Do you all take classes for it? please share!

And maybe just to help you feel better, bad customers are bad customers, and they even annoy OTHER customers LOL!

Another retail refugee. My contribution to the list. sorry if it is a repeat.

Yes, I know it is frustrating when a store advertises a great deal and they are out of stock with the item but please do not curse me out. Yelling at me, telling me you could have my job (which on days like that, I would gladly give you) or telling me you spend thousands of dollars in this store is not going to magically make the item appear.
