Renting Points

I have to agree with Greenban. While I have had renters that were wonderful, I have also had people who had me check different options, make numerous calls to MS, and made a verbal or email commitment on a weekend, telling me what I was to book for them on Monday morning. Then they came back to me on Sunday night trying to dicker the price lower or tell me they had seen posts offering $6.50 or just flat cancelling because they found a better deal. Granted no money had changed hands but I had spent considerable time and also turned away other would-be renters because I had a commitment.

This is absolutely true. I really like the people I choose to rent to (They meet my standards, and hopefully I meet theirs), but at least 30% of the people responding to my recent 2K point thread, were bargin shoppers, many of whom already had reservations or at least dealings with other renters here on the DIS (Golly I just love the 'find other posts by USERNAME' feature.), or thought because I had so many points that I was desperate to unload them.

A little DIS board sluthing on rental inquirer revealed this person to be a partner in what looked to be a prestegious lawfirm (at least from the firms website). I wouldn't come down on my price by $30 to meet the individual's offer. I just didn't like the "tude" in the back and forth, and I held to my price. Why should I give $30 to someone who likely makes 5-6X my salary. This person said they had an offer from another DVCer at another resort for this time frame. I wished them a happy DVC stay with the other DVCer and said goodbye. Had I accepted this offer, I may have been disapponted as this renter shopped for someone elses lower rental rate.

Eesh, the whole playing one owner against another, there are just some things where it's not ok to bargain.

Most of us, when we have points to rent, just put the price per point right up there. It's not like a moroccan bazaar where it's expected we would haggle!

I saw that one, too, gblast. Did you get a response??

He didn't get a taker on that one, but he lowered his offering on other threads to $10 per point :lmao:. So much for trying to raise the minimum price.

...<snip>... I have to agree with Greenban.

I'm sorry to go off thread, but this is only the first or second time anyone has said this, without the, I hate to agree with.... leading the reply.

:worship: :worship: :worship: Thank you Mikesmom, you have made my month!

Now back to the topic at hand!

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, but I just recently rented my points out. First renter, a family that had never rented before. Second family ,were frequent renters... Both renters have been on the Disboards enough that I was able to check them out. One of the renters asked *kindly* if I was willing to go to $9. I said that I couldn't. After all I'm using my rental money to go on vacation this year. We went to WDW twice last year and want to do a huge family vacation in Dec 2007. So we don't need our points this year. This person was wonderful. Never asked again for reduced points. He even had an offer for $9 and still rented from me. I checked availability , both families were on board and I made ressies.

Frequent emails , phone calls with one of the renters. I gave my phone number to the frequent renter, but she felt comfortable enough. I know that we won't rent our points Every year. I rented them this year b/c we KNEW we weren't going to WDW this year. When my DH and I bought into DVC we bought into it b/c we wanted guaranteed vacations. All this talk about dues and what dues will cost in the next 40 years and blah , blah, blah!!

My DH and I were not the greatest planners when it came to our vacations in the past. If we didn't invest in DVC that money would have been spent on something else. I know people are talking about value of money if you were to invest it into a CD, but we wouldn't have done that... we probably would have spent it. For us this is a pre-paid vacation.

If you want to rent your points for $9, then do it, there will be renters for you. If you want to rent your points for $10,then do it, there will be renters for you. If you want to rent your points for $11, then do it.... there will be renters for you.

Do what feels comfortable for you and your family.

Regardless, YOU OWN YOUR POINTS !!! Do whatever is right for you!

DVC is a pre-paid vacation at BEST....Not an investment..... We are hoping to share it with our girls and their families (when they have families)... and that is why we bought in. For anyone who bought into DVC to make a profit, I don't think they'll make it.

All this debating is silly... Don't feel grumpy if you have a difficult renter... Just don't rent to them. In the end the most control Belongs to the DVC Member.... Remember , we can bank our points and of course give them away to family....I'm sure they are willing to take them off our hands.

We're just happy to belong to DVC, it's all Goooooood !!!!!

This has been an interesting thread thankyou.

Hands up, I admit it, I'm wanting to rent because of the DDP. However this is just because it suits our circumstances best this way. We are currently staying at an offiste pool home for our first 14 nights and will be buying the 21 day tickets available to the UK market. We want to spend our last week onsite to get our fix of the magic, use the EMH's etc. We love eating at the world especially Epcot and are dying to try the plan, but as we already have tickets the whole MYW package doesn't work for us.

However I am not a bargain hunter. I am happy to pay $12 per point and i don't think it is unreasonable a figure to ask, and like some others have said i am planing well in advance (we don't go until Sept 2007) and i know exactly where we want to stay and how many points we need. Of course i have a back up if we cannot get what we want but i'm hopeful. I would never expect a renter to run around after me chasing up different dates, room types etc, as far as i can see that is my job to know exactly what I require, and the owner is doing me a favour letting me rent their points.

I do hope to become a member myself one day but are not yet in a position to buy, but who knows in a few years perhaps we will be the ones needing to rent points out.

Especially if the deal had gone bad and he were to send you something nasty on his company's letterhead.

As in retail; 20% of your renters will cause 80% of your problems. Let suckers walk.
