As a former WDW hotel food court employee we were specifically told not to ever question someone with an old/outdated mug we were told to always just let it go.
So if WDW doesn't really care then I don't see why everyone is getting so bent out of shape about it. I'm sure they are making copious amounts of money of the mugs and soda. If the profit margin was suffering they wouldn't offer the mugs or develop some kind of system in which this situation couldn't happen.
I personally think that if the mugs you have have the same design as the current mugs being sold then I would fill up without loosing sleep.
I do believe it's wrong however to fill up a thermos, big gulp, sea world cup that wasn't purchased from disney...
