i would love to see photo's taken at home of all those who stay split resorts during 1 stay

post your 6 identical mugs for a family of 4
8 for family of 4
10 for family of 5

etc.

or you could all just say you don't have to "prove it" just that we should all just believe your word for it.
Not sure what the purpose would be. Disney changed the wording on the mugs. It used to be something to the effect of 'good for the duration of the stay in which it was purchased, at the resort it was purchased at.' to 'good at the resort beverage stations for the duration of the stay in which it was purchased' or something similar. Many guests complained about having to buy two different mugs on each trip if they did a split stay...so wording got changed. Please don't make me go down two flights of stairs to get two different mugs so I can quote directly from them!!

Disney should go back to selling forever mugs. It would be the "green" thing to do. I'm surprised that a comapny like Disney doesnt encourage more recylcing etc....
They pretty much are good for life. No CMs really care about what mug you use, they don't come running over to stop you from refilling you POR mug at POP. It's only here that people get all in an uproar. I really think that if Disney had an issue with us reusing the darn things they would change the way CMs handled the issue.

Bottom line....if you want to abide, 100%, with what Disney had put in writing at the food courts, then buy a new mug each time you go to WDW. If it doesn't bother you to reuse your mug, then don't worry about it.

Yep... $30-$40 for a forever mug would be just fine for us as well... seems a waste to keep buying new mugs every trip when they are THE SAME in all details...

Or here is another thought... How about a new mug every year with the year on it that is GOOD until the next cup version comes out the next year?

On the mug issue, I boil it down to this: since the official rule is plainly stated that mugs can only be refilled during the length of stay, then that's the rule, and to do anything else is not right. I don't find it debatable. You can debate whether the rule is a good rule, a stupid rule, a fair rule, etc. but that doesn't change the rule.

I think that posters who take the position that it's OK to reuse mugs from previous trips are really saying, "I don't agree with the rule. It's a bad rule, a stupid rule, and in some circumstances a completely illogical rule. I can agree with that. There are truly instances when it isn't a fair or logical rule. I think most of us on both sides of this issue can agree with that.

The place where the "Reuse" and "Don't Reuse" camps diverge is that the "Don't Reuse" people stick to the rule whether it's logical and fair or not. The "Reuse" group justifies breaking the rule by pointing out all the times, conditions, and reasons when the rule doesn't seem fair.

My main problem with the "Reusers" is that they say reusing mugs is perfectly OK and acceptable based on their own opinions of what is fair and logical. It would be more honest with oneself simply to say, "What I'm doing is technically wrong, but I'm going to do it anyway, because the rule is stupid and I don't agree with it."

As other posters have pointed out, we all do things from time to time that aren't right, like exceeding the speed limit. I speed now and then, or do other things that are wrong. The difference is, I will freely admit that it's wrong and that I knowingly did it anyway! I don't try to come up with ten reasons and examples of why it should be OK to do something that's against the rules.

OK, so much for my lecture. I am not the mug police, and I do have a sense of humor . . . so much so that I wrote the following spoof which is included in a trip report I wrote a couple years ago:

And now we must pause this trip report with a Public Service Announcement from Our Sponsor: Disney.

A new policy is being implemented that will put an end to the refillable mug controversy. As of 04/01/07 Mugs will be sold with a mandatory return deposit fee. The new program will be called "The Unlimited Drink Program" rather than "refillable mugs," and the cost will be $11.99, with a return deposit of $3.99, payable when you return your mug for disposal at the end of your stay.

A spokeperson for Disney said: "Too many guests view the mug purchase as buying the mug, and getting the contents free, when actually, the guest is paying for refills for the length of stay, and the mug itself is a nominal portion of the cost. By instituting the return policy, the issue of reusing mugs is settled. If a guest does not find sufficient value in the $8.00 fee for the unlimited drinks, which is his cost after the mug deposit is returned to him, he need not purchase the "Unlimited Drink Program."

When asked about guests who wished to keep the mug as a souvenir, the spokesperson explained, "We have an option for guests who do not wish to return the mug at the end of their stay. Upon checkout, when a guest elects to keep the mug, a small microprocessor chip will be imbedded in the logo of the mug, so that if the guest returns for a future visit with the mug, Mug Alarm Sensors at the entrance of the resort and any food court location will sound, alerting staff to the presence of a pre-enjoyed mug. The guest will need to relinquish the mug immediately. All luggage arriving via Magical Express will be scanned for pre-enjoyed mugs. Our guest's Key to the World cards will not be operational until any contraband pre-enjoyed mugs have been submitted for disposal. We anticipate that this new program will be very well received.

We will also be instituting a pilot program at the same time called the "Unlimited Burger Box Program." Guests may buy a decorative syrofoam container for $29.99 containing a regular hamburger, or cheeseburger, and return the box for Unlimited Burger Refills during the length of their stay. The same return deposit fee of $3.99 will apply, but as the syrofoam box is less durable than a refillable mug, we do not anticipate the desire to keep the container, therefore the box will be vaporized upon check-out."

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

kay7979...while I tend to agree with you in theory, the problem is this...it isn't that some think the rule is stupid. It's that some of us feel like schmucks for buying a new one every time. I have close to 25 of the darned things..multiples from many resorts. So...when we get to our resort and see what others are doing...reusing those mugs from previous trips, or worse yet...using containers that aren't even Disney issue...well, it just irks.
It isn't that the rule is stupid...it's a good rule and it makes sense. The problem is that Disney made the rule, Disney posts the rule, but Disney does not enforce the rule. Their CMs turn a blind eye to the practice of mug re-use. If asked, they will actually tell you to go right ahead, reuse that mug as often as you want.
And that's the problem. It used to be okay with me to buy a new mug at each resort I stayed at. I loved bringing them home and using them for my morning coffee. But, when Disney went with a generic mug, and then didn't change the design for a few years, it just didn't make much sense to have 4, 5, or 6 of the exact same mug at home. So, I started bringing mine back.

However, now that there is a new mug design, I'll be buying new mugs in August. I like having each design. But I'll be darned if I buy new ones for my stay in Dec..unless they change the design again...which I doubt they'll do.

So now...I have 3 mugs from the Polynesian, 3 from BW, 2 from BC, 3 from DxL, 3 from POR, 3 from POP, 2 from Music, 1 from TL..not to mention the 4 generic YOMD's mugs. So, a total of 24 mugs...how many do three people really need??? I guess three more...have to get the newest design in a few months!!!

Maybe the best thing to do is make the mugs out of some kind of recyclable material which will not last much longer than 10 days (sorry to those who go longer, but they have to have a cutoff somewhere). Then you are not paying for a mug, because the mug is not going to be of any use after your stay, you are paying for refills. That would certainly stop the reusers.

Now again, I did reuse my mug on one split stay, 8 nights at Contemporary and 1 at All Star. I felt guilty and would not ever do that again. I have never and will never bring back used mugs from another trip. However, I think comparing it to things which are laws is a bit of a stretch. It is not a law it is a rule. Disney is not going to have you arrested or fined for reusing a mug. Does that make it right to break a rule? No, but all the same it is still not comparable to breaking a law in my opinion.

I think we're going to have to come to this conclusion:Those of us who re-use mugs are never going to convince the Dis morality mug police that it is okay and vice versa. We are going to have to agree to disagree about it.

I have a collection, too. I even buy ones from resorts I've never stayed at if I find them cheap at garage sales. Like you, I enjoy all the different designs. I wish they would continue to make resort specific mugs. But if you are being over-run with mugs, I suppose you can throw them away.

As noted in my mug spoof, I think Disney should rename the program "Unlimited Drinks" and focus on the fact that you are paying for the drinks, with the mug only a minor component of the price. The mugs are worth about $3.95 (yes, I know this is Disney and everything is ridiculously expensive) ;->.

It would be funny if they sold the refills in paper cups that were designed to disolve after a week! That way you'd base your purchase price on the fact that you were buying a week's worth of drinks, and if you weren't staying that long, or didn't think you'd get your money's worth in a week, you'd just pass. :rotfl:

I know people that buy a coffee (paper) cup and reuse it all week!:scared1:

I think that's even crazier than the refillable mugs.. it's so funny because ya gotta see them trying to keep their little paper cups in tact and not ruined! too much effort for me! :goodvibes

Nicely said. :thumbsup2

I saw few folks on my trip in May to POFQ that were using 07 and 08 mugs and some mugs I never even seen before. I could really care less, I am there on vacation and not to worry about what people are using to get drinks. If it doesn't bother Disney then it doesn't bother me.

I don't support either side.If you want to re-use your mug, re-use it, if you don't just buy another on the next trip. Simple enough. I just can't get over the # of threads and posts that have been consumed by this topic. :sad2:

:thumbsup2 I will, until told otherwise, continue to reuse my mugs from previous visits.

It just seems to me that there are a lot of us who fall into the category of owning the "forever" mugs. I have 2 such mugs purchased at 2 different resorts.

Since I purchased them at a time when the rule for that mug was that I could bring it back to that resort forever, I don't see why I should be made to feel guilty. Certainly if I purchased a mug under the new rules, I would follow the rules at the time of purchase.

However, I feel that I purchased my mugs many years ago under certain pretenses, and I will continue to follow those rules.

I look at it this way. If I purchase a "lifetime" subscription to say XM Radio, then I never have to pay again. Now if they do away with the lifetime subscriptions, and now only offer a monthly plan (at the same cost I already paid), that's just bad luck for the new subscribers. At no point, however, should I have to start paying again for what the original contract was.

I guess I just get tired of people generalizing all "mug re-users" under some shady group, when there are a lot of us following the rules for the mug we purchased a long time ago.

These "forever" mugs continue to confuse me. I've heard about Dixie Landing mugs being "forever", but since Dixie Landing doesn't exist anymore, the "forever-ness" has ceased to exist. What other mugs were sold as "forever"? I first bought a mug in 1997 at the Polynesian and there were signs over the mugs telling me about the usage rules and it wasn't "forever".

What about guests who have mugs from the resorts which are still open and these mugs would not have the current rules written on signs like you mentioned seeing at the Polynesian. Also and this is just my families experience but when we stayed at the Contemporary in May 1998 and all the years until the mug rules changed, we never saw the sign that you saw at the Polynesian and the rules were not written on the mugs. Plus this is when the Cast Members were telling guests they could be brought back on your next stay at that specific resort.

Also I have some friends who live in Orlando and when they attend at the event called Mickey's Pin Trading Night at the Contemporary they bring their old silver ones if they want to get drinks. So I don't see them spending $12.99 each time on a new mug and I doubt they would want to see since they now live in Orlando.

So because they live in Orlando they think they are entitled to free soda for life? That is a bit of a stretch. They could just by a single soda as they are thirsty, which is what they should be doing.
