Rainforest Cafe OUTRAGE!

So... They don't make enough money from the DP so you can get a iconic dessert?

I've read on these boards many times about people paying OOP for something when on the DDP so this doesn't seem like the norm. Maybe the server was just misinformed and didn't know you could order something separate from the DDP and pay OOP.

- On DDP you can not order it with two people. True.

- Paying OOP is an option for anyone, even one person, if they wish whether on the DDP or not. I DO IT ALL THE TIME because my DS loves the Volcano! And no we can't finish it.

- SO you are on the DDP, were they going to stop you from ordering beer, wine, cocktail, appetizer .... all not on the DDP. I think not.

- Sounds like some serious miscommunication. I would have told them "fine, close out my bill" and when he brings it to you to sign .... say "Oh we decided to order dessert, we will just pay cash for that. Thank you. (insert smirk)"

Yes we were on the dining plan, BUT I did ask if we could just pay separately with cash and he still said there was nothing he could do. I've never heard of any restaurant in America having a policy like this. If I want an item you are offering to customers, how dare you tell me I can't have it based on the idea that two people shouldn't be able to eat that much food. Seriously pissed and I'm emailing the place later today.
You said this to the manager?

The only reason I ask is that I could see a new server not knowing how to handle a problem like this, but I am sure the manager sees it all of the time.

I would've asked to speak to the manager. The server was either misinformed or confused. Maybe he/she was thinking that the person wanted to just pay the difference, and not the full price of the volcano. Either way, it would've been cleared up easily by speaking to the manager.

have to wonder if it was something weird with the register and the dining plan being in conflict with the dessert order? I don't think we will ever figure out exactly what went wrong there

I hope you had a better dessert somewhere along the line OP

So the server specifically said you couldn't order it because it was for 2 people? What did the manager say when you spoke to him?
It is not a Rainforest Cafe policy to have that restriction, and it's very common for 2 people to order that specific desert- this is why I'm curious what "company policy" they told you existed.

Except it isn't Disney it's a third party company, Landry's. Landry's simply contracts to get paid via the DDP. It's Landry's policies that count, not Disney's.
But it isn't Landry's policy. I've been going to Rainforest Cafe for several years, and we always order that desert. There was a miscommunication somewhere. I just don't want people reading this to think they must have 3 people to order it.

DH & I had a similar experience this past Dec. We were on the DDP and we were told the same thing. Our server got the okay from the manager for us to order the Volcano using our DDP credits. I guess it depends on who is managing at the time. Sorry this happened to you.

They wouldn't let you pay out of pocket? This is disappointing. But not bc of the number of people right? What was the reason they gave? Are you not allowed to order alcohol there if on the DDP?

Not when the dessert is for a party of 3 or more and the OP only had 2. I don't know if they would let your order it anyway, just like you can't order a large pizza at Via Napoli and split it.

I order it all the time for two of us .... often with nothing other than glasses of water.

You can't use just two DDP credits to get it, there must be at least 3 but you can order it and pay OOP for it.

Landry has no rules on how much or how little you order.

This was a mishandled situation all around.

Exactly. I've never heard or experienced any restaurant who said you couldn't order something larger than your party. I definitely know that Rainforest Cafe is not one of them. I think we started ordering the Volcano when my kid was 3. Me and a 3 year old. We barely put a dent in it anytime we eat there.lol. But never once have I had a server question me when I ordered it.

But in this situation, the server was correct because of how the guests were paying their bill. The DDP will not cover a Volcano with only two credits.

Now if I were a server, I would have told them to pick two desserts the DDP covered that were portable and we could package them to go. Then order your Volcano and pay out of pocket. You will get two bills, and two desserts to go and I, the server, would get a bigger tip. No need at all to involve the manager. The situation is black and white, but workable.

I meant as they were on the dining plan. That they wouldn't be allowed to use credits for it. It was more clear in my mind then when I typed it.

Got ya now. Also guilty of my fingers not conveying my thoughts at times.
