Racist,ignorant, or misunderstood? O'Reilly remarks

This is another one of those threads that I read and just go  .

It's really a sad commentary on "white" society that there seems to be a sizeable group of folks who Learned Something About Black People by listening to Bill O'Reilly's revelation about the civilized behavior he saw at Sylvia's.

Where's he going next to educate the Fox Audience? An Indian Place? Maybe the Barrio? Maybe he should try some of the places in Detroit where the Muslim population is high? Is this going to be Bill's Enlightenment Tour where he finds out that people of other races are not different from white people???

Or maybe Bill ought to go to an Italian resturant and find out that The Sopranos is really work of fiction? ;)

Although, you maybe on to something with "Bill's Enlightenment Tour". Doesn't Geraldo work for Fox? I'm sure he and Bill can host a few expose shows.

Three points:

1) This whole discussion really boggles the mind

2) Bill knows his target audience.

3) You really can't make this stuff up

Lots of people have good and meaningful conversations about race in this country everyday.

However, when people make idiotic statements such as it's surprising that black folks can act civilized in restaurants, or that thug culture dominates African American society, people are going to point out how insulting and ignorant those statements are.

Yup.

#2 Is a sad coment. I am hoping beyond all hope that his target audience knows better than to think that the stereotypical thug culture is the dominent one for black americans. I am hoping he is one of the few that is "amazed" by the civilized behavior.

I would LOVE to hope that but from some of the responses here by those who watch him...

::yes::

Who is worse? The person who make the racist comments? Or the people who defend and support them?

You know, that is precisely the thing that has disturbed me the most. I expect that kind of thing from O'Reilly and others like him, because they gets paid to say controversial things-whether they personally believe them or not. I really think a lot of these people on both sides say things just to get people riled up and get ratings. However, the people who defend the stuff?? That's a whole 'nother thing....

Sadly, the point seems to have gone completely over your head again.

So I guess your not going to listen to the entire Segment. If you can get me to a unbiased site to review the 100's of Lies. Media Matters doesn't count do to it's bias. Please do so. How many of those 100's of lies are for something that was not asked during an interview. I see that Media Matters likes to point that out too. Are you including those in your lies. Have you gone back and reviewed the over 750 Articles that Media Matters has on O'Rielly I am not defending him becuase I believe there is nothing to defend, As the OP asked what, Racist, Ignorant or Misunderstood. I keep saying missunderstood.

The big loser here is Media Matters. This thing has managed to grow a life of its own, and now I see on a lot of local stations and press that are starting to See O'Riellys point of view of the missunderstanding. I watched last Night with Jessie Jackson and he seemed to except O'Rielly's explanation also. I am waiting to see Al Sharpton's final Opinion also.

So I guess that you have the court papers to prove this Statement from you " given his established background as an adulterer who has been sued for sexual harassment". I thought the case was settled. Being Sued for something or settling doesn't mean your Guilty. Does it now. Throwing this up, is like what media matters does. By the way I didn't know that all forms of Sexual Haressment could be defined as having Sexual Relations outside of the Marriage. Wow, Now I know not to pay attention to anything you say for now on as you are so slighted to the left you are willing to throw up anything to get some traction.

Oh, and by the way to another frequent poster on this thread trying to hang out O'Rielly. They were not viewers, O'Riellys comments were on the Radio Factor, Not on his TV Show. I believe the correct term would be listeners. Amazing to be out there condeming him and not even knowing the venue that it happened on.

I didn't read the whole thread. I'm also not a fan or O'Reilly and I'm not racist in any way.

What I'm curious about is, did anyone listen to the WHOLE interview? I heard the whole thing yesterday, along with his reponse to the media, and it sounds like he was misunderstood. His argument was that racism is stupid and happens because of fear. His agument about the blacks 'behaving' in a restaurant was along the lines of a sarcastic, 'hey, guess what? They act like every other race acts in restaurants, get over it.' I can see how SEGMENTS of the interview could be taken out of context if you didn't hear the WHOLE thing. Again, I'm not a fan of his, nor do I care what color/race/religion anyone is.

OK, let's try this again. Media Matters is biased in their CHOICE of targets. Once you get past the choice, they use fact based websites to debunk the things said by these Conservative TV and Radio hosts.

I still wonder why there is no Media Matters type site going after Liberal radio and TV hosts like Randi Rhodes, Allan Colmes and Keith Olberman. Could it be that they can't find enough lies to debunk? :confused3

Well that would depend if the people "defending" the statements truly believe the comments are racist. I am not actually "defending" O'Reilly. I'm just stating that in *my* opinion that I don't believe his comments were racist.

But feel free to label me worse than someone who actually makes racist comments.

Oh no! Now you *will* be labeled a racist because you dared to put his WHOLE interview in the proper context! :rotfl2:

I have listened to the whole thing and there is just no way around what he said. There is no OTHER translation or interpretation. He said it and it was unbelievably stupid AND offensive. There is just no spin to this. O'Reilly should have apologized (as Imus did) as soon as he said it. I had been a regular Ismus listener, but was openly outraged and critical of his hurtful comments about the Rutgers' women. If there is a large group of O'Reilly's regular listeners who honestly do not understand how this was a hurtful and insensitive comment, then as others have said, it really does not say much for a lot of folks in this country.

In your opinion that is...

Well said.

And like Imus, it's actually just the most recent statment vs. the only statement of it's kind. As somebody posted earlier, both guys know their audience well and knows what they want to hear and will accept.
