Racist,ignorant, or misunderstood? O'Reilly remarks

Do O'Reilly's viewers really think that all blacks act like gangsters???

When did O'Reilly figure out that they don't?

No, but many believe the ‘rap culture’ that dominates many black communities promotes gangs, drugs and violence.

So I should be HAPPY about his comments??

Cool.

One quick question.

When will he start to help young white females?

I know tons of black people that do not interact with white people on a daily basis. The only knowledge they have of white people is what they see in the media.

As you know, there are a few young ladies that have been in the news a bit lately. (Hilton, Lohan, Spears) Based on what we've seen, many of us have come to the conclusion that ALL young white women lack morals and self respect. They also seem to have a total disregard for the law. Oh, and based on what we've read and seen on the news, they lack maternal insticnt.:confused3

Maybe when Mr. O'Reilly pulls his foot out of his mouth, he'll have time to start helping young white females.

Or how about having Jesse Jackson put out the word. Yeah, that's it.

O'Reilly and Jackson can go out to lunch. When the meals over, Jackson can report back to us.

I wonder if you'd find Jackson's "discoveries" insulting or helpful.

(For the record I don't know ANYONE that believes the garbage I just wrote)

He just figured it out on September 19.:thumbsup2

“Happy” is not the right word. What I think O’Reilly is against (as are many blacks (such as Al Sharpton)) is ‘thug culture’ that is seen as a result from rap music and prevalent in many black communities. I know I can go to the mall and see many black teenagers walking around with ‘gang-type clothing’ that O’Reilly and Sharpton believe promote gangs, drugs and violence. They believe this rap/gang culture is portraying the African American community negatively, and that it brings down the community as a whole (higher crime, etc).

And don’t even get me started on ‘celebrities’. I think they’re complete trash.

Imagine Rev Al going to a "white" Restaurant then going on his radio show and saying.."Wow they arent all blond, and they werent playing Brittney Spears music in the background, no one was drinking beer from a can, belching and opening the top button of their pants after dinner"

Whould you say Rev Al is trying to HELP white Americans by dismissing the stereotype that all whites act like trash ?

No, it would be more like Rev Al going to a white restaurant in rural Alabama, communicating and interacting with whites, and then going back to communities like Harlem (or other black communities that may have little interaction with whites) and saying “you know, they’re not all racist rednecks who drink beer and watch Nascar all day. They act just like everyone else”.

As much as the Reverend irritates me a lot of the time, I'm fairly confident he knows better than to buy into such a stereotype. Shame that O'Reilly doesn't.
I believe he was making a point not to himself but to others in the way as a monologue. He was not voicing his beliefs but the belifs of others...what they think it would be like in a Black restaurant.
You think this is a man not giving his own beliefs, but the beliefs of others?

You know, I was up in Harlem a few weeks ago, and I actually had dinner with Al Sharpton, who is a very, very interesting guy. And he comes on The Factor a lot, and then I treated him to dinner, because he's made himself available to us, and I felt that I wanted to take him up there. And we went to Sylvia's, a very famous restaurant in Harlem. Ihad a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful. They all watch The Factor. You know, when Sharpton and I walked in, it was like a big commotion and everything, but everybody was very nice.

And I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship.

Who was up in Harlem?

Who had dinner with Sharpton?

Who had a great time?

Who walked into the restaurant?

And, finally, who couldn't get over the fact ath there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City?

To those that are on this board that find it so easy to say people that like o'rielly should not be trusted, that we must be racist also, that we have no brain...
Um, nobody on the board has said that, have they?

If O'Reilly's viewers don't believe that all black people act like gangsters, then how could O'Reilly, as you said, have been "trying to help black Americans by dismissing the stereotype that all blacks act like ‘gangsters’"

If that's not a stereotype that this his viewers believe, what was O'Reilly doing trying to dismiss it?

No, he wants the 'thug culture' to stop dominating African American society.

He wants to see a lot less stories like this:

<<Blacks made up 41 percent of the nation's 2 million prison and jail inmates in 2006. Non-Hispanic whites made up 37 percent and Hispanics made up 19 percent.>>

Note - you might not believe this (just as O'Reilly had a hard time believing that black people can be civilized in a restaurant) but the vast majority of African American society is pretty darn decent and not dominated by thug culture.

Jessee Jackson is on the factor tonight!

Not a fan of either of them, but darn, it makes good TV to watch them both make each other squirm! :happytv:

I've been a part of the African American society for almost 40 years now.

Thug culture does not dominate our society.

You guys just don't get it, do you? He was trying to explain that the stereotypes (watched TV lately?) are not all true! By trying to help black Americans, he is seen as racist. Unbelievable.

What's unbelievable is that you could type that with a straight face.

Oh those poor black folk...if only they had someone who could bring their truth to White America! If only they had a savior to help them.

Alas, black America is only represented by obscure people like Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Barrack Obama, Colin Powell, Alvin Ailey, Sidney Poitier, Maya Angelou, Denzel Washington, Hank Aaron, Khareem Abdul Jabbar, James Baldwin, Condoleeza Rice, Carol Mosley-Braun, Dorothy Dandridge, Nat King Cole, Marian Wright Edelman, Zora Neale Hurston, Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones, Evander Holyfield, Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King Jr, Mae Jemison, Thurgood Marshall, Paul Robeson, Satchel Paige, Charlie Parker, Jackie Robinson, Clarence Thomas, and James Van Der Zee (and a few thousand other names I can't think of off the top of my head).

Obviously the little-known accomplishments of these barely-heard-of people are not enough to convince anyone that black culture does not consist solely of drugs, gangs, and rap music.

THANK GOD Bill O'Reilly came along to do something about this grave injustice.

**Now that's how you do sarcasm.

I assume the people you mentioned didn't get their thug memo

You left off Cuba Gooding Jr.;) He has got to be my favorite actor in the whole world! I love watching Snow Dogs with my kids.....:cloud9:

Thug culture does not dominate our society.

That may be true, but you cannot deny that ‘thug culture’ does dominate a portion of the population that is far too large. The crime rates are not theories or my own personal opinions; they’re facts- the black American crime rate is much higher than the rate for whites, Asians, and Hispanics. Bill O’Reilly and Al Sharpton (and I agree with them) see this as a result from a predominantly black ‘rap culture’ that in many cases promotes gangs, drugs and violence. Seriously, go to many inner cities and you’ll see it for yourself. Heck, go to the local mall. Disneyjunkie, I would think you, being a black American, would be interested in curbing violence and crime in the African American community? The way to do that is to stop advertising drug use, female abuse and gangs that so many rap artists are promoting!

What's unbelievable is that you could type that with a straight face.

And I’ll bet you all those famous, successful black entertainers, businessmen/women and athletes would agree with me that “thug culture” needs to be frowned upon in their communities. In fact, I know they agree with that because I’ve heard them speak about it. They want emphasis on education and hard work. They want their kids to study hard in school, excel at sports and go to college- just like anyone else would. They don’t want to see teenage members of their community going to the mall dressed like gang members.

I'll tell you one thing, Bill O'Reilly was sure right when he said you can't have any discussion about race in this country.

And the way to achieve that is to have a middle-aged white guy sanctimoniously proclaim that - to his surprise - black people are capable of dressing well and behaving politely in public?

Kids, study hard and stay in school, and maybe one day Bill O'Reilly will say that you aren't nearly as thuggish as he expected you to be! There's a goal.

I'll tell you one thing, Bill O'Reilly was sure right when he said you can't have any discussion about race in this country.

What B O'R has is not discussion. It's contempt and condescension.

:worship: Great post!!!!

He does - theyre friends.

Guess what!? He *does*!!! Yeah - can you believe it? He, in addition to his distaste for the holier then thou thoughts some young people have about Rap artists - he ALSO goes into tyrades about young, white females, ala Britney, Lindsay & Paris - CON-STANT-LY!!!

The way he feels rap artists are not 'normal' nor to be looked up to - he actually feels the same about the foo-foo hollywood girls too. Its about our youth and what theyre seeing as 'role models' - it isnt healthy, it isnt good, it isnt morally correct.

Watch the show.

Disneyjunkie, I would think you, being a black American, would be interested in curbing violence and crime in the African American community? The way to do that is to stop advertising drug use, female abuse and gangs that so many rap artists are promoting!

Who isn't interested in doing this? I just happen to know that the issue is bigger than just a genre of music. Get rid of rap and the problem will still be there.

I don't believe for a minute that the O'Reilly's of the world care one bit about what happens in the black community.

I will go back an review the Media Matters and Then look For another transcript from the show. I guess if you can't remember everything you say You are a Liar. Now have you reviewed the entire episode of the Radio Factor in question with regards to the Discussion with Juan Williams, or are you still letting media matters do your editing for you. Let me know and when ready I will post my answer. But since you Crack about Fox News, I am sure you will let MediaMatters do your Liberal Thinking for You.

If it was only one specific instance where he lied, your hypothesis that he merely couldn't remember might contain some validity. But when you are done researching that specific instance, I have hundreds more ready for you to dwelve into with that open mind of yours.

Which brings us to a (at the moment) hypothetical question; if you were to take the time to do all the independent research you want and discover that he has indeed engaged in outright lies, falsehoods and deliberate misrepresentations hundreds of times on his media outlets, given his established background as an adulterer who has been sued for sexual harassment, would you still support and continue to be an apologist for him or would you be willing to concede that perhaps you were wrong about him? And if you still support him knowing what you then know, why would you?

Your answer will be most illuminating, especially in light of your earlier request in this thread to expand upon my comment of "it speakes volumes about his audience".

Color me crazy, but those 3 examples you used point to ignorance, homophobia, xenophobia, and just plain stupidity. If someone wants to cop to all those, be my guest. ;)

Btw, is the latest spin O'Reilly was trying to educate people? Please, you're killing me. :lmao:

This is another one of those threads that I read and just go  .

It's really a sad commentary on "white" society that there seems to be a sizeable group of folks who Learned Something About Black People by listening to Bill O'Reilly's revelation about the civilized behavior he saw at Sylvia's.

Where's he going next to educate the Fox Audience? An Indian Place? Maybe the Barrio? Maybe he should try some of the places in Detroit where the Muslim population is high? Is this going to be Bill's Enlightenment Tour where he finds out that people of other races are not different from white people???

I'll tell you one thing, Bill O'Reilly was sure right when he said you can't have any discussion about race in this country.
Lots of people have good and meaningful conversations about race in this country everyday.

However, when people make idiotic statements such as it's surprising that black folks can act civilized in restaurants, or that thug culture dominates African American society, people are going to point out how insulting and ignorant those statements are.

I had to see this one again.

So now Bill O'Reilly is performing a public service by informing us that not all blacks are foul-mouthed, rude thugs. Hey, thanks for telling us, Bill. And thank you for pointing it out. :thumbsup2

You can't make this stuff up.

The "24%-29%" ........ Cherish them.
