1. Should I drive my car to The Grand Floridian for a character dining, or take the bus? We are going during Spring Break, and the buses will be crowded, I'm sure, so are there any advantages to one or the other?

2. This will be our "free day". How does the pool hopping work? After our character dining, can we "hop" over to the Grand Floridian pool while we're there? Do you have to show your Key to the World card?

1. don't know this one

2. Your kidding right :goodvibes There is no such thing as pool hopping and creates some of the most heated augments on these boards. The GF pool is only GF guests. Some times PH is allowed but only if your "home" pool is under refurb.

We have always only used Disney transportation for getting to meals. If you are going for breakfast, the buses start running early enough, give yourself a few extra minutes though becuase they don't run as often that early in the morning. The early am buses aren't very crowded at all.

There is no pool hopping. You are only allowed to use the pool at the resort you are staying at.

If it were my free day, I'd totally drive my car. That way, you can make the most of your time and go drive to... whereever! I'd love to go look at the different resort lobbies (as I've only stayed at CBR and GF) maybe go to DTD and shop, people-watch, even Sea World if I'm feeling froggy.

Well, in all fairness, there IS such a thing as pool hopping. It is a perk for Disney Vacation Club members. It is subject to some restrictions (no hopping to the pools at YC/BC/BCV or AKL/AKV or BLT) and some blackout dates.

Pool hopping is ignored by Disney in 95% of cases, anyone caught would be unlucky but not in the world of Dis where it never happens lol. The GF pool has a lovely location but is not that good a pool.

Drive your car. They will give you a parking pass good for 3 or 4 hours. The GF is a monorail resort. We did this when doing breakfast at Chef Mickeys.....hopped on the monorail and took a ride over to the MK (not going into the MK) then took a boat over to the Polynesian and spent a little time just looking around the resort and shopping in the gift shop. Then we hopped back on the monorail back to the Contemporary to retrieve our car. Was a nice little lazy day outing (our breakfast was late morning so the monorail and boats were not crowded at all)......it was very relaxing.

This sounds like a good idea for a "lazy day". How does all the resort hopping work? Is it clearly labeled which monorail you're supposed to catch to get to where you're going? Sounds confusing to me.

I've never done any resort hopping either, so trying to get good ideas for a lazy day!

Thanks!

As you are going up the monorail, there will be 2 ramps that you can go up....one that will be express monorail that will take you directly to the TTC and back to MK, or the Resort Monorail. This is the one you will want to take if you want to get on and off at the different resorts. It is very easy, no confusion about it. As for resort hopping, we love to do this. We love to take one day off and go to all the different resorts to look around, shop, and eat. We love to get the different resort pins for our pin collection at home, and I will only buy them at the resorts not at a pin trading shop....it is more fun this way. Have fun on your lazy day.

Yes, maybe I was a little quick on the draw.

To the OP sorry if my response seemed a bit harsh. It seemed like someone who has been on these boards since 2007 should have seen at least one pool hopping thread go very bad.:goodvibes

Its up there with reusing refillable mugs.

I have usually skipped such threads considering I've never stayed onsite. That's why I'm not up to speed on all the resort & pool hopping! :)

Trying to get as much info as possible so I can decide whether to stay on or off site. Am booked for off site, but considering changing to on site.

Something to think about is that buses don't go from resort to resort, so you'd have to go to a park first and then get on the bus to the GF. (Or from the MK you could take the boat or monorail.) It would be easier to just drive if it's your free day and you aren't going to a park.

Another thought: Since the buses don't run from resort to resort, could I park my car at Downtown Disney, take bus to GF, then use the monorail for resort hopping?

You can but you have just started another thread that gets a lot of "attention", parking at DTD and taking Disney transportation to other places.

You could, but those buses seem to take forever, so I wouldn't recommend it. I'd drive to the GF. You can park there for your meal and then take the monorail to the CR and Poly, ending up back at the GF, then drive back to your resort...much easier!

Yeah, that seems easier. I'm just wondering about the time limit they give you to park your car there, if it'll give us enough time to do the resort hopping.

To the OP, just be aware that whether you are an on-site or off-site guest and you don't valet park, you will most likely get a 3 hour parking pass at the GF.

If you do stay on site you can park for free at the TTC and take the Monorail from there.

Except that the parking at CR and the parking at GF are two totally different beasts. AND if you leave your car beyond the three hours, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

The self-parking at GF is not remotely convenient to the resort. It's not at ALL like the parking at CR, which is closer to the park than the CR itself. There's also no way to walk from MK to the GF parking lot. It's one of the downsides of GF. Depending on where you park, and how long it takes to get a crossing signal at the traffic light, it can eaily take a good ten minutes to walk from the lot to the front door of GF.

If however, you are staying at WL, most buses are shared between resorts - double check with your bus driver before you board - but just about any park bus will take you directly to GF. (I think there's a few dedicated buses during peak hours that only stop at one resort.) From WL, your best bet for getting TO GF quickly by far would be to take the bus! (going directly back to your WL after eating though would have to involve going to a park first, probably MK would be fastest.)

It also depends slightly where you are eating at GF. I'm guessing you mean 1900PF, since the only other character meal there is the Princess Tea Party. Your restaurant is located onthe first floor near the front door.

If your home resort is on the monorail line, then you'd take that. Otherwise, you'll probably need to take your resort bus to MK first. From the MK bus depot, you'd have two options for getting to GF - the resort monorail (GF will be the fourth stop) or taking the boat. Since the boat goes directly to GF, it's probably your best option.

So that said, driving may still be the fastest option - depending on what you decide to do after the meal. Driving around WDW can be a bit confusing though, so it kind of depends where you interests lie. As long as MK is open, taking DIsney transport may be the more relaxig option. After MK closes however, driving is the far better option.
