I would have posted this on the DVC thread but all the warnings about what not to post were so intimidating I was scared to.

We've been thinking of staying at BC for a short trip for the f/w festival. I klnow people sometimes rent points there and my question is, why? I compared what it would cost to rent points (using the points calculator) with what it would cost me to just reserve the same thing through WDW reservations and the price was the same either way. So what's the advantage to renting points?

If you rent points for a stay that does not include Friday or Saturday night then renting points can save you quite a bit of money. I have rented a studio twice now and have loved it.

DVC 'costs' more points for the weekends, so if your trip spans a weekend or two it will 'cost' more. For us, it is still less expensive to rent points than it is to stay at a moderate sometimes. It all depends on individual circumstances and what you're looking for.

We happen to be renting for a stay in October and it is a great deal, price-wise, for us for that particular trip.

If it truly costs the same there is no advantage. As a matter of fact, if the price is the same it is a disadvantage - no housekeeping, no cancellations and with the popularity of the Food & Wine Fest, possibly no room anyway!

Actually, depending on the time of year you're going and the size of the unit you need...it could be a lot cheaper to rent points from a DVC member vs. booking a regular room. I'm not sure what the points are during your time frame.

Most members will rent to you for $10 a point. Some a little more, some a little less. It's a personal thing between you and the owner. For instance, if you only needed a studio (which is the case with us) and you wanted to go during the week (Sun-Thursday) and it was value season...you could get OKW for 8 points a night or BCV for I think 10 or 12 points. Not exactly sure which. So, even at 12 points a night x $10 that's $120 a night. Can't hardly get a moderate resort for that. Weekends, like everyone has said - are much more expensive.

If you need a bigger unit, I'm sure it's more. But I've never looked into it because it's just me and my DH.

We've rented points for a 2 bedroom villa at OKW in October. It 'costs' 24 points Sun-Thu nights, and 56 points Fri-Sat nights. At $10/pt that would be $240 and $560. There are 7 of us, so even at a Deluxe we'd need two rooms. Two standard rooms at WL, the least expensive Deluxe, would be $555/night for that time frame. Renting the same 2 bedroom OKW villa from Disney would be $657/night. Actually, two rooms at POR would be $345/night. No matter how you look at it renting was the way to go for us. Instead of two hotel rooms for more money, we're paying less and getting two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen and living area. You can't beat that, IMO! :sunny:

If you really want to stay at BC during F/W festival and rent from a member this is something you should really plan 11 months out. This is a very popular time for DVC members and those book up quickly.

And I would honestly expect to pay 11-12 per point for these locations as they are popular for F/W festival.

DVC works differently for their booking. An owner can book 11 months out at their home resort and 7 at any resort. So planning and planning early is key.

The calculator said I would need 120 points for two nights for a two bedroom. It would cost me 1200 to just book it through Disney. Since I live in FL and go to WDW a lot almost all my trips are long weekends. I doubt I'd ever be getting midweek so it probably won't ever be feasable to rent points.

So don't rent points.

I won't but since I had no idea how it worked I was wondering if I was missing something.

And replies like this one just confirm that this part of the forum is not overly friendly.

You are absolutely right with that scenario. Renting if you only go weekends makes no sense at all. Actually that is a deliberate situation. The word is that the reason Disney made the point cost so high on weekends is to discourage locals from filling the place up for just weekend stays which would essentially block out people who would be trying to book a 7 night vacation. If you stay during the weeknights it's a real deal. We tend to come for a week's vacation and just pretty much look at the point cost for the week. Pro rated out that way, it still makes great sense.
