I am not really sure how I want to post this question and I hope it's not taken wrong by anyone here as it is deffinatly not intended to upset anyone, that being said here goes:
I am a Lead at a Disney Store, I have OPEN Availability meaning any hours any day, I have allways changed shifts when asked and changed my personal schedule when asked to work a different shift than I had originally been scheduled, I don't ask for alot of days off (I didn't even do that before I got the Lead Position) anyway when this weeks schedule was posted my hours had been cut in HALF, for the past 3 or 4 weeks I had had 40 hours now this week I am down to 24. I am just wondering if anyone else would be upset by this if it were them???? It just kind of seems that in the Lead position you are in a VERY GREY area of employment if you know what I mean. You are not FULL TIME, but are you really PART TIME?? You don't get benefits, you don't get a bigger discount, or a better pass to the parks, but the expectaions of you are a bit more than a regular Part Timer......Please don't get me wrong I LOVE MY JOB, I think that is why I am a bit upset about the whole hour change thing. The assistant manager who is doing our schedule now is all worried about giving hours to certain CM's who constantly call off, request days off all the time and come in LATE allmost every shift they work. So I guess I am wondering.....if you were in my possition would you ask about this???? Or would you just accept this? There are people at our store who were hired as Shipment durring Christmas who have only 1 hour less than I do this week. Before they started WE did shipment and certainly NEVER got "46" hours a week to do it. Yeah if two of them are scheduled for 23 hour a piece that is "46" hours for shipment and filling. Well don't we all FILL if we work a closing shift?????
I dunno I guess maybe I am taking this whole thing a little personal, but at this point I am feeling a bit "used" for lack of a better word, so I am looking for imput from some of you to see what you think of it. Should I start asking for days to do things I want to do? I am putting in today for time to go on the Disney Cruise that I booked but am wondering if I am going to have trouble with that after the posts here about new BLOCKED dates as my Cruise is September 14-21. If you have any words of wisdome I would love to hear them, thanks in advance and I hope I didn't sound too whinny about this I am just looking for other oppinions.

It sounds to me like it's time to have a heart to heart with your SM. Is the ASM who is doing the schedule new? When you accepted the lead position was there any discussion on how many hours you would be getting?

Belle, I really don't have any words of wisdom, but I hope that things do work out for you. Here is some pixie dust to get you through.*************************************
And no, you didn't sound whiney...just concerned, as I think any of us would be. I hope that everything works out for your vacation. The middle of September is usually slow, so who would have ever thought that they would black out those dates? Good luck to you:)

belle,

when i was a lead there was a rule that you couldn't get over so many hours or they have to pay you benefits. so fyi that maybe why you see a cut.

The last I have heard in my store is that full time lead has been done away with. We had a great full time lead and she is now part time. I guess not every one has heard. In fact there was an answer to a thread that I can"t recall from where that people are applying for part time lead. TDS by hiring two part time leads instead of one full time lead can save on benefits. Vacations etc.

I tried posting yesterday, but wouldn't work. Let's see if I have better luck today! ;)
First of all, Belle, yes the Lead position is an odd place to be. You are Part Time Hourly
Management.... which means, just about all the same responsibilities of management
without the pay or benefits. It can be a fun job, but also extremely demanding.
Yes, FT Leads were done away with last summer. I had been FT for just over a year.
Once I went to PT, I still found myself working FT hours most weeks..... but without
the benefits.
As a PT Lead, they can schedule you FT hours some of the time, but not always.
Some weeks will have to be under 30 hrs. I'm thinking you have to fall under 1,500
or so hr/yr, or you'd have to be classified FT. Right now, it also seems that they are
watching hours more closely again, so I'd assume your managers don't have as many
hours to work with. After I went back to PT last summer, I realized that it just
wasn't worth it to me to be available 24/7 and put up with all the grief..... and not
get any bennies. Sooooo, I made the decision to step down in Oct. After almost
9 yrs, it's sure nice to be only doing early morning shipments and floor moves!
Of course, I am starting to look for a regular job now that will give me a decent
wage and a few benefits.... and where I don't have to sign my life over to them!
Nine yrs in retail has worn me down!!! It's a good "business decision" for me... and
time for a change!
Best of luck to you Belle! Lead's have one of the toughest positions out there!

It seems that the best thing that you could do is go to your SM and talk to her/him. There may be a good explanation. I am an ASM and would always want someone to come to me. I would feel awful if someone was unhappy and would not come to me and let me know. Sometimes we are so busy - so much to do, that we miss other things that we really should not. We are always avaliable to our castmembers. We believe in taking care of our people - we are a team.
