I remember Father Quigley in college saying "I know Jesus is really, really, really touched by you giving up gum for lent, but just maybe He'd be even happier if you went out and DID something good in the world as well." 
My great Aunt was a nun, and she and another nun (they traveled in pairs) got to go home for my Aunt's wedding in the late 60s. The rehearsal dinner was on a Friday night during Lent, and they were given dispensation to eat what they pleased. The other nun still thought they should order fish, but my great Aunt said she had the dispensation and she was going for the Prime Rib!
