Question about daycare worker employee discipline

I just found out this morning that the daycare worker has been fired for more of the same behavior on her part. I don't know all the details yet but it must be good.

YAY!

I'm betting the "details" you're talking about are not very good, and IMHO the daycare staff shouldn't be sharing them with parents. I'm willing to bet that the parent rumor mill will be churning on high speed though!

No the worker should not have done what she did.
And yes you should have brought it to the directors attention, but I will say you should not have discussed the incident with other staff.
The staff did not need to know who brought it to the directors attention. Now they will label you as "that parent". Talk to the person in charge when something happens, not other staff.

I spoke to the worker who heard the incident I witnessed. I asked her the next day if she heard what I heard and she confirmed she did and that her and the other girls were upset about it and would be going to the director as well.

As far as other information I get, I get it offsite from somebody that works at the center. There is no parent rumour mill on the infant side as none of us know each other and speak to each other as our kids are too little.

If I see something inappropriate I will be "that parent". I don't care because the kids matter to me more than anything else. I am glad this woman has been fired because she was a liability and a possible physical danger to the kids.

I love how quitting your job is "not an option", but you had enough money lying around for several trips and bought a disney timeshare---

1st trip Dec 2007, 2nd trip Dec 2008, 3rd trip Dec 2009, 4th trip Dec 2010, 5th trip Oct 2011 as new DVC members!

But not enough money to get your kid out of a crapola daycare situation.

wow, let's turn the tables DIS style and attack people.

There are no other daycare options. Period. Get that through your head. I can't pay more for a "better daycare". There are no openings and everybody where I live is in the same boat. The waiting lists are very long.

You do not know my financial situation and you do not know how we manage to pay for trips or a timeshare. Trust me, I do not have money "laying around". I could work a few overtime shifts and pay for a disney trip if I wanted to. Going on vacations, especially while my kids are young is a priorty for our family and we wouldn't be able to do that without my job.

Quitting my job is not an option because I would screw over my family financially. I would also lose health benefits I need, and I would lose out on a pension I need. Plus I would have to be an idiot to quit a good job with good benefits and start over somewhere else at a fraction of the wage.

The situation has fixed itself because the worker has been fired.

I've been on my children's preschool daycare board for 6 years now. If any employee did that they would be fired ASAP especially when they have only been there 2 weeks.

Her choices are her's alone to make. It sounds like before these purchases, she thought it was a good day care. And, apparently, it is because they took care of a bad worker pretty quickly.

Daycare teachers(in city funded centers) here do not make minimum wage. They have the same education and certification as public school teachers.(many have MA in early childhood, elementary or special ed) They aren't in the same union as public school teachers so the salary is lower. They have free family health and dental, 401K, a pension...

I am totally with you that it needed to be reported! Next time, go the director in private and say 'I believe so and so witnessed it too"
Let the director speak with the employee who witnessed it.
The next time some incident gets reported, whether silly or legit, all fingers will point to you. And sadly, even though you are meaning well, SOME teachers will take it out on your kid.

Daycare workers here are not paid minimum wage. Their wage is government mandated and they are paid according to their level of education. I believe they start at $30,000/year. The government has put a lot of money into daycare education and wages and now workers even have pensions because of the critical shortage of spots.

This one worker was a bad apple. She lasted six weeks.

We will have a lot of fun on our next disney vacation. Life is short and vacations are a priority.

Nice try bitter miserable person.

Wow - I wish I had worked for your daycare! As the teacher's assistant, I did all the labor while the teacher sat around and sang a few songs to the kids. I worked my butt off and came home exhausted each day for very little pay.

And did I read correctly that a woman who ran a home daycare lost her license because her child bit another child? That is not abuse - infants/toddlers bite. Some do it out of frustration for not being able to verbalize, some are just biters. Not all do, but it is not at all uncommon. And I don't care how good you are, you cannot have eyes in the back of your head. It happens

Daycare workers in Canada are not teachers - they have a 2 year diploma in early childhood education or a degree in Child Development.

And yes the government maintains an approved rate of pay as it was the only way to attract people to the field.

No, you did not read correctly. The OP said the DAYCARE PROVIDER was the one who bit her child.

No you did not read correctly.

The owner, not her child, bit my child and was charged criminally.

I spoke briefly with a worker before I went to the director. I wanted to give her the heads up that I was dragging her name into it since she was in the room.

I'm not worried about fingers being pointed at me. I've been going there since Sept. 2008 so they know me well and I know a lot of the workers well.

Yes, that's considered an infant/toddler teacher here in daycares.

OP: Glad you reported it and helped a child, glad she was fired, glad you are otherwise happy with your childcare. But something you wrote (where you shouldn't have had to defend anything at all IMO) piqued my interest. What extra health care benefits do you get from your employer? Just wondering because I thought all Canadians get free universal healthcare and I am trying to understand the differences. TIA!
