Obviously they would be fine for formal and semi-formal night...is there any other time girls where dresses? I don't want to buy 4 of them for each of my daughters if they will only have a chance to wear 2. I am having a very hard time finding some used ones (money is tight for this military family and Craigslist in Vegas stinks) but don't want them to miss out on a chance to wear them when they can.

Also, I have a feeling my girls will think they are itchy. Should they wear a shirt and leggings underneath? I am scared a shirt under will look weird in pictures.

This dress up thing is new for me, so any help/tips is appreciated.

My daughter wears a cami and usually shorts under her dresses. She loves to wear her dresses. There are some she enjoys more than others as some are more itchy.
When is your cruise? If it is after Halloween, you might be able to find more after halloween. Check consignment shops too.
They can wear them for princess meet and greet. They have a princess gathering.

Princess dresses can be worn anytime. DD wears them for dinners, for character pictures (she wears her Tinkerbell one on Pirate night), and dance parties. She has four and I bought each of them for under $10 at the Disney Store Outlet. Have you tried the one in Vegas (Los Vegas Premium Outlet)? I usually call them and she what sizes they have and price before I drive to the one in NJ.

We also get Disney accessories from Party City and Michaels Arts & Crafts. I have found everything from Disney Princess necklaces, Disney Fairies hair bows, Dinsey Princess temporary tatoos, and other Disney stuff (Nemo, Pirates of the Carribean) for under $1. It's a great way to be festive on a budget.

My daughter complains of the itchiness of the princess dresses. We have found that a leotard underneath helps with that. I saw Walmart had their princess dresses out for Halloween already - I think they were $16.97 and looked cute.

We are on a tight budget too! 6 kids and two in college! Yikes!!! I bought mine on eBay! Got great deals but I had to really search and bid carefully! :)

If you can find the ones that actually come from Disney Stores (or the parks) they are not itchy, or much less itchy anyway.

We have been lucky and found a few at yard sales so we didn't have to pay the big $$ at the store (no outlet up here).

The ones they sell in Target and walmart and some of the party stores are itchier. Especially if they put toule or lace on them. They also seem to use a more plastic feeling thread sometimes.

But my daughter wore hers for lots of stuff, even to dinner. Last year we brought a Maleficent costume and she wore it to the Villians show :)

I have found some on eBay both Disney parks and Disney store. (bid carefully). I also put a plea on Facebook to my friends and was able to borrow 2 dresses! Good luck!

Better quality = less itchiness. The itching comes from unfinished seams and raw edges of tulle and other scratchy fabrics. SO....you don't say when you are cruising, but if after Halloween, the Disney store, disneystore.com, and Disney outlet will have decently made princess dresses at 75% or more off. Our local store discounts starting about the week BEFORE Halloween and reduces them even more after.

As above, a leotard or cami under will help. If the dress allows, an undershirt or leotard with sleeves eliminates a lot of the underarm issues.

And...if you can sew even a little, get a product called "Seams Great" and bind the underarm seams. It costs like $2 for a 10 yard roll at any decent sewing store...and a roll lasts a LONG time.

Back to original, some girls wear them all the time....like all day every day. Others only formal night. We met a 7 or 8 year old. When I complimented her on her dress, she told me she had a different one for each night. Glad I wasn't the mom packing all those dresses!

My DD has sensitive skin, so she wears long t-shirts under hers to cover the neck, sleeve and waist. Yes, it was visible in some pics, but she doesn't complain. You could go with T-s the same color and may not be as noticeable.

My daughter wore her costumes each night to dinner but it wouldn't have been a big deal if she didn't wear one each night. Majority of the girls were in normal clothes!

There are people on Etsy who make wonderful dresses inspired by the princess dresses. A lot of them are designed to be clothes, not costumes, so they are usually cotton and really comfortable. Some of them are more expensive than costumes, but some are the same price or even less.
