Princess 1/2 walkers?

Well, I finished and I feel a little bittersweet. Achieving this was such a big goal, I don’t really know what I am going to do next. I am not sure another race is in my future. I know I can’t afford another Disney race any time soon – so I will just have to see.

I appreciate so much the care and concern of everyone of you. It really helped me to know that others who running does not come easily were trying too to achieve this goal. For me I think it was both easier and harder than I thought it would be – easier in that I never turned on my music but just soaked in everything around me. Also, I never really hit any wall or felt that it was anything but doable. I could have done more or gone faster. Harder, I learned I walked slower than everyone else. I always felt like a little kid running to catch up. I didn’t mind running but it was so crowded. I cried a couple of times. Once when I enter Magic Kingdom and saw the Castle, once when I entered Epcot I knew I would make it and twice when I saw a lady in a wheel chair with a sign stating “I am proud of a complete stranger.” I thought about the effort it took for her to get out and support us and it made me grateful to run the race.

For those who are thinking about running or walking this race this would be my advice.

1) START NOW! I wish I had even 2 more weeks.
2) Learn to walk at 15 minute pace before you put in run segments – and you might not even want to but in run segments. I never learned to maintain pace without run segments.
3) Put the miles in and try do some outside – I know it is hard to find the time to put in so many miles at one time – I am not sure if I would have made it if I hadn’t had at least 3 training run/walks of over 12 miles with the longest being 14 miles. Also, hopefully in the spring and the fall you can do some training outside before the weather gets too cold or too hot.
4) Enjoy every aspect – I really enjoyed not just the half-marathon but the training and trying to figure out how to get my pace down, the chatting on the disboards and facebook even if most of the time I was just a lurker, the costume planning, the trip planning and so much more.

To Tinks apprentice – I cried so much reading your report. I know you are proud of your daughter but you need to be proud of yourself. You accomplished so much. So much of the achievement was in the journey not in the outcome and as you stated many ran the race and did not keep the pace – I was at just over 17mm with a long bathroom break, it was just the quirk of being in an earlier corral. Don't let the one moment of being swept ruin the triumph of your effort.

Tinks, You are amazing! It was wonderful to meet you and share that brief moment of race excitement with you & your daughter. You should be so proud of getting out there and making it past mile 8... what an accomplishment! That medal represents all the hard work, and healthy behaviors that made up your training... its so much more than just crossing the finish line.

I agree with you that the sweep policy sucks for those in the later corrals... if you are honest about your finish time, you will be at the back of the pack and you will be playing tag with those pacers the whole way. If you are lucky enough to get into an earlier corral, then you have quite a bit more time on the course to fall off the pace. Lucky for them, not so lucky for the walkers.

I really wish that they would specify the exact sweep points. So, like you said, you would know when it might be OK to take a bathroom or photo break (ie. right after a sweep point) but when its definitely NOT OK (ie. right before). I read someone else's story of being swept at mile 5, and it was the bathroom break that did them in as well.

I'm so very proud of EVERYONE on this thread for making the leap to train and participate in the race - finish line crossing or not!! You are all princesses in my book!!

How many of us walkers will be returning next year? I know it is early to even think about - I am still undecided, as I said earlier my 14yr old DD (would be 15 for the race) really wants to try it. I am just not sure...although I have to admit I have not yet returned to the gym since the race.....I think it is a matter of no goal, but what could ever compare with a Disney race?

I don't think the timing will work out for me to do it again in 2013, but I have my eye on 2014. If it becomes possible, I'll do it again in 2013.

I have absolutely no regrets about the experience. I learned a lot about myself. With the experience of the first race behind me, I will take what I learned to be better prepared and able to finish.

I thank you all for the support and encouragement. I AM proud of my accomplishment. Preparing for and doing the event has changed me in so many positive ways. I never expected it to be such a life changing thing for myself and especially for my daughter. We are both better for it.

This is by no means the end. It is just the beginning!

I'll be back for next year. 5th year anniversary should be a fancier medal... I can't wait to see it!

I'll also be back for the Tower of Terror 10 miler, and hopefully the W&D.

Hello - my name is Megan and I am a RunDisney addict. :lmao:

Post-Disney race depression. I am so there with you...

THAT'S what I'm feeling! I can't believe it's all been done! I got back on the elliptical, but it's just not the same now! waaaahhhh I feel like my purpose is gone!

So what's next then? Well, I still need to FINISH the 1/2 so I joined a running clinic (probably should have been my first step a year ago but what the heck) :rotfl2:

Spring is springing here in Southern Ontario, I've been bitten by the running bug. To have put in so much effort and dedication and come so close but not quite there would have crushed me previously. But I've changed. I'm not crushed, I'm inspired! I WANT to do it again in 2013. I just don't know if we can work it out with the timing (mainly because of my daughter's 12th yr and college applications etc). But I don't want to have to wait until 2014!

Whatever... I'm just going forward with a plan to do it and be better prepared, and stronger and faster, and the rest will take care of itself!

Tinks, have you heard about the Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon? Its on the canadian side of the falls.

http://nfwhm.com/

I think I'm signing up for it tonight. I definitely need to have a race scheduled or I lose my motivation and my next one in September is not close enough. This one is on June 3rd.

4 hour time limit!! We could have a princess reunion... :)

It's tempting, and not far from where I live. The thing I have to work out first is scheduling. It's the weekend of my daughter's birthday, we will have a new puppy by then, and I'm not sure where Hubby will be (fishing season starts soon). But I'm checking it out ;) Thanks!

TinksApprentice - Thank you so much for sharing your trip report. I read it with such empathy. You sound like an amazing mom and person. I wish I had gotten to meet you. You have such a wonderful attitude about it all. I think you are correct about the timing and corral placements though. My friend and I were placed in D. We were in the very front. I finished the race in 3:22:33 and my friend finished in 4:02.55 - which is 243 minutes (approx) divided by the 13 miles (approx) works out to over 18 min. miles...(I think my math is correct?) and she was allowed to continue - she only had 21 finish behind her.... What I am trying to say is that I think the further back in the corral you are the less room there is for any time differences....I hope you will treasure your medal for what it represents - not finishing the race, but having the courage to try!

JohnV - Thanks so much for all your encouragement and expertise that your shared so willingly! My DD 14 wants me to commit to doing the race with her next year, but I am just not sure I could ever do it again...I did all my training in the gym on a treadmill and I think I was not prepared well for the actual road. However living in CT. training outside in the winter is not probable...my question for you is - If I were to commit to do this again what would you advise? I was comfortably able to walk @ 4.3 - 4.5 for 8+ miles @ the gym, but as you can see from my time posted above that is not the pace I did on the course. The only positive is that when I look back at the texts my family got I did negative splits - actually getting faster every mile to the races end...I'm just not sure how to get better - if I walk any faster I will be running (not what I want to do...) but if I don't go faster on the treadmill how do I train? Thanks for your help!

Dreamer2012, you have hit what I consider the walking pace threshold. Most people find that at their threshold it is easier to break into a jog in order to quicken their pace. When this happens, that proverbial bounce usually begins along with other body movements which can result in new injuries and/or discomfort.

If you want to walk faster you might find it difficult to do so comfortably on a treadmill. I did and I still do. You have to hit the pavement, sidewalk, path, school track, indoor track, anyplace outside or inside where you can actually walk.

If you are comfortable with the heel plant stride, this site http://www.racewalk.com/defaultRW.asp can help out. During the January marathon I saw a number of women racewalkers and they were smooth and fast. As I have posted in the past, I cannot get into the racewalk stride without knee issues arising, wish I could because I am super impressed by racewalkers.

To increase my overall speed, I shortened my stride while increasing my foot turn over just to maintain my standard pace. Once the new stride felt comfortable I started to quicken my arm swing without increasing the overall length of the swing and that forced me to walk faster to stay balanced. As I walked faster the heel plant started to shift towards a mid-sole plant.

Let your arms set your pace as you try to speed up but only do it in short bursts to start with. Don't forget to match your breathing to the pace because your muscles will need more oxygen.

Now that the weather is improving and DST starts this weekend see if you can try something. Hope some of this helps you. Good luck and let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions, almost sounds too complicated to try...I never thought it would be so involved....not sure what to do now. Wish there was a "walking coach" - is there even such a thing? I will check out the website - thanks.

I walked the Princess last year and now my DD wants to do it - so I am all but resolved for doing it again - I am wondering if any other walkers are going to do it?

I am hoping to be able to walk the 2013 Princess. My husband says that I can do it and has promised to train with me.

kkfinley - YOU CAN DO IT!! It is possible to walk the entire 1/2 marathon and medal! I did it!! It took me 3hrs -22mins & 33 seconds - but I did it - AND SO CAN YOU!! Nice that your husband will be training with you - it always better to have a buddy. I am training (using that term loosely right now...) with my DD14 for the upcomming PHM. We are signed up to do the COLOR ME RAD 5K next weekend....hope I can make it! Ive been a very bad, lazy girl since end of Feb.

Dreamer2012-YOU CAN DO IT, THE 5K!!! :thumbsup2 I believe you are an inspiration for all who responded to your thread. You and your DD will be fine come the PHM also. Trust me.

Glad your thread was moved to E/C

Yay, the Princess Walker thread is moving again!

Just to let y'all know that I am in full-throttle training to walk the PHM in 9 short months. I'm up to walking 7-mile stretches, once per week. Three times per week, I do a one minute run/walk interval, for three miles. One day is a rest and the other two are for short walks. All of this, and much of my inspiration and information has come from the early pages of this thread. Thank you!

I've participated in 2 5Ks so far [one of them was the Expedition Everest Challenge in DAK]. My goal was to do the run/walk interval in the races but I got overwhelmed and over-winded so I walked more than I ran. These two experiences confirmed to me that I really must walk the PHM.

I found a walker-friendly half marathon in mid-October and a 10K in mid-November - I hope to sign up for those then brave the sweltering Memphis summer mornings getting ready for them.

I can tell that my endurance is really growing but my pacing is only improving microscopically. Just this morning, I was walking 3 miles. Checked my pace afterwards -- Mile 1 was 17:48, Mile 2 was 15:48, and Mile 3 was 16:40. After four months, I finally broke the 16 mm time limit and that was only for one mile! What's up with that??!!?

OK - I have seen it mention a few times that my walkers thread has been moved to E/C - what does that mean? Why was it moved? Im still posting to it now and Im going to the same place so I just do not understand....Thanks!

E/C means teh "Events / Competition Board" - it's a subforum within the W.I.S.H. boards!:)

E/C-what does it mean?---amykay9377 clarified the E/C

Why was it moved?---my thinking is that your once little thread grew SO BIG and full of so much information and inspiration, it belongs in the more competitive section of W.I.S.H. It has hit the BIG TIMES and that is a really good thing. Job well done Dreamer2012. :thumbsup2

debbieandroo---IMO, you should increase your base before you quicken your pace. If you get your body comfortable with more frequent 7 miles walks, cardio and muscle will improve allowing you to increase your pace during shorter walks. Once you start increasing the shorter walk pace, that in turn will allow you to go beyond the 7 miles at the slower pace with more comfort. Then you will be able to go faster for a little longer which will then allow you to go farther at the slower pace....and so on.....and so on, all the time MINIMIZING the possibility of INJURY. Hope this made sene.

Far too many try to go far too fast far too early in their training which then leads to INJURY
