Well, I finished and I feel a little bittersweet. Achieving this was such a big goal, I dont really know what I am going to do next. I am not sure another race is in my future. I know I cant afford another Disney race any time soon so I will just have to see.
I appreciate so much the care and concern of everyone of you. It really helped me to know that others who running does not come easily were trying too to achieve this goal. For me I think it was both easier and harder than I thought it would be easier in that I never turned on my music but just soaked in everything around me. Also, I never really hit any wall or felt that it was anything but doable. I could have done more or gone faster. Harder, I learned I walked slower than everyone else. I always felt like a little kid running to catch up. I didnt mind running but it was so crowded. I cried a couple of times. Once when I enter Magic Kingdom and saw the Castle, once when I entered Epcot I knew I would make it and twice when I saw a lady in a wheel chair with a sign stating I am proud of a complete stranger. I thought about the effort it took for her to get out and support us and it made me grateful to run the race.
For those who are thinking about running or walking this race this would be my advice.
1) START NOW! I wish I had even 2 more weeks.
2) Learn to walk at 15 minute pace before you put in run segments and you might not even want to but in run segments. I never learned to maintain pace without run segments.
3) Put the miles in and try do some outside I know it is hard to find the time to put in so many miles at one time I am not sure if I would have made it if I hadnt had at least 3 training run/walks of over 12 miles with the longest being 14 miles. Also, hopefully in the spring and the fall you can do some training outside before the weather gets too cold or too hot.
4) Enjoy every aspect I really enjoyed not just the half-marathon but the training and trying to figure out how to get my pace down, the chatting on the disboards and facebook even if most of the time I was just a lurker, the costume planning, the trip planning and so much more.
To Tinks apprentice I cried so much reading your report. I know you are proud of your daughter but you need to be proud of yourself. You accomplished so much. So much of the achievement was in the journey not in the outcome and as you stated many ran the race and did not keep the pace I was at just over 17mm with a long bathroom break, it was just the quirk of being in an earlier corral. Don't let the one moment of being swept ruin the triumph of your effort.
