Prep for job interview

Sorry so long for the update. You all were so encouraging I wanted to share what happened.

I had 2 interviews. The first with the person who would be my supervisor. I started down my horrible path of being way to nervous for the first 10 minutes. The I realized what I was doing and reminded myself that he knows me and this was silly. The rest of the interview went great. At the end, he and I were chatting and even though it was still the interview it was a lot less formal. At the end as we were chatting I got the impression I wasn't a serious candidate. We talked about development within the company for a few minutes. It was in a flattering way like he thought that maybe there is something better for me in the company.

Since I was basically told that I wouldn't be getting the job (my interpretation) I went into the second interview that was with a manager in his area basically care free. I feel I nailed it. I had awesome answers.

So I got the call this week that the position went to one of my co-workers who had applied. I am happy for her. Sad for me. I really like him and thought it would be good to work with him. My coworker who got the position has her MBA (this is Finance area). Now I am wondering how much that credential played a role in his decision. I don't have mine.

Have to evaluate my next move. This is my 3rd interview in a year and a half and I haven't gotten a position. I like my current job OK, but I just feel like my time in it has run its course. I am hoping to move up in the company and get into a supervisory role and I think broader company experience would help.

I will get there..Everything in its own time....

Thanks again you all.

I'm so sorry that you didn't get the job you hoped for. But on the positive side, you now have two awesome interviews under your belt and you can draw on that strength when the next opportunity comes along.

I wonder, do you have a mentor? I'm just thinking that it might help you to have someone to talk to about how best to position yourself for future promotion.

But all I really wanted to say was GREAT JOB!!!

Thanks. I don't have a mentor. I went to a talk at our company that was a Q & A with our company's General Counsel. She spoke about the roles mentors played for her. When someone asked her about how to find a mentor, her response stuck with me. She said that most good mentor relationships grow organically because the people have a genuine interest in each other. That just approaching someone to be a mentor usually doesn't work well.

I know I am well liked by many higher ups in my company. Just going to keep working hard and try to make them see what an asset I am.

I am in the process of obtaining a managment position in The company I have worked for 8 years. If I get it I will be 2nd in command of our company locally.

3 years ago I was up for the same position. Interviewed well and they passed on me. Hired guy from outside the company. And yes he was a better fit for position than I was, he did a lot for the company. And I learned and mentored under him. But he recently left due to personal problems. So I have muliple interviews so far.

First one was with HR it was basically a mental exam.

Second one VP said I did great and he said I did great with HR.

Third was with VP and CEO. They came at me with their guns loaded. CEO and VP which I like and admire both of them. CEO was cofounder of company and built it from the ground up and VP started his career at the bottom and worked and earned his way to top. It wasnt just given or handed. The CEO said when you leave this interview you will never ever be the same. It was like an interegation. They were nailing me on questions and situations. No matter what I said or I would do or answered they came back with a rebuttal. I would come back with one and round and round we went. I felt horrible for a few days. I feel they were just trying to rattle my cage.

Had another interview with HR about a week later iit was a follow up to the one with CEO and VP. It was easy. I pointed out to HR that some of the questions and situations they asked were not even rational. She just smile and I heard about those. She said but you handled them well from what I was told, and they know were you stand. I said I could of said the typical answers and the interview would have went better. She said it goes back to character. She said if you would have misinformed or side stepped the questions it comes back to haunt you. She said "off the record always tell the truth don't tell them what you think they want to hear". She said I have seen it come back to bite people on the rear many many times. She also said off the record. Part of the reason they were hammering you was because they wanted to see if you would crackk under pressure or stumble or lie.

Had phone interview again with VP. Some questions were difficult. Some were a cake walk. He came some tasks and goals to,achieve.

Was in meeting yesterday with #1 local manager who has been my main boss for 8 years said. VP will be here in two weeks to finish this up. I asked was it good news or were they just going through the motions. He said good news. Don't worry.

So my words of advice is. Just come ready. Don't be scared. They are speaking to you for a reason. If you know your stuff you know it. Bring positives to table. Loyalty dedication and commitment points.
That is what I did. My company values. Honesty loyalty character commitment dedication. They said we can teach you the rest. But I can't teach you those. Either you have it or dont.

Also I don't know if I will get it or not. I just pray that I will receive that is best for me, my wife and son. That is all I want and need.

Me and thenceo have a little history. When they acquired the place where I am working Six years ago. He sat down and talked with about 60 of the 80 employees. We spoke for about 2 hours that day. He asked me what I thought. I asked him " do you want me to tell you what you need to know or what you like to hear."

He said I want to hear what you think I need to know.

I said when this is over I will either get fired by you or by my boss. I had a Jerry McGuire moment. Told him problems with the company and how to prove that I was correct. When it was over. He said love your passion. I wish more people had it. I wish more people were willing to tell me the truth then sugar coat it. He said I can't fix it if I don't know what is wrong. He said give me 60 days and I will look into these things i promise. Then if your not happy with the progress i am making. We can talk and maybe we can agree on some issues and maybe we will have to agree to disagreed. He said here is my cell phone call me if boss give you any problems.

lawnmd - Thanks for sharing! Best of luck! It sounds like you have your new position.

I will take to heart all you have said. I think I do live and interact in my life with consistent character. I think people notice when you do that.

Kim

OP, maybe you can talk to the folks who interviewed you for some feedback and advise on next steps to move up within the company.
