Port Orleans Riverside Q&A Thread 2013, Part Two [Thread now FULL and closed]

Hello POR board!!!

I just switched our resort from POFQ over to POR in order to take advantage of the free dining promo and save myself over $600 !! YAY!

Looking forward to reading through this board, and exploring POR for the first time :surfweb:

When I faxed my request, I asked for top floor and near the footbridge. We were booked in a standard room and received about the only standard, corner room in that stretch. It was very close to bridge. Loved the location. Room 9711, IIRC.

In EPCOT resort terms, our walk to the South Depot was less than BC to IG. It didn't bother us at all, even in that heat!

HTH

Thanks for the info!

It's not that big of a difference. Oak is a little closer, but it's not like Parterre is in the boonies. They are right next to each other. One end of Parterre is nearly as close, and the other end might be a couple hundred yards extra.

The nice thing about POR is there's always something to appreciate about any building. Parterre may be a bit further from the bridge to the main building, but it is the closest to POFQ. So, if you are leaving the parks at night, and the POR bus line is super long, you can jump on a POFQ bus and walk to your room in less than five minutes. We used a POFQ bus to come back to Port Orleans once, and walked all the way back to AB, and it was ten minutes tops. But Parterre is a very short walk. And you're a little closer if you want to hop over and get beignets or use try out their pool.

We've stayed at POFQ before and visited this past June for beignets, so I doubt we'll be making any trips over there, but that's a really good idea about jumping on their bus if the POR line is really long. I'll definitely keep that in mind!

This may be more of a general question rather than POR, I did a room only reservation on wdw.com, and i bought my tickets on undercover tourist, and they should be coming in the mail soon.. When i go to check in at POR can they put the number of days of tickets i have on our KTTW cards so we only have one thing to carry???

Yes, the concierge can do it, BUT ask them to give you the tickets back after. Otherwise, when you go to use at the parks the first time, if there's a problem you may be out of luck. Happened to my SIL when we were staying at bay lake, the concierge put her 9 year olds ticket on her card and vice versa, also incorrectly entered in the effective date. Couldn't enter at the gate. Fortunately Undercover Tourist customer service is excellent and we just handed our cell phone to Guest Relations at AK and they worked it out with them. If we had kept the (worthless) paper tickets, we could have resolved much faster/easier. Hope that helps!!!

Okay, now that I have read thru the most important parts of this thread and studied up on Andre's site, I am ready to start thinking about room location requests.

Since we have a KING room booked, and King rooms fall under the preferred category, I assume it would be fine to request a building in the preferred category??

I think we like buildings 14,18 & 15 best (in that order) and it would be magical to get a river view as well......but I will leave that one up to the pixie dust Gods ;-)

Ok so I'm close enough to my trip now that the online check in option appears....
Do i do it or not, I know it has been previously discussed however I can't remember the outcome! I already gave some requests over the phone due to pain from a rod in my femur when i walk to much, and i plan on sending a fax just before we go. So do i need online check in?

Ditto here. Wow, very unusual, but I believe Andre is on his way to POR and does not realize it. Maybe he forgot to keep it plugged in!

I got a few emails from my server monitoring service saying that the site had some downtime - annoyingly just while I was travelling so couldn't do anything about it! Seems OK now, and the error messages have stopped.

In a nutshell I recommend head to South Depot every time.

East Depot is the last to pick up and drop off. So buses could be really full by the time they make it there.

No, it varies by park (mostly, anyway). For example MK buses are meant to do the circle route first and then the South Depot. They don't usually share with POFQ.

This morning at 7.15am we went to the South Depot and an MK bus arrived a after a couple of minutes wait - but it was already pretty full of people from the West/North/East depots. We just made it on, but it was standing room only. Coming back, our driver announced that he was meant to do the South Depot last, but if there were a lot of people wanting it then he'd bend the rules and go there first (which he did).

So there is no firm rule, but for the MK at least the South Depot is usually the last stop.

Yes, King Rooms are scattered all around the resort, some with river views or in the preferred buildings. You can request these if you wish. See my floorplan layouts for more details of where they are all located.

I suggest doing so, yes - but don't select any of the request tickboxes if you already have some requests logged on your reservation. If you do it, make sure you do any online checkin BEFORE sending a fax rather though.

Thanks for the quick response! So if I don't check off any boxes on the check in is the reason solely for a speedier process when i arrive? Also do u need to know an aprx time I'm checking in?

We will be at POR on 9-5-13. I didn't remember that this resort was in DTD. I have been trying to book s trip to WDW for years now and we finally booked it! We are only staying 6 d/5 N. I made a lot of dining reservations in the parks, mostly MK and Epcot.
What do I expect our travel by bus to be like? And what about the boat? Does the boat take me to any of these parks? How long roughly does it take? I know there is also a waiting period. How is traveling back after the fireworks from MK to POR?
I hope I do not regret picking a resort in DTD!:upsidedow

My pet peeve is actually the people with the scooters who get on the bus. Some of them cant even drive them, then they park it stand up and walk on the bus. That gets me mad !

In the interest of sharing knowledge in a kind and compassionate manner (because not everyone knows this!), please understand that it's safer for people to NOT sit on their ECVs if at all possible, while the bus is moving. So if the person does have some mobility and can get on the bus, they are asked to do so. Should the scooter fall over in a turn, it's much safer for the ECV user and anyone around them to not have the person falling with the scooter.

And since there are SO many bonafide reasons to use a scooter but also have the ability to walk just a bit, there's no reason in the world to be angry with ECV users who can get on the bus, now that you know the above. :)

As for difficulty driving it...they aren't easy. A lot of people who use them at Disney don't necessarily use them, or don't use those exact models, at home.

I tried to get DH to rent one on our last trip because he had a nasty achilles injury that was misdiagnosed and not helped at all by the orthopedist he saw; if he had done so, he would have had a learning curve at the beginning AND he would have gotten up off of it and walked onto the bus and sat in a seat. But he still would have needed the scooter, and it would have made his trip a LOT less painful and slow. Instead he used a cane, which then caused it to become a knee injury then a hip injury. Fabulous.

And the reason why he wouldn't rent the scooter? He was afraid of being judged by people seeing him on it. He injured himself more and gave himself a worse trip because of the possibility that someone would see him get off of it and walk a bit and think he was a liar. :sad1:

64 days..... standard room and oh I'm so hoping to get Mansions... I just loved the look of them (though obviously I chose to not book Royal this time so I won't get Parterre or Oak!)....

Port Orleans is not in Downtown Disney, though you can take a boat to Downtown Disney from Port Orleans.

You take a bus from Port Orleans to the parks. How long it takes varies on the route the bus takes and which park you're going.

Thank you for your reply. I am still confused as to where the resort is then? The website says Downtown Disney Resort area? Can anyone tell me where the resort is? I am making all these reservations without knowing how long it will take traveling to and from my resort and parks. :worried:

If your looking at a map of Disneyworld like this one,http://paradiseintheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/walt-disney-world-map.jpg Port Orleans Riverside is number 28.

If you look straight down and slightly to the right, that is DownTown Disney.(The big blue ball is Planet Hollywood restaurant). The river that runs from DownTown up to the Riverside and French Quarter resorts, is the Sassagoula River. You can catch a boat to travel between the resorts and Downtown Disney if you like.

Hope that helps!

Disney World property is very big, so they talk about "areas." If you look on google earth, you will see that Port Orleans is just to the right of Epcot, north east of Hollywood Studios, and north west, and not far, from Downtown Disney. It is actually a very convenient resort. You can take a bus to anywhere in Disney World and a boat to DTD. You can also drive to any park or resort on property. It is a very short drive to Epcot or Hollywood Studios and a longer drive to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. You cannot drive directly to Magic Kingdom so buses are best. At the resort bus stops you will get a separate bus for each resort - they have a sign on the front you will see as they approach. I prefer relaxing and using the buses, but will drive somewhere occassionally.

Last night we booked our next vacation with that free dining pincode. Can't wait to be in the Royal Rooms! I haven't been to POR since I was like 4 and then we switched to deluxes. Merry Christmas!
