Pool Chairs...staking claim

I am allergic to the sun (not bad allergy by any means, but if too long in the sun I get rashes) so I go for the shade, and that is harder to get more than anything.

I have had skin cancer already in several places. I am by no means allergic to the sun, but if given the opportunity to be in the shade or sun, it is definitely the shade. I can be in the sun for an hour at a time and then take a bath in SPF 5,000,000.

My concern was that people go out at like 8AM, put their stuff on chairs, then come back at 12:15 to use it for 10 minutes, go off for 2 hours, come back for 10 minutes, and then eventually take there stuff away at 10PM.

I'm going to get chewed up and spit out for saying this but if I see a chair that has been empty for a while and only has a towel or book on it I just move it. There are a few of the round wicker chairs that get taken in this way. I once moved into one of those and two hours later the people came back and collected their things from the side table. I smiled nicely at them and they scowled nicely back.
I'm always prepared to give the seat back if they come within a reasonable time, say 30 minutes, but more than that and you lose. I should also add I normally go to the top deck and there is never a problem for seating so me removing objects doesn't happen all that often. I just would not be afraid to do it. If you are just ask a cast member to and they will.
Chewed up and spit out my butt! I salute you for doing it.

I saw a lot of people seat saving at the shows too but they seemed to be less shameless about it, like perhaps save one or two seats while 4 members of their party are there... I think the reinforcement of stating the no seat saving rule is critical

I know there is limited chair space on the pool decks from pictures and videos I have seen. Do people go out early, put stuff down, and claim a seat for the entire day whether they are there or not?

Just curious because the same happens at our community pool. There are limited tables with umbrellas. People go out at 8AM, put towels on them, and come back at noon.
Yes, guests are requested NOT to save loungers/chairs:

It's also on a scroll on the funnelvision screen to not save chairs.

But, people do it anyway. I also wish there was more enforcement of the suggestion.

They really need cubbies and/or hooks. If I want to swim or use the hot tub, there is nowhere else to put shoes, coverup, sunscreen and towel. I inevitably plunk my stuff down on a lounger feeling guilty that I'm not actually sitting in it - but what else to do? :confused3

WE usually watch for a hour or so (except meals times where I give it more time, everyone needs to eat), if no one returns, I take the items give them to a CM and use the chairs.

AKK

This topic starts wars on this board LOL. It is an ongoing problem and many people have resorted to just putting people's items aside when they see that no one has come back to those chairs for house. I know that CMs can also be asked to move items since saving is never permitted -- especially those that go up on deck at 6 a.m. and put bananas and towels on the chairs and then don't return until the afternoon!

How long do you normally wait? 20m, 30m, 45m,1 hour ... I haven't seen a sign or know of a time limit to wait.
We just move on, if there were lockers or cubbies maybe then that would free up chairs.
I don't like the pools on board and don't sunbathe but must watch DS so with cubbies I could sit on pool edge watch and leave without taking someones seat.
I can see a war break on the ship too; surprised it hasn't happened yet. People have no common courtesy anymore and even less when the paid many $K for a week and want a chair.

Cubbies may not solve the issue but may help a bit.

I have seen one person sit in a row and tell everyone the whole row is saved!! I have also seen people ignore the person and go around to the other side of the row and take the seats they are entitled to.

I have had four bouts of skin cancer on my face with surgeries involved. Sitting in the shade is imperative. And I was NEVER a sun bather, just the skin type and genes I got blessed with. I wear SPF 30 lotion and SPF15 make-up daily!

Ok I have to add this one, never happened before or after but we met the self proclaimed chair police lady, well I should say .......crazy lady.

So we were in Nassau, stayed on board. I am allergic to the sun (not bad allergy by any means, but if too long in the sun I get rashes) so I go for the shade, and that is harder to get more than anything. So when I stumbled upon 2 chairs in the shade at Mickey Pool, I pounced on them. I put my Kyss bag attached and locked to one, my son took the other one. I went to get drinks for us at the drink station DS stayed put and DH went to get something to eat. Well some nasty woman comes by complaining quite loudly and speaking to I assume my son, mind you, DS was 5 at the time, "Why is this bag tied? It isn't allowed, you can't save seats, that is the rule. I can't watch my children in the pool!" I heard it at the drink station & back to the chairs.
I looked but didn't see any kids she was looking after, there were a couple of kids near by and in pool but, with other adults. I get back and she continues with me "you can't do that! that is saving a seat!". I politely said yes I was saving my seat for me, while getting drinks for me and my son whom you have been screaming at the whole time. I was over there, and Yes I heard the whole thing from way over there. DH comes back and asked what the problem was, at that she huffed something like "people are so rude" and left
The kicker is, no kids were following her.
So Yeah watch out for that one

But honestly since I'm not much for lounging around the pool in the sun this was the only incident I had with saving seats albeit completely backwards and totally weird.

We do save a seat for one or two that are at Preludes or something, but no crazy chair police lady there. Most of the times we are just getting there when show is about to start.

Sounds like she was mad and probably thought someone had beat her to her favorite spot and held chairs she herself normally reserves and was thinking she could bully a 5-year old to get a few seats.

I find it ironic that people that are normally the worst examples of a behaviour often cannot see such and try and turn situations around making themselves the victim. She definitely appears to fit that mold.

I know, my poor kid got a lesson on how not to ever act in public. He is super shy, so didn't say one word to her, which probably made her more upset:D. He asked me if we took her seats afterwards too, and I said didn't you hear her there are "no saving seats" so they weren't hers either. Poor kid, now I laugh but I was so annoyed at the time.

Now see, I don't consider that seat saving! You were actively using the chair and left but were in the same vicinity. No different than if you got up to use the bathroom and came right back! And the woman was totally out of line yelling at a child!

Yes, but it never occurred to me what "hardis5" stated. I just thought she had a few too many screws loose.
She must have run in to get food or something (first in family up) and on the way out would normally throw towels on those seats. So when we showed up, she wanted her spot back. I had my DSLR in my KYSS and didn't want to go back to room since there were these 2 perfectly nice chairs there. When she shows up chairs taken, not only taken but locked with someones bag that she couldn't move. Heck there were items on other chairs all around us, she could have moved their stuff but she left. Slowly but surely the squatters of the chairs around us showed up too.
It must be a Morning Nassau thing. People staying on board get up later, nab seats, go eat, come back to chairs. We were there about an hour and a half, then went on with our day, but I was looking out for her the rest of the cruise.

Have you noticed whether this affected him at all? Does he remember it? It's a good thing you were nearby. She had no business trying to bully your child. You could have reported her.

I see one of the problems is the lack of anywhere else to put a towel while you are in the pool. If you show up and just want to swim in the pool or sit in a hot tub, where else could you put a towel? Maybe they should add some cubbies by these areas.

Why would you need to put a towel anywhere? There is always a pool attendant handing out fresh towels. You don't bring the towels from your room. At least not on DCL.

Pity they don't have a small cheap timer with a green and red light. When you leave the chair you press the button (or it could sense the weight has lifted when you stand up) and it stays red for X minutes to show it is occupied then turns green meaning it is available.

It only affected him in so much as how NOT to act. We laugh about her now, he doesn't remember the actual incident, except from what DH and I have said through the years. We do remember her and always laugh at the terminal saying " do you think crazy is on this cruise"

It's the same in the theatre. Despite multiple announcements that reserving seats is not allowed, I found I had to try several empty seats before finding one that hadn't been "reserved"
That's the worse! They save the whole darn row! Ya gotta be quick to get a seat!

The signs are clear. No reserved seating allowed. If someone is not in their chair for 30 minutes, they are clearly not using it because chairs are for sitting, not holding towels or personal belongings. If they are gone that long, either move their towels or ask a CM to help you move them. If someone comes back and complains that you stole their chair, refer them to the sign, apologize and tell them you understand they must be super important, important enough for their own reserved VIP section by the pool, but rules are rules and if they have a problem with the rules they should contact DCL.
