Then I'll tell the story, anyway...just would have been better with that lead in.![]()
First some backstory... we've always been very open and honest with our kids about all kinds of people and since they have an uncle who used to be sort of a gay rights activist they knew at a young age what it meant to be gay (I'll tell you about the uncle another time).
Anyway, my 16yo was on a United Nations Pilgrimage Tour recently--there were 3 groups of 50 kids each, mainly from the US, but some from Canada and a few from Europe. They put 4 kids (obviously of the same sex) in a 2 double-bed room together. No big deal to my son, but boys that age can be pretty weirded out by that. Anyway, at one stay my son (Ben) walked into a room and two boys were already in there. My son was informed by one boy (call him boy 1) that Ben was sleeping with boy 1. Ben said ok, but why? Boy 1 said because "boy 2 is Canadian".Now Ben was really confused. Turns out that boy one had never met someone from Canada before except someone his mother knew, who happened to also be gay. What reasoning skills that this bright boy had to make that leap with boy 2, huh?
Of course very sad that someone could be so damn stupid, but when Ben told me about it we laughed in disbelief.
So this child, on a UN tour, thought all Canadian men/boys were gay? How did he think they continued to populate Canada?
Well, I guess that was the point of the tour for the kids was to open their minds, right? Some got opened more than others, I suppose.
