photo sharing: halloween at home

I might have to try this next year.

It's a great idea

I had the idea a few years ago when I got frustrated by the lack of decent pictures of the kids in their costumes. Once I committed to getting a decent shot of my own kids for Halloween, it was an easy jump to include others. My advice is to keep it simple, set it up near where you are handing out candy, and be prepared to shoot kids as quickly as possible because they won't want to waste a lot of time posing when they can be trick-or-treating.

Our neighbors all love it because they now have decent pictures of their own kids and they love watching the slideshows. We shoot a lot of the neighborhood events - block parties, birthday parties, etc - and everyone asks to watch them when we are hosting events at our house. We've only been here 3.5 years, but the kids have all grown tremendously during that time and a lot of people have moved into and out of the neighborhood.

Thanks for the advice Mark. This could be a cool thing to add to my halloween display...

Last night was pumpkin carving night at our house. Well, that lead to wanting to take some shots of said pumpkin....... Then.... my first attempt at light painting. (I might be hooked, it was fun.)

Thanks. This was my first attempt at carving a pumpkin other than the typical run of the mill jack-o-lantern face. It was not as hard as I thought it would be, but I learned a lot.

We had some fake pumkins that I carved the Black Pearl and my wife wants me to do the other one with the castle.

Here are a few of mine...

It was raining here, so we didn't get to take any outdoors like I wanted. I certainly didn't set up a backdrop with lighting to get these, and these were taken after trick-or-treating in the rain. It was all I could do to get everyone to hold on while I set up a tripod in my living room. I'm a natural light photog, and I'm still learning to bounce my flash, as is obvious here. lol

We went to the neighborhood halloween party and there was a man holding a very nice Nikon with a speedlite. I didn't know him, but asked him if he would mind using my Canon with speedlite. He seemed very uncomfortable. lol Anyway, he took this shot.

I took over 350 shots last night. We set up the garage as a studio for Halloween and shoot all the neighbor kids as they trick-or-treat. It's great fun, but now I've got a lot of work to do on the pictures.

Ahhhh... what an AWESOME idea! Bet you were the hit of the neighborhood!

Awesome!

I went to a pumpkin blaze at an old mansion in Hudson Valley New York (sleepy hollow area) man did I have a hard time getting those pumpkins in such low light conditions...and no tripods were allowed!

Great job...very cool.

Not my child. My kids didn't dress up this year. They went to a party wearing black t-shirts and jeans...teenagers.

I swear that my wife created a costume with bright white and flat black just to challenge me.

Here is the downloadable slideshow that I made. It only works on a PC. I'll make a streaming video version of it later.

This is the third year that we've done it. It is a big hit and I get lots of compliments on it every year. Everyone loves it almost as much as I enjoy doing it. Although I will admit that it is an exhausting endeavor, especially this year when I didn't have an assistant to help with posing or handing out candy.

Nice shots everyone! I was Minnie Mouse this year. I bought the ears at a local Disney Store, and made the rest of the outfit myself. All shots taken with my a200 and Minolta 50 1.7. Also below are my friends dressed as a cat and a witch.

Here's my kids!
My baby girl was a lady bug! So darn cute!
