Any advice on eating on Ohana with a peanut allergic child? The peanut sauce on the menu makes me leary. Disney is the only place I would trust. I know there have been threads on this before but I couldn't find them.

Also I thought there was a stick about emailing Brenda for help/suggestions with dining with allergies. Can anyone help with that?

We haven't been to Disney in 3 years and I just realized our 180 days is in 18 days!

Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

ETA: I did find Sue's sticky so I found the information for Brenda and for contacting Disney. I would love to hear specific experiences with eating at the Polynesian which is where we'll be staying.

Is Chef TJ still there? It is worth a call to the Poly to find out and find out what days he is likely to work. He was formerly at Boma and is - without a doubt - the BEST chef on the property if you have food allergies. He was there this past summer (2009) - and planned our ADR around his work schedule so he would be there. He is wonderful beyond words - worth planning your whole vacation around - IMHO - and your child will have a wonderful experience.

If he isn't there - I've had generally excellent experiences at all the restaurants so I think you'd be fine.

My son has life-threatening PN and TN allergies, and we enjoyed a great meal there last summer. I, too, was a bit nervous but found reassurance on this board. We didn't connect with Chef TJ, but we did have a very attentive chef and waiter who kept the peanut sauce away from us. I think that the bread and dessert may have had cross-contamination issues, also, though he is also allergic to coconut, so that might have been the problem. I did wipe down his area of the table and chair because I knew that the peanut sauce was there and a messy child could've been climbing in that chair. I can be a little paranoid!

I'd heard mixed reviews, but we had a great meal and the kids enjoyed the "activities."

I have a life threatening PA and ate at Ohana without a problem. We did go for breakfast though and there wasn't any peanut sauce served at that meal.

I have a Peanut and Soy allergy. When I make ADRs I let the CM know to attach a note that I have allergy restrictions. When we arrive at the restaurant it is marked on our reservation and the chef usually comes out to the table with a book of ingredients for what I can order, in the case of Ohannas or a buffet they would show me what I can't have. I have eaten at many different restaurants at WDW and I have never had a problem.

We've dined at Ohana during breakfast and dinner with my 2 peanut-allergic kids without a problem. At breakfast, the kids were not able to have the bread. Almost all TS at Disney have told us that the breads, except for hamburger and hot dog buns, have a "may contain warning" for peanuts. They don't make the breads at Disney, so can't guarantee their safety. At dinner we requested that the peanut sauce not be served. It wasn't a problem. Also, the kids couldn't have the bread pudding, so got ENORMOUS bowls of ice cream. Once you've made your ADRs, email specialdiets@disneyworld.com. They'll email you a form to fill out with name, vacation dates, ADRs, allergies, etc. They take care of forwarding the info to the chefs. When you dine, they chefs will visit your table and go over safe options and any special requests. Dont' worry. You'll have a great time!

Thanks for all the wonderful and helpful advice. We have a week to go before making our ADRs and we're still working on our schedule. But I'm definitely not afraid of O'hanas anymore.

Any experience with Yak & Yeti at AK? We've never done asian as a family but I know my other 2 would love the menu.

Ate at Yak & Yeti twice. Didn't have a problem at all :thumbsup2... same as all WDW restaurants, just noted the allergy in the ADR etc. From memory both times I had the chicken lo mein and chicken rice, yum, it was such a great meal, thats why we went twice. We had only booked once but the food was so yummy we went back another day. I often don't have desserts as they are often not safe and I'm not a big icecream fan so I don't think we had dessert there.

Now OT a bit..... Just on the asian food thing, I ate at an asian restaurant in Anaheim recently just for future reference and if you have one near by, it was PF Changs. The food was SOOOOOOOO good and they are very allergy friendly. They have one peanut dish on the menu, don't use peanut oil and they kept reassuring me that they had cleaned the dishes, they were fantastic. It's a shame that many with severe peanut allergies stay away from all asian foods, Thai and some Malay are the main asian foods I keep away from as Thai is known for using peanut oil. I have never had a problem with a Japanese restaurant, we eat at several Japanese restaurants a lot (weekly). I always ask about oil they cook with before going to a new asian restaurant as I do at every restaurant, asian or not but aside from Thai restaurants I have never had a problem at Japanese and many Chinese resturants. :goodvibes

Thanks so much for the response. I put Yak & Yeti on my list!

I have heard of PF Changs. I don't think we have one nearby but I'll be on the lookout.

Thanks for the positive response.

I'm sure you already know but I wanted to share this with you just in case, we take a few clorox wipes with us in baggie and wipe down everything and we also use the disposible place mats to add an extra layer of protection. And on a side note, the reason that many asian places use peanut oil is because they cook with very high heat and the peanut oil does not burn like other veggie oils do.

We've also dined at Ohana with peanut and tree nut allergies and had a wonderful experience. We plan to go back. While the breads at any restaurant at Disney are rarely safe for us (except the yummy cornbread at Trails End and Mickey's Backyard BBQ), they usually have the tapioca rolls that are safe for other food allergies, too. I'd guess probably wheat since they are made from tapioca, but I'm not certain. I always request those, even if the chef doesn't offer them, and they almost always have them on hand at the sit-down restaurants.

Enjoy!
