Hi All.Just a quick question. How long do your passports have to be in date to travel to the USA from the UK. Its just the my two DD 9 and 13 have passports that will have around 5-6 months left on them when we travel in May. I am almost sure they need to have at least 9 months left on them but may be wrong.

All depends who you are flying with.
Generally if its a scheduled carrier like Virgin or BA then passports only need to be valid for dates of travel. If its a charter carrier then some require 6 months.

I've always been told to have 6 months left. Last year my sons was 10 days short of 6 months but we got him a new one just to be safe as we couldn't get a concrete answer.

Any months you have left on old passport can be added to the new one with a max of 9 months.

we couldn't get a concrete answer.

Its on US embassy website and on Airlines websites here are links for the Emabassy Info and Virgin but you should be able to get info for any airline.

From the US embassy website FAQs Here

Does my British passport have to be valid for six months beyond my date of departure from the United States?

No, if your passport is not valid for at least six months beyond your date of departure from the United States, it will not affect your eligibility to travel. The United States has an agreement with the United Kingdom automatically extending the validity of a passport for six months past the passport's expiration date. Therefore, your passport need remain valid only for the duration of your stay in the United States.

If you are traveling visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and your passport is not valid for 90 days, you will be admitted into the United States until the date on which the passport expires.

For info from Virgin look here for a UK citizen, departing the UK.

The key bit at the top being.

Passport required.
- Nationals of United Kingdom (Great Britain) may enter with
passports valid for period of intended stay.

I travelled 2 years ago with less than 3 months on my passport and it was fine, if you have British passport it only needs to be valid for length of stay.

Well sent away today for 2 new 5 year ones for them. £46 + £6.90 for check and send through the post office. Seems everyone seems to make a mint off holidaymakers.

Although the US embassy rule should override everything else I have heard of people being 'told off' for not having 6 months left (still been allowed to travel but basically told to not let it happen again) as some airlines/travel companies have this policy for some reason :confused3

With Virgin it is 6 months left on the passport, whether they enforce it I don't know. I would just renew to be on the safe side, up to 9 months is added on to your new passport if you have time left on it.

It was Virgin I flew with when I only had a couple of months left and they were fine, I phoned beforehand to check and they said it only had to be valid for length of stay. Just checked on their website and it says this:

U.S.A. (US)

Passport required.
- Nationals of United Kingdom (Great Britain) may enter with
passports valid for period of intended stay.
Passport Exemptions:
- Holders of a valid on arrival Form I-512 ( Authorization for
Parole of an Alien into the United States").
- Holders of a Temporary or Emergency passports

With Virgin it is 6 months left on the passport,

Sorry to disagree, Again link for Virgin info. Passport only needs to be valid for dates of travel, they do not have a 6 month rule, UK citizens travelling under the Visa waiver programme are exempt from the 6 month rule.

Info is obtained from here http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/passengerinformation/healthandvisainformation/index.jsp

That's fine Wayneg. I know it was on Virgin Atlantic's website back in November as I was specifically checking it for my son's passport that ran out in July when we were going in December and I read it on there. This is what I was referring to, as it took a lot of digging around on the site to find it.:goodvibes

I think the confussion is because there is a 6 month rule and any anyone not travelling under the Visa waiver program will more than likely require at least 6 months on the passport.
It is far easier for tour ops to give a blanket 6 month rule than the correct info, even Virgin holidays give the 6 month rule out http://www.virginholidays.co.uk/info/important/faqs/default.aspx?category=6

Also had this discussion on another forum with a travel agent, she gave out info of 6 months, thats what she was trained to give as its easier that working out which airline requires what.

So yes there is a 6 month validity rule but majority of us are are exempt with Virgin to USA under the VWP.
Very very confusing, and even though you can travel with less than 6 months on personally I wouldn't as you can add upto 9 months on a new passport from an old one.

I had real fun and games yesterday trying to sort this out!:headache:

We go to WDW on October 22nd for a fortnight, our passports are valid until January 22nd 2010, so I was looking at having to pay about £300 to renew them so they were valid for the 6 months after date of travel.

I saw the info that Wayne posted yesterday, and thought "Brilliant, that's extra spending money". DH asked me to ring and make sure that the info. was being followed by the relevant parties, ie Virgin.

I rang my travel agent, who told me it was definately six months, when I queried it, she said they were told it was 6 months, so they didn't have to check the individual countries information. I stated that the us embassy site said no extra validity was needed, she got snotty and said they have to say 6 months.:confused3

I then rang the passport service, as stated to in the back of the Virgin Holidays brochure, they passed me on to the home office travel advisory or some such, who said that it used to be 6 months, but I'd have to ring the us embassy to check. I rang the embassy, who got snotty when I said I had read that none was needed, and directed me to the website, but wouldn't give me a verbal answer.

I then rang Virgin, and got someone in India who had to go away and check, but came back and said it was 6 months, when I queried this she went away again to check, but still claimed it was right. I said the website says differently and so does the brochure, but she swore up and down that 6 months was correct!:scared1:

DH now wants to renew the passports before we go.:eek:He doesn't seem to understand that I will have to take the money from somewhere in order to order them 8 weeks before travel. He seems to think we can just try to get them a month or so before we go.:rolleyes1

Don't get me wrong, there is money to go and have enough spending money, but then the eldest needs Prom money, and all the other stuff that seems to come out of the blue that you can't budgeted for, and as I run the finances, I have to magic the money exactly when it is needed apparently.:scared:

There does seem to be an awful lot of confusion about this issue. If there is any confusion about anything I always err on the side of caution regardless. In this case I would get the passports done and it is one less thing to worry about. I am just not the type of person to take chances and prefer to play safe even though the chances are everything would be okay.

I have just booked a summer holiday to Spain and was told that everyone needed 6 months left on the passports to go there too. I certainly didn't think you needed 6 months to travel in Europe:confused3:confused3

Apparently Spain have their own rules regarding this and advance passenger information which are different to other European countries, not sure why though.

I am a worrier so i would also make sure i had more than 6 months left and if i didn't then i would renew.

Hi there, new to these boards (and am using my kids ID!), my kids passports all run out in October, and we are going the end of Aug/early Sept, so I was really concerned. I found this in the:- Embassy of the United States LONDON UK website:-

You Are In: Home > Consular Affairs > Visas > Nonimmigrant Visas
Nonimmigrant Visas
6-month Passport Validity Extensions

Countries with agreements with the United States to extend passport validity for an additional six months
If you are a passport holder from anyone of the following countries, the requirement that your passport be valid for six months beyond your date of departure from the U.S. is waived.

Your passport must be valid on entry into the U.S. If the passport is not valid for the duration of your stay, you will be required to apply for a new passport from your Embassy while in the U.S. If your visit will be of short duration during which time your passport will expire, we recommend that you obtain a new passport before traveling as you will be admitted only until the date on which the passport expires. Such action before you depart for the U.S. will save you the inconvenience of applying not only for a new passport, but also an extension of stay.
