Thanks for the congrats! It is computerized...it is the Brother CE5000 PRW. I hope I like it! I do not know anyone with this brand IRL...just you ladies here. My mom has my Great-grandmother's sewing machine...the kind that is attached to the sewing cabinet. It needs to be cleaned and have maintenance done on it, so in the meantime she bought a Janome. She is making costumes for my girls for our trip. My MIL has a Janome embroidery machine she uses for all of her sewing and is making some outfits for the girls. Now, hopefully I can contribute to what they are wearing as well, even if it is just pajama bottoms.

I have 2 great "teachers" so hopefully this new endeavor will not be a disaster!

Good afternoon all! I am not sure if any of you remember me...I am a "window shopper" mainly, but have posted a few times. I am so excited and had to share...I ordered my very own sewing machine today from Wally World and it should be here next week!

Hopefully I will have some creations to share soon! Everyone on here makes such beautiful things and you have all inspired me to sew for my girls. I will be getting some patterns from ycmt when I get home tonight and am on my home computer. I can't wait!

I was inspired to begin sewing after seeing boutique Dis dresses on ebay......

I have been at it for about three weeks and I am HOOKED! I'll never know why it took 36 years to figure out sewing was such a fantastic thing to do!

Just wanted to say good night to everyone! My induction is tomorrow at 7:30 am. I am still dilated to 5 cm and 50% effaced so hopefully I'll have a baby by lunchtime! I wish you all great sewing! I'll post pictures when I get home!

I am plugging away at my Big Give outfit for Isabelle but it is taking some time since it is ALOT of applique work (I have never done anything this in-depth before) I am looking for advice on those of you that paint the faces one. What kind of paint do you use and what is the best method to apply this. Hand sewing it kinda scares me so I am thinking painting might be easier. Any thoughts? I will post some pics tomorrow of the capris (I am more then half way done the appliques on those). i have not started the top yet---I need to get cracking.

I hand-embroider the faces if they're smaller. I didn't do that on Bullseye because doing large appliques is a LOT easier than doing small ones! Here's the online tutorial I used to learn to how to hand embroider. I like the whipped backstitch for the outlines and the satin stitch to fill in. Oh, I usually draw the outline on with a fabric marker (the kind that washes right off with water) so I know where to stitch the lines.

I've been around since the first thread too! I couldn't find my first post but it was in september. I joined the DIS at the end of August. I found Jham first post - It was September 19th In case you wondering Jhammie. It was kinda fun looking waaay back to our humble beginnings. I can't believe how much older the kids are looking already!! And it was nice to see alot of familiar names and people who are still with us!!

Jessica- I have to say I was wondering if it was Dallas in the piglet outfit too. Which was very darling by the way. What a good sport to assist you in modeling!

First off, of you are sooo talented! I found this thread a couple of weeks ago, but normally I'm a lurker (as you can tell by my post count)! I've been a sewer since I was a teenager - cross-stitch, smocking, etc. But life got in the way and I haven't done as much lately as I would like to, but you guys have inspired me! I got Carla's bowling shirt pattern and made my DS4 a wall-e shirt, but I don't think I have enough posts yet to show you the picture. I'll probably be doing things for him and nieces and nephews, because my girls are now 13 and 9, and probably won't wear twirly skirts anymore! Thanks for being such a great group!

Loving with patchwork skirts. As soon as Hope is a bit bigger, I'm going to give one of these a try.

I've been naughty and bought some fabric ready for our trip in December. Its patchwork fabric so wasn't cheap (well to you guys - as long as the customs men don't see it, it is for me )

I wish all patterns ran the same. I made this a size 3 (she wears a 5T or 4/5 in a shirt and it is too big in the top. If she isn't careful, it will be hanging off one shoulder. At least she will be able to wear it for a while, I'll just need to pick up some more of this fabric to keep in the stash so I can add some tiers to it as it gets shorter.

I had an older non-computerized sewing machine up until a few months ago. I love my computerized Brother, but I would LOVE an embroidery machine! A computerized machine works about the same as an older model for appliques. It just makes it a little easier to set your stitch width and stuff.

I can't remember if I replied to you about the year you got married! 1994 was an awesome year!

Here's what I have done so far for my MAW Big Give contribution.

I was originally planning to use a variety of blue, cream and pink prints for ruffles in the back like I did for the Snow White dress I shared recently. However I got to thinking that the ruffles might add too much bulk so I was thinking it might be better for packing to do a simpler back, perhaps stripwork of a few prints with a ruffle at the bottom. That would also be easier to touch up with an iron if needed (although I don't touch an iron when I'm on vacation I won't assume others are the same LOL). What do you all think?

I agree, I don't think I'd put ruffle on the back, might get too hot.

Very cute! While my Claire is very girly, she is not so much into ruffles...which makes me very sad!

I just put the set in the mail. My pictures stink. I took them with my DH's camera because my camera battery was dead. I should have taken the time to charge my battery and get the pics I wanted. Basically (if you can't tell from the pics) it's a double layer "poodle" skirt with Pluto as the "poodle". There is a layer of tulle between the two layers. The top is a peasant top that is black/white striped (play off of the fashion trend of the 50's) with a big "I" on the top (think big L on Laverne's shirt from Laverne & Shirley). Black tie belt. That's it.

I just stuck it on w/heat n bond and did the zig zag that is the standard/default width and spacing on our machine. Time will tell how it holds up, but I don't think it will fray a whole lot I've made frayed appliques that don't even fray that much but I'm hoping the heat 'n' bond will help keep it from fraying. If it does fray, then that will be the look I was going for all along, right? Luke made Tessa the cutest thing (you already know what it is) and it went in the mail Monday, so hopefully you'll get it soon!

anyone???? If not idea about painting then how do you do small facial details on faces? I am so scared that I am going to mess this up and I already have so much time in it.

Your appliqués look wonderful so I don't blame you for being hesitant.
Personally, I wouldn't use paint because it's hard to fix any mistakes. If you hand embroider, you can at least take out the stitches if you don't like them.

If you do want to try it, do a test first on the same fabric as you used for the appliqué. That way you can see if anything unexpected happens, like bleeding or running.

That is gorgeous! How do you do the eyes? Your applique's eyes always look so good!

For these everything was done on the machine, even the white dot was a small fabric piece I satin stitched around. I do a line of medium brown straight stitching on the lower edge of the eyes and black along the upper edge as well as for the lashes. I try to use appliquéd pieces whenever possible but sometimes the face is too small so I have to hand embroider the details.

Yes, each pattern included in the issues has multiple sizes. It's like other such patterns with each size a different line. It takes some time to get the pattern pieces traced because in addition to adding seam allowance, the patterns for all the designs are printed to overlap each other. That means one pattern page could have 10-15 pattern pieces for 3-4 garments on it. They are color coded but I still have to double check regularly to be sure I'm following the right lines for the pattern piece and size I need.

I just finished this tee for Zoe. She decided on our recent DLR trip that Jasmine is her current favorite princess - I think mostly because Jasmine wears pants. LOL This gave me a chance to see how well I did drawing her hands. I think they look OK but I might tweak them for the next princess.

I also have done these tees in my continuing effort to use up some of the tees I've accumulated. I've been wanting to try some of the dwarfs since I've never done them so this was a fun chance to experiment.
