Outlandish discussion - Jamie Fraser & the Outlander Series!

Joining this thread. DH bought me Outlander, just have to read it.

Which should I do first: Outlander, The Host, or Guilty Pleasures?

Don't start Outlander until you're ready for the commitment. Honestly, I started Outlander and then had to go through the whole series. It took me a few months and I read nothing else.

The Host is kind of a "fluff" read (IMO) so you might start with that. I don't know about Guilty Pleasures. I might get the easy stuff out of the way and then move on to the Outlander series.

Wow, I've actually read all three of these!

Outlander > Host > Guilty Pleasures (though all were fun to read).

I'm in!! Guess I am going to have to pull out my books and reread them since it has been a few years since I have read them - my house is going to really dirty by the time I finish them. :rotfl2:

Another one here. I have all the books. I am re-reading them all in preparation for September. I am almost done with the 2nd book.
Just love Jamie and Claire!

I read Outlander a few weeks ago and I started Dragonfly in Amber, but now I've stopped reading it. It has been very hard for me to get into.

Oh, I just received these books upon a recommendation from someone on the DIS. I can't wait to start-I love time travel.

I'm in too! Love the books. I've read the first 2 a couple of times, and the rest of them once. I'm glad to hear there's another out in the fall, guess I'll join the crowd and start reading them all again, in preparation!

I don't think a movie could ever do it justice. It would just be a big disappointment. They wouldn't follow the plot, and it would be sad.

I wish I actually owned all the books, but I get them from the library. I have to be careful about leaving them around, with a 9 year old girl who is very interested in what mom's reading... you never know what page she'll open up to!

I'll join in-I love this series! I have yet to read A Breath of Snow and Ashes yet-I'm kind of waiting until closer to when the 7th book comes out so I can go right from one to another. Is that really going to be the last one? :sad2:

As much as I think I'd enjoy watching a movie of Outlander, I don't see how they could really do that justice in two hours. There is so much plot in these books, you'd have to make a movie out of a piece of it, not the whole thing.:confused3

Jamie was my second choice for my son's name actually and he's 15 now. I read the first 3 books years ago and just picked them up again recently to start over. I'm sure he's glad I didn't name him Jamie as that's his girlfriend's name :rotfl:.

Another huge Outlander fan here! They are my fav series of books EVER.

Like a pp said, I have read my paperback copies so many time they were falling apart, so I have had to buy nice hardcover copies to replace them all. Then my hardcover copy of Fiery Cross imploded, so I had to buy a SECOND hardcover copy! :upsidedow

Have you introduced any friends to the books? I have "hosed" (online term for getting someone else addicted to the Jamie books) my best friend and my husband! He got tired of hearing friend and I gush without knowing what we were talking about. ;)

Those of you who have read all the books, which is your favorite??

My fav is Voyager. I simply adore the part in A. Malcolm's printshop .

As far as a movie is concerned, I almost hope they don't. It would be lovely to see it on the screen as long as it was done well (Peter Jackson should do it), but so much would have to be cut out. A lot of the story is inside Claire's head, and it would be hard to translate her feelings to something visible in a movie. Also a lot of the MPPHMM!! (Scottish noise meaning physical acts of love) scenes would have to be cut out or really tamed down or we would be looking at an X rated movie! That would be no good.....

Or maybe it would be.....?

I think my favorite is still Outlander. Young Jamie is just sooooo wonderful.

Has anyone read the Lord John series? I think I might have to while I wait for the new book in September.

I have to say I am torn about his character. I like him as a person, but I hate that he loves Jamie so much. They seem like they would be interesting books though.

Gerard Butler for Jamie...all the way. He already has the accent, is definitely tall enough, and is just too sexy for words.

I'm having trouble coming up with someone for Claire. Kate Beckinsale comes to mind, but no one really "screams" the part.

I have to agree, that he pretty much hits it on the nail for me as well.

I recently saw a suggestion somewhere for Rachel Weisz for Claire--I think she'd be great in the role. She has that air of capability about her.

As much as I do like both Kate and Rachel, for what ever reason in my version of the Outlander crew, Clair is more like Helena Bonham Carter.

I almost don't want them to make a movie. I like my version of Jamie and I don't know if I want it to change!

I so totally agree with this. There have been so many books that I have loved, that once made into a movie it is ruined for me, by either the actors not matching up to my version or they just don't do justice to the style of the writer. I love the Flowers in the attic series, but when they did the movie for the 1st book, it was horrid beyond words.

I am so happy to see this new thread-I love the Outlander series!

I've read some of the Lord John series (I have a signed copy, actually:thumbsup2), but they just don't compare to Outlander itself.

I have a hard time imagining the books as a movie-they are just too detailed. I think it would be a lot like the Harry Potter movies in that so much of what makes the books special is missing, but I bet most of the sex would make it into the film:rotfl2:

I have the Lord John series as well. I don't like it nearly as well. I think DG needs to use alot of words in order to make the story come through. She is not a short story writer!

If the series was to be put on film it would have to be a mini series, but then it couldn't be on tv!

I was thinking last night, who would play Murtagh? Any ideas?

I used to Think Mel Gibson for Jamie, but he is too old now.

I think the first book is my favorite, but then I haven't re-read all of then yet. I don't care for the time they are in Paris in Dragonfly. I did like Ashes.

Those of you who have read all the books, which is your favorite??

I really don't know...they all have their good parts! I think it would be a toss-up between Outlander and Voyageur if I absolutely had to pick a favourite.

I love this series . I'm planning an imaginary trip to Scotland as we speak...:rotfl: I just started Fiery Cross.

I could have screamed through the beginning of the 2nd one though... I was so angry.

I'll definitely be re-reading all of them before Sept.

Oh yeah. I kind of wish he'd been cast as Eric on True Blood as well.

:lmao: He would make a great Eric... but that's not how I picture Jamie at all!

Alright, alright. I'll take one for the team and play Claire.
It will be difficult to get paid to roll around with Jason Lewis, but if it will help get the movie made....:rolleyes1

:rotfl:

I love these books-i have been hooked for years-since Outlander was first released in paper back years and years ago-ive worn out two sets of paperbacks and cant wait for Echo in the Bone-but i think making a movie would be wrong-you would loose entirely too much of the content.

Ok. so I have a question regarding the ghost in Outlander I don't want to give anything away so I'm putting it in white:

On Gabaldon's website she answers that the Ghost is Jamie. ??? I'm not sure I want to know more right now but I HAVE to know if this is brought up in later books and explained... I'm just at the beginning of Fiery Cross and I don't see how this could possibly come up after this point.

I believe DIana has said that All Will Be Answered Eventually. An Echo in the Bone (upcoming book) is not the last book in the series, so I am not sure we will see the explanation to your question in the next book, but she has promised that we will eventually understand.

Good God, how long can this saga go on!! As much as I love them, I know that in the last book I was really ready for the next book. I was ready for it to wrap up!!!

I just wish the gap between the new one coming out and the last 6 hadn't been so long. When the wait time goes to long, I start losing interest. I've already forgotten most of what I read.
