Outlandish discussion - Jamie Fraser & the Outlander Series!

I think it's an 'okay' series. I am a bit of a history nut so I found some of the situations in the books implausible. I realise that the books are fiction but I couldn't get past some of the situations that the characters got themselves into. Sometimes it seemed like the author was giving Georgian era people modern type values.

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro writes excellent historical fiction and she does a huge amount of research on each era that her books take place in. They are dark because the eras that they take place in were full of disease, hardship and relgious fanaticism of one kind or another. I guess what I am trying to say is that I like my historical fiction to be more anout history than romance.

Good God, how long can this saga go on!! As much as I love them, I know that in the last book I was really ready for the next book. I was ready for it to wrap up!!!

I just wish the gap between the new one coming out and the last 6 hadn't been so long. When the wait time goes to long, I start losing interest. I've already forgotten most of what I read.

lol and thus you have the pleasure of rediscovering Jamie an Claire :rotfl:

I agree. I have to say I feel lucky that's I've just picked the series up. I'm not sure I'm up to waiting ... and waiting... and waiting but they are so good!!

From Fiery Cross:
"I have lived through war, and lost much. I know what's worth the fight, and what is not.
Honor and courage are matters of the home, and what man will kill for, he will sometimes die for, too.
And that, O kinsman, is why a woman has broad hips; that bony basin will harbor a man and his child alike. A man's life springs from his woman's bones, and in her blood is his honor christened.
For the sake of love alone, would I walk through fire again."

I love this passage. And so completely Jamie. I asume Gabaldon wrote it herself, aye? *sigh* :lovestruc

I believe DIana has said that All Will Be Answered Eventually. An Echo in the Bone (upcoming book) is not the last book in the series, so I am not sure we will see the explanation to your question in the next book, but she has promised that we will eventually understand.

Well that sounds promising...

Actually, there has been quite a gap between each book. I waited a couple of years for Fiery Cross and then again for Snow and Ashes. Those books are MASSIVE tomes, and since I know that Diana does a HUGE amount of research for each one, it just takes her a long time to get each one out.

On the plus side, each release is usually in September. Echo will be released September 22... my birthday is September 24! party: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!

Hello fellow Outlander fans....I am a HUGE fan of these books - am half way through Fiery Cross.

Briarmom, there are currently six books in the series; the seventh, (and reportedly final) book, An Echo in Bone, is set to be released in September 2009 - according to Amazon.

FINALLY!! Although it is not as bad as the wait for the Clan of the Cave Bear series books--I started reading those in HIGH SCHOOL when I was my oldest son's age now and the last one STILL isn't out. I will have to re-read the Outlander books this summer because I don't remember enough to pick up the last one and remember who everyone is. :lmao:

It is fun to go back to the beginning and start over after reading all the books.
I just started re-reading Voyager yesterday.

I was watching tv last night and came across Constantine and decided to watch it even though I have it on dvd. So I'm looking at the girl and I think "Wow, she'd make a good Claire." SO I look to see who she is and it's Rachel W-something. :rotfl2:

I'm still looking for the perfect Jamie... Does anyone have any ideas for Bree or Roger or Frank or Black Jack?

I have read all the Outlander books and the exerpts on Diana's website. To me, every other book was sort of slow but important to setting up events for the next book. I love the characters in this series.

I don't think I would want a movie made based on Outlander. There are too many plot twists for a 2 hour movie. I just don't think a movie could begin to do justice to the book. I feel the same way about Twilight. The movie was a let down to me.

I'm a huge Outlander series fan as well. Actually went to a book signing and have a first copy/first edition of Outlander. :) My favorite of the series is Dragonfly in Amber. After that, well, they get a bit tedious. Here's my theory on why:

Diana has said that mystery writing is her first love. She always wanted to write exceptional mysteries, but the ones she attempted weren't good enough to get published. If you notice, she began to incorporate mystery story lines into the story of Jamie and Claire, wrapped up by the end of each book. I think these made the novels longer and a bit dragged out starting after Voyager. But I still enjoyed them, just a tad less.

Can't wait for the next installment.

I picture Black Jack like the bad husband in Titanic--can't remember his name. That actor is handsome and good with a sneer.

Ah That's a good one! I'll have to see if I can find him...

That guy would make a good Black Jack.

That guy would make a good Black Jack.

I read the above post about Black Jack too fast and thought that someone was suggesting Jack Black as the actor to play Jamie! Now there's an image...

I do love these books, but they are so complex that I forget so many of the details! I will have to do a re-read!:)

OK, besides Jamie and Claire, who is your favorite character and why?

I love Young Ian. He is so endearing. I love how kind he is, but strong as well.

Definitely young Ian. I like a lot of the other characters; elder Ian, Jenny, Roger, etc but I don't love any of them like I love Young Ian.

September 22nd! Ah, not only the new release but also Bilbo and Frodo Baggins birthday!
I hope to download the new book on my Kindle but I want a hardcopy also. The last 2 books I have autographed by Gabaldon by way of ordering the books from her local book store where she goes in occasionally to sign some copies. :)

Finally!! My fellow kinsman! LOL
It has been a while since I have read any of the books. If a new one is coming out then I must start rereading now. I have to read the whole series back to back, did this with Harry Potter too.
As for Jamie, I don't know. Someone with a true Scotsmen accent, tall, burly, manly! but not too pretty, Jamie is not pretty.
A lot of the guys from King Arthur could have roles.

I have no idea about Claire. I was thinking Kate Beckinsale too, I don't know, I haven't seen her lately.

Does anyone have the Outlandish Companion?

I never bought it and was wondering if it would be good to add to my collection of books.

I have seen the Outlandish Companion. I think I would really like it. Lots of definitions and info that is very helpful.

I would like her to make a new one since the current companion doesn't cover all of the books.

I am 3/4 of the way done with Breathe of Snow and Ashes.

It's killing me because Jamie has just been accused of something I know he wouldn't do!!!!!

I can't wait to see how it ends!

I have the Campanion book and there have been many times when I go to it to refresh how someone is connected or past info on them.
