Day 5 continued: March 17, 2010
We left off heading towards the Maharajah Jungle Trek with our Safari FPs in hand. Have you ever noticed wherever you may be in AK, the Tree of Life always looks amazing?!
For those of you who have done the MJT, you know the bat exhibit. Now, after seeing pics on the DIS before our trip, I was really scared about seeing them. They just look so gross! HA. Well, little did I know, this would be one of our favorite moments! Theres several ropes hanging out there
with quite a few bats hanging upside down all across them. Most of them were all wrapped up in their wings, sleeping. But not this guy. He was the star of the show. WARNING: ANYONE WITH A PHOBIA OF BATS- PLEASE SKIP THESE PICS:
He would hang there upside down
then one time, he reached up with his hands to hang up right side so he could
uh
relieve himself. It was so funny seeing him hang right side up so he wouldnt get anything on his face. HAHA.
They had these black buckets hanging that were full of food. Every once in awhile, a bat would wake up and make his (they were all males) way over to the bucket. When hed try to get some food out, it would end up dumping out everywhere. It was hilarious. Heres one heading towards a bucket:
THEN, on one of the ropes was two bats hanging there sleeping pretty close to each other. All of a sudden, one of the bats wakes up and looks around. He sees this other bat close by, scoots over to him, and attacks him. Then, he scoots back to his original spot and goes back to sleep. I mean, seriously, these bats were so entertaining! Across from the bat viewing area was this bat skeleton in a case:
Isnt that so weird thinking that skeleton is really those bats?! Things like that amaze me. haha. Also, sometime while we were at the bat exhibit, it started raining. But, it was not a long downpour, thankfully. We decided to give other people a chance to check out the bats, so we moved along. Soon we were walking and saw this guy:
It was so cool seeing one just out walking around. Usually, all we see are them laying down being lazy
like these two!:
But, the cool thing with these two guys was how close they were! I mean, they were so beautiful to look at. And that painting behind the second one is beautiful too, isnt it?!
Right beyond this exhibit was these guys:
We didnt spend much time checking them out because we were going probably to see them again on the Safari. Right at the end of the MJT was ANOTHER bird area. This time, a bird seriously flew past my head and hit my hair! It was crazy in there! But
we did get some good shots of the birds that were walking around. It was amazing seeing how close we could get to them. They were not afraid of anyone! And, their colors were just gorgeous; the pics do not do them justice.
This guy was drinking some of the water that was running through this crack:
We walked right up to him and he just kept on drinking
Then, this guy ran across the path in front of us and into the bushes. His feathers were amazing! Its like he stopped and posed just long enough for us to get a pic:
Really
Kristen
I might have to have you close your eyes and Ill hold your hand and guide you through this part. There were birds flying and walking everywhere. They were beautiful, it was just really overwhelming for little ol me
The orange on this guy was just so vibrant!:
And after we saw that guy, we made our way out of the MJT and back out towards EE to use our FPs. It was awesome being able to ride EE twice before it was even noon! And darn it, the Yeti was still not working. Hopefully they will get it back up and running by July!! We said bye to the EE area and headed over to the tea stand across from Yak & Yeti. I had never really noticed the stand until I read about it on the DIS! As we walked up, we realized that there was already quite a line. That told us the drinks must be pretty good! While we were standing in line, we realized that they were having troubles with one of the cash registers. So, we all had to order at one register instead of the two, which slowed things down a bit. But, this gave us enough time to check out the menu and decide what we wanted. They had cold and hot drinks. Since it was freezing that day, we decided to go the hot drink route. But, we are definitely planning on coming back and trying a cold drink in July!
With our drinks in hand, we decided to find a table and relax. All the tables right around the stand were taken, so we went down a ways and found a few open ones. We were down the steps in a little area directly across from the entrance to Yak & Yeti. We were also looking out at the water that surrounds the Tree of Life. Since it was St. Pattys Day, I had a latte with Irish crème. Fiancé had a mocha latte. Both were delicious!

Our view of Yak & Yeti:
It was so much fun just sitting there, enjoying our drinks and each others company. We talked about the other things that we wanted to see at AK throughout the day. When we were all done with our drinks, we headed back over to the Safari to use our FPs. See you a bit, Yak & Yeti!
