SAP+ ?

I think SAP+ by definition means you would want home resort priority. SSR is definitely not it for me… don’t be cheap and pay the extra point for preferred.
I just classify SSR as SAP. In my eyes, VGF, BLT, PVB are the SAP+ winners. I would include AUL subsidized as well but as great as they are to use at 7 months they do not provide a backup plan if your desired resort room doesn’t become available. Ie I can book a VGF resort studio and switch at 7 months to a BWV pool garden one bedroom. Aulani only lets you modify your reservation to rooms at Aulani.

And copper creek!

If you think there’s a nonzero chance of selling the contract before expiration, buying a monorail resort - and Poly in particular - is the obvious choice for SAP IMO.

But the purchase price is really just a sunk cost. Emotionally, it can make you feel better about it, but the money is gone.
Huh? I can sell all my SSR for roughly what I bought it for right now. If I need to sell it within weeks, I can cut the price a few hundred dollars. SSR is constantly changing hands. The money isn't "gone" at all, this is as liquid as real estate gets. It's harder to move higher priced contracts, and they swing more in price over time. Good old SSR stays the same.

Except each year, it's highly possible for value to drop as the contract has less years remaining.

For the majority of families, yes.

If you are a family of five though you can't reserve a studio or 1 bedroom and then switch at 7 months to a different location as easy.
You have to book a 2 bedroom and then you could modify. That is tying up a lot of points if you are trying to get into a 1 Bed or studio that sleeps 5. Now if you want the 2 bedroom anyway then yes that CCV can certainly work as well.

The money is in fact “gone”. The only thing you “own” is an obligation to pay unknown maintenance fees in the future and the right to stay in a location or set of locations for a given number of years.

Having the ability to list it for sale in the future before that expiration date does not change that fact.

Nor does the price you initially paid for it or the historical price others have paid have any bearing whatsoever on what you may be able to sell it for in the future.

It's always possible for it to drop but SSR has stayed constant over the years.

2018 it was going for around $80-$100 a point and that is still where it is today almost 7 years later.
Right, but that feeling of historical prices indicating a future price is just an illusion. I’m not saying that it won’t, but there is no guarantee that it will.

This is correct.

With DVC, people don’t feel like it because its resale market has historically been healthy. But to be able to resell for a considerable amount, you need someone willing to take that obligation. There’s a reason other timeshares are given for free.

I don’t blame people for not doing it, but a personal level I consider it a sunk cost because considering a timeshare as an asset while ignoring the obligation part is risky in my book.

We had a similar SSR experience about 10 years ago. We stayed there for 4 nights and booked about 4-5 months out so choices were limited. SSR was not for us and when considering SAP+ points, BLT was the clear winner for us because we’d always enjoy staying there and never feel “stuck” if we couldn’t swap at 7 months.
Have you seen the refurb photos of BLT? The backsplash color in the kitchen is an interesting choice but otherwise it looks to be shaping up nicely. I really like that they just embraced MK (as they should) with the castle on the murphy bed and space mountain when the bed is pulled down. Also extremely glad they didn’t put the incredibles in there at least from what I’ve seen.

I keep having an internal struggle of whether or not I want BLT resale or direct Poly. I think my heart is at Poly so it’s probably now or never. I suppose I can always add BLT resale down the road if I ever wanted it but thise point charts are so much more friendly 😢

We too have really been liking the BLT refurb photos = it seems like they are doing a really nice job. When we bought our first BLT contract (resale), PVB was just studios and the bungalows. We always stay in the larger rooms so it was an easy choice for us. That said, what is the primary reason we have so many BLT SAP+ points? The answer: to stay for a week in a poly bungalow every other year.

LOL I’ve thought about that strategy too but I have a hard time swallowing cabungalow level points vs. a 2BR.

I need someone to do the math for me with resale BLT staying in a cabungalow vs. a 2BR in a tower for 3-4 nights a year. It shouldn’t be too hard but I’ve been lazy. But it’s not only that for us but the fact that we don’t want to be locked out of the tower either without home resort priority. Ugh, decisions decisions.

I had that same struggle and after seeing how may points I needed for a week at Poly, resale BLT won 🤣

I haven’t seen them…. now I am very intrigued!

We don’t have any strong desire to stay in the tower so the home resort priority at PVB is a non issue for us. If it weren’t for the bungalows, we likely would never stay at PVB but I also know that puts us in the minority of DVC folks.

I like them so far too. Definitely some pops of color and some browns, not just beige. Gotta keep the different resorts feeling like different themes!

The good news is that both will rent very well if you ever wind up with extra points.

Will you end up with extra points? If you are like me the answer is no, as I spend them as soon as I get them :)
