One time use points

I know you can't buy one time use points until 7 months out and the DVC website says they cannot be used for a waitlist, I am guessing this means they cannot be purchased if a waitlist comes through. So my question is if the points are already purchased in the original booking can I then waitlist and have those points transferred onto the new booking if it comes through? I am planning to keep a few regular points in reserve in case a waitlist requiring more points comes through.
