Oh, yes we are! **home from SSR, with pics and final thoughts, p.10, post 139

10 DAYS!!!!! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Where is the time going?? So much to do! I did accomplish a few important things since we last chatted. I was eligible for an upgrade/new cell phone, so while we were at Best Buy accomplishing that, I grabbed a couple of DVD's. The Doris Day one is for me. :goodvibes But I also picked up Season 3 of Gilligan's Island for the kids. They have the first two seasons already and love it. Those tv show dvd's are awesome for long trips! They can watch and watch. In fact, the first time we took Gilligan, they would sing the theme song every time it came on, even though they were using headphones...and it came up every 22.5 minutes!! :rotfl: It really was funny. I also have a few stashed away that I've been saving for months. Those will be surprises on the road. Also, picked up some glow sticks for the van and for night time at the parks.

That little bit of things collected warranted the beginning of "the pile" of stuff that is going to WDW. Yes, it will grow and grow. Also included are a pop up hamper and an air mattress. Not sure if we're really taking that or if the boys will agree to sleep together. Looks like something we need to discuss.

I also have our road snacks shopped for and collected on the dining room table. Can't put those on the floor with the rest of the stuff. Crazy dog will eat them all.

Tried to do online check in last night for Coronado Springs...only to realize I was two whole days early. :headache: Long weekends will do that to ya. So that is on tomorrow's agenda.

Mom and Dad received the ME packets, twice. Not sure what that was about, but now they have enough luggage tags to share with the kids.

Friday night's Disney Night plans never happened. Two of the kids went to the high school football game, one went to a sleepover and my DH did yardwork. Oh well! Tonight is free, I have some ideas floating in my little head. We'll see.

Up Next: Counter Service Poll Results

Our Family's Favorite Counter Service Locations

What are our favorites? Well, we had a lot of discussion. And still only 3 favorites. DD13's comment was that all the CS locations have the same food. To some extent, she's right. But, location can make all the difference! And there are some unique food favorites, too. So, drumroll please...

In third place...with one vote by me...The Earl of Sandwich!! Many felt that because it wasn't in a park it shouldn't count, but I completely disagree. All part of the WDW experience. And how could I leave out my favorite Caprese Sandwich? Tomato, mozzarella, yummy. Can't wait!
cs-earlofsandwich.jpg

In second place with two votes by DD13 and DS9...Sunshine Seasons! Both kids felt that it wasn't the food but the fun factor. That's where you go to wait for your Soarin' Fast Passes or the ever popular Living With the Land ride. DS9 plans to work at Epcot growing those plants, so yes, we do that ride every time! (Part of the reason I love it is because I remember it before the remodel. The cute little fair with all the umbrellas on the tables and the fountain that entertained the kids while we rested our feet. :goodvibes Do you remember?)

Have always loved the hot air balloons.

And in first place as our family's most popular counter service restaurant with three votes from DH, DS16 and DD12...Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe! We all agree that the food is delish. I do love the rotisserie chicken, such a nice break from fast food. The kids love the Sunny Eclipse show. DD12 loves how it has 3 bays for the different kinds of food, seems well organized to her. DH loves it for, I don't remember what he said! I'll have to ask him again and edit this later!

Honorable Mentions go to:
Pinocchio's Village Haus for the fun factor of watching IASW through the windows.
Flame Tree BBQ for the yummy food.
Main Street Bakery because they have cupcakes as big as your head.

All this talk of food...is it lunch time yet?

My MOTHER OF THE YEAR AWARD IS IN THE MAIL!!!

We are off school part of the week for Fall Break. Unfortunately, it is the week all juniors they take the PSAT. If you're not familliar with that, the entire country takes the PSAT on one Saturday, or Wednesday, both are the week we are in WDW. I knew it, but what can we do? :confused3

AHA! Call the local high schools and find one who will let him join them on test day. And I just secured one such willing school! :cool1: I have to laugh a little, poor kid. :rotfl2: Who wants to take a three hour test while on vacation??

Oh, the details never end do they??

I'm loving your report!:thumbsup2 We are going to take the plunge and drive down for February break (airfare is too high, and now that DS is in high school we are really tied to school vacations). Sounds like about the same length drive as yours, around 24 hours. You are super organized!:worship: We drove down about six years ago, but we had my DSIL to help with the driving, and the kids were younger and better travelers. We'll see how they do now that they're teenagers!

Looking forward to more!:goodvibes

Love the updates!:thumbsup2...we all love cosmic rays too...another of our faves is Electric umbrella at Epcot for the burgers! and of course Flame tree at AK is WONDERFUL!..The only downside is those pesky birds as its outside..;)

Loved hearing about your fave CS options. I haven't tried Earl of Sandwich yet and have heard wonderful things. We will definitely be going there on our Dec trip and will likely buy an extra sandwich each for the next day!

:welcome: You can do the drive! I know you can! My biggest tip for traveling with teens, well, I have two. First, plan your food well. You know how they get, but if you have some protein with you it's amazing how quickly they can perk up. Second tip is to have a converter thingie (I'm sure that's the technical name!) so they can charge/use their Ipods, DVD players, text on their cell phones and use their laptops. A well fed and occupied/entertained teen is a happy teen. :thumbsup2

Oh, yes, the pesky birds. Actually I was reading a thread about alligators this morning -sometimes there have been alligators at Flame Tree - and I'll take the birds over any alligator. :scared1:

An extra sandwich?? What a fabulous idea!!! I'm hoping we get to walk over to the Earl a couple of times from SSR, and I'm SOOOO using your idea. Thanks!

8 days left! :cool1:

Check these items off my to do list:

-printed maps from CSR to SSR
-completed Online Check In for CSR yesterday :cool1:
-completed Online Check In for SSR today :cool1:
-printed crowd calendar for October
-did the single digit dance yesterday (is that anything like the Single Ladies Dance? :rotfl2:)

And we finally found the last two Halloween containers in the basement with all the fun Mickey stuff from Walgreens last year. I had a stash of Pooh Halloween paper products that I bought years ago for a school party but never used, so we set the table for dinner last night. Our Disney theme park music CD's completed the ambiance.

Picked up those 3 Mickey votives at the Disney Outlet Store last Christmas.
IMG_8043.jpg

Not sure who rearranged the Ghost Mickey and Pumpkin on the left or how I didn't notice it till now. Oh well!
IMG_8044.jpg

Our traditional paper chain made out of WDW maps.

I love these guys. Gotta get some batteries for them.

Tomorrow is one week away!

8 days left! :cool1:

I love the pic. How wonderful. Seems like you are having so much fun just getting ready to go!:goodvibes

From one mom to another, I can appreciate how much work you are putting into this.:worship: Remember, plan a little something special for your self.:wizard:

What are your thoughts?

We are leaving some time Friday afternoon. :cool1: It depends on when DH gets done with work, but it could be 5pm or even as early as 1pm. WOW. That's a big difference in departure time. With a 24 hour drive, we like to knock out as much as humanly possible the first day. Knowing we're not great at driving after midnight...

Would you...

...make a reservation and go there no matter what?

...make more than reservation and cancel as you go?

...wing it and just call ahead when you know when you want to stop that day?

I have some thoughts, but would like to know what some other experienced travelers. Thanks for you input. :goodvibes

First of all, I love your PTR!! DH and I are 11 days away and it's nice to know that there are other people like us! :woohoo: DH has already started packing, however, we are flying since it's just the 2 of us.

As far as your ressies, I would just go an wing it! you never know when you may or may not stop and with the current economy...it's probably pretty easy to find a decent place to stop without having to call ahead and make a ressie. We will be at SSR 10/14-10/23! We will have to look for you!

I agree with wing it - we had actually considered driving and mapped out our route bringing up hotels at different times - for us lots of options - comparable prices and after calling nothing near selling out. I would stop about 30 mins prior to your absolute stop time and be sure there is availiablity!!

We did this once as well! The kicker for us was that the kid in question needed to take it in our region, so we had to juggle a little bit and were able to have him take the test in Indianapolis (we live near Minneapolis), so he took the test on the way home from Disney.

WHAT? What are you talking about? Why did he have to take it in your region? What difference does it make?? Oh, brother! I'm calling his school again right now!

4 DAYS!!! :yay::yay::yay:

We have accomplished a lot, you should be proud.

  • Every stitch of laundry was done on Saturday. Took us 12 hours. And when we went to bed, there was already another load that needed done. :headache: Isn't that always how it goes with laundry?
  • Suitcases are open and in the living room.
  • DD13 made new individual packing lists and 3 of us are packed.
  • Hotel decision has been made for drive down...drumroll please...and the winning city is Paducah, KY! That is about 10 hours from home, so it'll be a late night. But that makes the next day better and THAT makes the next day better. DH likes to plan, so we all got outvoted on the wing it idea, but thanks for the input. :goodvibes
  • Updated DS9's travel journal with a new cover and new pages and he's so excited.
  • Confirmed with high school that it is perfectly fine to take the PSAT in Florida. (See above source of mild panic in previous post.)
  • Ordered more pins on ebay for Mom and DS16. Pins are his main souvenir, he doen't really buy anything, so I guess that's okay with me if he wants to spend his money on that. Mom is also a pin fanatic, but plans to share with the kids, too.

Today's list:
  • Make appointment for oil change on van.
  • Confirm Lilo's reservation for boarding at the groomer's home. (Lilo is our nutty Bichon Frise. She's so nutty, she will never have a Stitch to be her friend, nope, no way.)
  • Target for pants for DS9 and socks for DS16 and black ink and transfer paper for Dweebie Day Shirts
  • Confirm what is needed for medicine bag - I know we need Tylenol, but what else? Note to self: do this before trip to Target. :thumbsup2
  • House is so clean...be a vigilant defender of it! I am returning home from vacation to an order filled universe or else! (Usually it looks like a disaster from the last minute scramble and laundry mess, hence the extra planning and early packing, etc.)
  • Empty camera card and charge battery.

Oh my goodness. All this and my regular work and chores...I am off to my day!

It's a wonderful feeling to have a really clean house to return to! Looks like you're in great shape!:thumbsup2

WHAT? What are you talking about? Why did he have to take it in your region? What difference does it make?? Oh, brother! I'm calling his school again right now!

Probably nothing to worry about for a high schooler. Our DS took it at age 13 as part of a Northwestern University talented youth search. I think that's why they had to take it in the midwest region.

:laundy::cheer2:WOW!!!! Love your TR!!
The photos are great!
We drive every Christmas and it takes us 18-20 hours, and Im happy to see another mom packs food in the van!:rotfl: Dh always says we should just grocery shop when we get there, but I like to accumulate items and take them with us so I dont have alot of shopping to do once there.

Love your Mickey Collage:wizard:

Oh, Liferbabe!! :welcome: I'm extra excited to have you visit me here because we enjoyed your AKV Christmas Tree last year when we were at Kidani!! Here is DS9 with it!!
IMG_6061.jpg

My family truly loved the custom little tree for AKV. Another example of why we love DVC...who else would have a Christmas Tree sharing thing? :goodvibes

And yes, we have food for the van. We'll still visit Walmart, but at least we've got plenty for the drive and even the first day or so in case we feel like hitting the MK first!

3 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yay::yay::yay:

Jakenjess...clean house is still standing and looking good. Could it truly be that we could leave on vacation and come home to order in the house??

Diane...I did indeed confirm with the high school that he is a-okay to take the PSAT in Florida. But get this...I still can't believe this...he got called to the office yesterday for a meeting. (Right now I'm thinking, "Can this story be any good?") Well, I guess it can be...in an "It's an honor to be nominated," type of way. Apparently the school has a grant program that selects the top 15 juniors (600 or so in his class?) based on their PSAT scores as sophomores to attend the hoity-toity-expensive PSAT Prep Class for free. They have a special one just for them. Next Thursday, when we are in Florida. The day after he takes the test. :headache: Seriously??!! Ugh. I plan to call said hoity-toity-expensive guy to see if he has a different class he could sit in on this week, but it's not looking good. Oh well. We'll have to trust the practice tests and online studying. Yeah, right.

Accomplished all of yesterday's to do list. Today was good, too.
  • Got the oil changed on the van.
  • Got the brakes adjusted, too.
  • Lilo to the vet for annual visit. Ouchie, shots!
  • Printed off info on the Culinary Demonstrations for the dates we are there.
  • Pin traded again...more pins arrived from ebay. Me thinks we have awakened the pin-trading beast a little early. :cool2:

More tomorrow. I'm exhausted, work was long today. And we are NOT staying up too late this week. Big long drive ahead of us. Sweet dreams!
