Official Wine and Dine 2016 thread

1. Shoot - I had detailed course guesses all worked out a while go, and I've since forgotten what I came up with, lol!
Since rD specifically mentions EP, AK and WWOS and omits DHS entirely, I'd say the half will make up some mileage in WWOS and maybe might use WS.
I'm down with extra distance in WWOS at the front end instead of later, BUT... course congestion could be epic.
10K only mentions EP, so I imagine it'll be the standard Jan/PHM 10K course.
5K will be the same as previous Jingle Jungle courses.
Agree with your 5K and 10K guesses. I like both of those courses so I'd be okay with that, despite the fact that this would be weekend #3 of that same 10K course.
I tend to think ChEar Squad is hugely overpriced and all it includes for W&D is some stuff and a reserved spot at the finish, not along the course.
YES, I so agree with this!! I think if you have good mobility and a knowledge of the WDW Transportation system and the race courses (which...we obviously don't yet), the ChEAR Squad is not really worth it...unless you REALLY want the included swag. :confused3

Today's 11 miles, since I missed it 2 weeks ago, is the longest I've run and is the first run that made me question why I thought doing the half would be fun. I know it will be fine for the race because there's more going on than making sure I don't step on slugs, worms and snails but it was rough.

This is partly why I usually only go to about 10 miles in training! The other half is fearing that I will break myself...I am taking this week to ease back into it. 2 miles today and 4 tomorrow. If my IT or foot feels sore I will push back the 4. I was a little under the weather and achey the last couple of weeks, so I am hoping that is why my 8 miler was so rough.

Way to go! I did 6 miles today, and plan to do another run tomorrow as a sort of Lumiere practice. Not sure of what distance I'll try to do, but it probably won't be more than today. I'm mainly going to use it for the back to back.

For Dark side challenge the only longer runs I did back to back were both 10k's and it was the perfect distance for prep!

I am so excited to see the course and find out about corrals. Hope they are out this week!

Also desperate for them to confirm the rest of the 2017 dates so I can make some plans.

Question for those who have down the WDW expos in the morning on opening day (I've only ever been late in the day when it was pretty calm) - for the expo to work with my plans on the Thursday I really need to go at about 10am when it opens. I know it will be crazy crowded. I'm not after a lot of merch or anything like that - but am wondering how long should I put aside to do the basics on a busy opening morning of an expo?

The only real issue will be the line for merchandise. Both to get into the area, and then to check out! There is a smaller merch area on the 2nd floor of the field house when you get your bib that was much easier to get into last time. For bibs, it goes very quickly so I wouldn't worry about that. Lines are only a couple of people deep.

I did opening for Princess this past year and it was a little nuts, but I did get what I wanted. I think the time depends on how much you want to purchase. I didn't wait long for merchandise at all for Princess. We spent too long at the expo, but had appointments for New Balance so that caused us to hang around longer. We were there till lunchtime at least. We did merch, bibs, but then had to go back for one of the t-shirts so that delayed us. And we ate lunch since we were there so long! Also for Princess, as I know some of the other expos did, it opened about a half hour early. This year I am hoping to only spend about an hour, hour and a half so I can get over to Epcot and eat around the world!

1. What are your guesses for what the course adjustments will be for the half marathon now that DHS is out? How do you think they'll make up that distance? (I'm sure this question has been discussed many times, but why not ask again?) No clue really. I'd love to see more World showcase. I just hope to avoid the congestion and other issues mentioned from Dark Side. Hopefully they learn from those mistakes.
2. What are your predictions on official event shirt colors? Any preferences? I'm asking this since I wore last year's shirt for my run today and was thinking about it. Green, purple, maroon.
3. What are your ideal weather conditions you'd like to see on race day? 60's, low humidity, a little cloud cover, slight breeze
4. If you could wish for any character appearances on course, what would they be? The rarer the better! I would love to see Remy and Linguine at the 10K. (The rats were out at last years after party if I remember correctly, but I don't think we got a picture with them.)

so my sister just found out one of the people she is couching in her couch to 5K class is doing the 5K jingle jungle, anyone know the best place she could go to cheer her on, and would it be possible to be some where about the 1.5mile and still be at the finish line? with out a car/

They haven't released the course map yet, but we're all assuming it won't change from past years. If that's true, this is the map:
image-6.png

It's not a very spectator-friendly race - they don't mention spectators at all in past event guides in the 5K section. I don't recall seeing any spectators except for in the parking lot during the first mile and at the finish line - no spectators allowed in the park from what I remember.

I think your sister's best bet would be to take the race transportation to the start and watch somewhere during the first mile, then head to the finish and see the friends finish. :)

I could totally see them making up the two miles that we are missing by skipping DHS and having us go through WWoS (behold my MS Paint Skillz). We're in there for 2-3 miles during the marathon, so there is room there (SO MANY TWISTS AND TURNS ARRRG).

My official guess: we start out with a few miles in WWoS, go through Animal Kingdom as usual (DISCLAIMER: I'm paying zero attention to what is going on construction-wise in that park :teeth:). Then we get to where mile 8 is marked in the above map - instead of going straight there, I could see them having us turn right (marked in red) and meet up with mile marker 11 (again, using the old map posted above and my MS Paint Skillz) and then follow the rest of the route through Epcot and to the finish.

2. I'm guessing dark colors - dark blue, green, maroon, black.

3. Temps in the 50s/60s with no precipitation!

4. My #1 wish for any runDisney race is Steamboat Willie! I don't think it'll ever happen though. :(
Your MS Paint Skillz are quite impressive. In reply to your comment about AK, I don't think the construction going on now will affect the courses at all. I think most of it is going on behind guest areas (the entrance to the old Camp Minnie-Mickey area where Pandora will be just being blocked off). There were walls around by Everest where the Rivers of Light seating will be (wonder when that will finally begin...) when we were there in March, but it didn't block off any guest walkways.

And Steamboat Willie as a character meet would be amazing! I don't see it happening either, though. :(

PLEASE let this be the actual change and not what I said!!! :worship:

(That wouldn't be enough to make up the entire distance we lose by not having HS, though...maybe WS + Epcot resort area loop, like during the WDW/Princess 10K? We can hope!)
How about a combination of the two, since World Showcase isn't enough by itself. Start off with about a mile in Wide of World of Sports, continue to Animal Kingdom, then to Epcot for the WS loop. I'd be good with that. :cool2::thumbsup2

2. Please, anything but navy blue! I, too, think purple is a possibility, and I sure wouldn't' be surprised to see rD's favorite grey show up for the 10K, lol!

4. Remy and Emile better be in France for the 10K!
I'm definitely expecting the changes to be solely within WWoS, so anything different, such as the addition of a World Showcase loop, will be a pleasant surprise. I wish RunDisney would take the comments about course congestion into consideration after the complaints from Dark Side (which who knows, maybe they did since it sounds like next year's course will be completely different - the start is listed as being Floridian Way).

Agreed about navy blue. I have nothing against navy blue, but last year's W&D shirt was that color, so I'd like 3 different colors for the Challenge. If they do blue, I hope it's more of a royal blue like the lighter blue on one of the medal ribbons. I'm definitely really rooting for purple, since it was one of the colors of last year's logo/event guide cover and kind of seems like a "wine"-y color. Which is why maroon would also be a good choice.

I think it's highly likely that they'll have to have Remy out for the 10K somewhere. Same with Lumiere for the half/challenge. Whether it's on course though or in the post-race area I guess we'll see.

Question for those who've done W&D before (or anyone else who may know): For the $15 gift card that we get with registration (1) Can you add additional $ to that card? (2) And, if so, where? Only at F&W or could it be done at other gift shops, hotel gift shop, etc?

1. The only WDW race I've done is the marathon in 2013 so I don't have a good sense of 10K and half course options but hoping it's not extra loops in WWoS.

2. I love the idea of dark, fall colors. Definitely a gap in my race shirt wardrobe.

3. I always hoping for 50s but recognize that's probably not super realistic for Orlando in early November. I'll be happy if it's dry and not a freakish heat wave.

4. Remy and Lumiere for sure! And any of the Fab 5 in fun costumes would be great, too!

I don't know for sure, but I wonder if you might be able to do it online. Once the card comes, try going to the Disney gift cards website (www.disneygiftcard.com) and under where it says "Manage Cards" see if you can enter the card number and update the balance. There's no reason to me why you shouldn't be able to load more money on.

EDIT: I take that back. I just tried it with my card from last year (yes, I still have it - the design is cute and I didn't want to throw it away!) but it says in the FAQs that online reloads are not available. However you can reload at any location that sells gift cards. So hopefully that means any merchandise location in the parks?

For my long run #1 this weekend, I ended up doing the half that I had scheduled. With all my issues with my Achieles lately I was just hoping to walk it and get the distance in...they had a generous 5 hour course time limit so I knew walking would be an option. Of course that was the plan, but I decided at the last minute (okay the starting line) to test out my week long rest and see how far I could interval. I started at a 15 sec run/30 sec walk. And for 3 miles that was working well...some discomfort, but not enough to make me stop and walk. I was feeling so good that I wanted to test out a 15/15 sec interval to see if 1. if I could do it and 2. if it was really faster...guess what thumbs up on both counts and for the next 7 miles I was doing great...then I hit the wall at mile 10 and ended up doing much more walking than I wanted the last 3 miles. BUT THE BEST NEWS IS THAT....I PRed by over 10 minutes and almost made the goal I set for myself when I started doing half marathons. Sunday, I walked 6 miles to get in the second long run of the week...sore, sore, sore. Now to hold myself back and not push it on my ankle more than I have too the next 4 weeks.

Course: I hope we do more World Showcase, but unlikely with park opening...I bet we see more WWOS (boo hiss).
T-Shirt: Love wine colored anything...purples/reds
Weather: 60s by end of race with a breeze
Characters: Not really a character person...and dont have time to waste in a line waiting.

So just had the bomb dropped on me last week that with Dsis's new job she won't be done with work till 7 Friday night and won't be at the hotel till near 9pm.... so much for getting to the expo at open Friday and any hope of getting merch aside from my pre ordered tervis ( thankfully I have someone taking me to the expo around 2 or 3 but sis will have to get her stuff day of for the 10k) and so much for early bedtime as DSis and soon to be DBil want to get dinner when they arrive

I'm thinking WS would be GOOD for Disney to use to make up some distance. They used to have to keep runners out of WS because it was used for the after party. That is no longer the case since the race is a morning race and the party is later.

Also, about park opening... The January marathon goes through there when the park is open and there is no real problem. Since most of WS doesn't even open until 11:00, the W&D half-marathon should be almost over before park crowds get there. What other reasons are there that WS wouldn't be used that I haven't thought of?

I'm jealous because I'm not running W&D this year, but I hope the course will be awesome for you all!

Running the 5K, if my sister who is staying off property wants to see us when we finish, does she need to pay to park at AK? We will be leaving after the race, I am staying at BWV. Also any suggestions on what time we should plan to catch the bus to go to the race. Thanks appreciate your help for a first timer!

I've never had anyone at the parking booths of the 5K, so there shouldn't be any payment required. As for the bus, I would say the earlier the better for the 5K. There are character photo ops and quite a fun and lively atmosphere before a 5K. And being your first time, you don't want to under estimate the security/bag check/port-a-potty lines.

This is what I am thinking/hoping for the end of the race.

The RED line is what I recall running the past couple of years.
The GREEN is what I am hoping for (adding a loop around World Showcase Lagoon instead of just the one flower bed).
The YELLOW would be similar to the Marathon Course, joining the past course with a partial (10/11) tour around World Showcase Lagoon.

Man, I hope you're right.

Did we even get that far into Epcot during W&D (red line)? I don't remember doing that turnaround, I remember doing this and not being impressed by how little time we had in Epcot (though it made sense with the party going on):

You are probably right. They have started to blur together......at least we won't end in Millennium Village like the first year.

Question about the expo strategy. I probably won't be able to get there until around 12:30 or 1:00 on Thursday. Should I go to the merchandise area first and then get my bib and shirt? My one dream must have item is an I DID IT shirt for the 10k. Thanks for any suggestions. My first 10k and first RD event.

I'm curious, approx. how far is the distance of one loop around World Showcase?

OOOOOH, very good point - that could totally happen!

Nope, no pay to park pre-race at AK. Personally, I hate running late and rushing, so i always opt to go as early as possible, so my suggestion is to grab a bus when they first start running (we'll get that time when the race guide comes out). That way, there's no worry about buses being full or stuck in traffic - or getting lost. Every race, at least one bus seems to get lost...
