Official Wine and Dine 2016 thread

Oh I would love a purple shirt!
I saw they had a cast 5k this morning and the Big Bad wolf was out so he is a character I would love to see out. Yeah, Remy & Emile I saw in Jan during the 10k so wouldn't be a priority for me, but I hope he is out too.

To answer the questions above (I can't quote the post for some reason )
I can't really comment on the course as this is my only Run Disney event and I'm only doing to 10k. I hope it starts and finishes at Epcot to make things easier for my mom who is spectating.

Weather: I would love 60 with low humidity (I laugh at myself as I type that but I live in Houston so humidity is a way of life).

Characters: I would LOVE to see Remy during the 10k.

Colors: I'm agreeing with above. I'm thinking blue, green, purple, and yellow which would make me happy.

I'll add I'm so hoping to snag a Tervis tumbler or water bottle tumbler at the expo. Guessing it will be 1:00 Thursday before I get there so not sure what my chances will be.

1. What are your guesses for what the course adjustments will be for the half marathon now that DHS is out? How do you think they'll make up that distance? (I'm sure this question has been discussed many times, but why not ask again?)
2. What are your predictions on official event shirt colors? Any preferences? I'm asking this since I wore last year's shirt for my run today and was thinking about it.
3. What are your ideal weather conditions you'd like to see on race day?
4. If you could wish for any character appearances on course, what would they be?

I'll share my answers in another post.

1. I wonder if they'll bring us into Epcot like 2015 W&D, but at Innoventions, turn us right, and send us for a counter-clockwise loop of WS. That should put about a mile back in. Plus, those finishing after the park opens at 0900 won't have as much park guest traffic to contend with. I think another option may be to make up distance using the AK parking lots.
2. Challenge: Yellow
10k: Purple
Half: Blue
5k: Green
3. 55-60, with low humidity, light winds, and partly sunny skies
4. Remy and Lumiere

Followed up my 6 miles yesterday with about 4 miles today. I'm not sure of the exact distance since my Garmin has seemed off lately. It was probably a bit less than 4 miles. I know it's not anywhere close to half marathon distance, but the back to back aspect was was I was going for and it was fine. I'm going to shoot to do another back to backer the weekend of the 22-23. Getting excited but also a bit nervous for Lumiere!

@arbie_m I too will be getting to the expo around 1:00 on Thursday, assuming all goes according to plan. Our flight should hopefully get in around 9:30-10:00, and I plan to head to the expo not long after the Magical Express gets us to the resort. I'm not sure what merchandise I'll be going for, but I hope there's some good stuff left!

@PaDisneyCouple I definitely like that idea for a WS loop in Epcot! That would be so much better than Wide World of Sports. The previous W&D course had barely anything in Epcot, so extending that would be great. And there won't be the after party crowds to deal with, which is probably why they've never done that before.

Today's 11 miles, since I missed it 2 weeks ago, is the longest I've run and is the first run that made me question why I thought doing the half would be fun. I know it will be fine for the race because there's more going on than making sure I don't step on slugs, worms and snails but it was rough.
I hear you. This was me two weeks ago.
  • Knee/hip combo: BAD
  • Allergies: WORSE
  • Exercise asthma: HORRIBLE
Pretty discouraging -- was wondering if this one was really a good idea. I had to do A LOT of reminding myself that some runs are just worse than others, I still have time for training, my goal is to finish not PR or anything else, etc.

Last week was a little better. And this week was better than that.

Sending you *goodvibes*!

While we're waiting, does anyone want to take a shot at answering some random questions related to race weekend? I'm bored and thought maybe it would get some excitement going and make this thread more active. Here are the questions I'm posing:

1. I went back and looked...this is the press release from when they announced the changes: http://disneysportsnews.com/release...-2016-disney-wine-dine-half-marathon-weekend/

It actually matches what the runDisney website says. GASP!

Here is what I think they will do, using the old course map:
29592682624_c28cb0518d_o.png

I could totally see them making up the two miles that we are missing by skipping DHS and having us go through WWoS (behold my MS Paint Skillz). We're in there for 2-3 miles during the marathon, so there is room there (SO MANY TWISTS AND TURNS ARRRG).

My official guess: we start out with a few miles in WWoS, go through Animal Kingdom as usual (DISCLAIMER: I'm paying zero attention to what is going on construction-wise in that park :teeth:). Then we get to where mile 8 is marked in the above map - instead of going straight there, I could see them having us turn right (marked in red) and meet up with mile marker 11 (again, using the old map posted above and my MS Paint Skillz) and then follow the rest of the route through Epcot and to the finish.

2. I'm guessing dark colors - dark blue, green, maroon, black.

3. Temps in the 50s/60s with no precipitation!

4. My #1 wish for any runDisney race is Steamboat Willie! I don't think it'll ever happen though. :(

Hi all! I've stayed away while I honestly had nothing good to report -- slow, awful training mostly. Hip/knee things kicking up, upper back issues, cold after cold, bad allergies, etc.

My sister registered me for the Army 10-miler as a bday gift, and as recently as Friday -- TWO DAYS BEFORE THE RACE -- I was thinking I'd have to bail on it. I'd started PT again to help loosen things up, etc. but wasn't sure it had been enough.

I decided to give it a shot -- do my best -- and if I couldn't finish, I'd just deal with it. Well, today was a good day, and I actually PR'd!! Crazy!!

I guess it shows that perseverance, encouragement from my sister, and a great PT (!!) can really pay off!! :)

This was my first long non-Disney race, and I was honestly intimidated. But it went well.

Oh... and something FUNNY... I was joking with my sister that I wasn't sure I could do a race without Disney characters along the route!! Well... about 7 miles in, there was a guy on the side of the road dressed like Mr. Incredible, blasting music and cheering for the runners!! :rotfl2::rotfl: Made my day!!

Thank you for this and you are right some runs will just be worse than others. I want to finish, have fun and enjoy it. It will be a PR because I don't plan to ever do a half again :) My running sweet spot is 4 to 6 miles, that's where I can enjoy what I'm doing if I'm running alone.

My hips hadn't been bothering me in the last few runs until yesterday. Though I think part of that was not running for 3 weeks and then doing 2 maintenance runs of about 1.5 each this past week without pain and then going into the long run. Could my body handle the 11 miles, yes, should I have probably done something shorter like 4 to 6, yes, but I'm stubborn so I did the 11 because I knew I could.

I think my biggest issue after seeing how the rest of yesterday went was that I really should have had my electrolyte water with me during the run rather than getting it at the store after. There's very few places around here that sell the Propel flavorless electrolyte water and the closest is a pain to get in an out of, especially after work. I could tell between mile 9 and 10 that I should have had more than just my fuel and regular water with me. Lesson learned there. Stomach ache about an hour and a half later so I took a nap and woke up feeling better but then didn't really want to eat and was tired the rest of the day. I felt a lot better after the 9.5 mile run. But I think I know what I need to do over the next 2 weeks so the 12.5 will go better.

For the questions.

I've never done a run disney race, so any course will be fun and give me new things to look at. It will be my first to wide world of sports.

Shirt colors, anything but yellow, orange or brown for the half shirt. I'm blonde, fair skin with blue eyes, I can't wear those colors :) I'm hoping it will match the ribbon, those are good colors. Or boring grey, none of the race shirts I've gotten yet have been grey.

I hope the weather is comfortable and I would be happy if it was cloudy so I wouldn't need to worry quite as much about reapplying sunblock mid race, but I have a plan in place! I'm going to put sunblock in a contacts container so it will fit in my pocket and I can toss it in a trash can. I get them free with solution often enough I have plenty.

I would like to see Lumiere or Remy for characters for the half as well. It would be nice if they were at the after party too. I'll probably have some time after i finish before my friend finishes to get photo's if there are fun characters after.

Oh yuck -- that stinks. :(

I get it. I always have 1 bottle of Nuun with me on longer runs and I feel like it DOES make a difference.

And I can totally identify with just "toughing it out" even if the "smartest" thing to do might be to run a shorter distance on a long run day.

I'll be sending you *goodvibes* for sure! I know that support here has definitely felt like it's helped me for different races -- especially my first long race, ToT 10-miler in 2013. :)

While I could see them adding the distance on at Wide World, that would be a mess though at the start with so many people and all the twists and turns. In the marathon it's spread out when we get there & some people are more worn out. Hopefully we do run around World Showcase instead, that old map has such little Epcot. Soon....soon we will know.

I had to laugh at your mile 8 comment - given that was mile 1 at the half of the half last year. Never before seen the time read 40 mins at mile 8! :teeth:

That's a good point. I too have been trying to figure out how that would work. They would
probably have to move the location of the start line, and I don't know how wide the walkways and pathways are at Wide World of Sports, but it seems like it would be really congested. I think it would be better for crowd control to send all those people out onto streets first. Which is why I love the idea of the World Showcase loop. It is the Food and Wine half after all, and more time than previous years in Epcot just makes sense.

Dear RunDisney, please just let us see the event guide already!!

Well, I decided to skip my last non-Disney race of the season. It was the Staten Island Half-Marathon. My IT has been really acting up, and although it hasn't hurt enough to really affect a run, I feel like I'm right up to that point. So no more running, and just a lot of stretching and rolling!

PLEASE let this be the actual change and not what I said!!! :worship:

(That wouldn't be enough to make up the entire distance we lose by not having HS, though...maybe WS + Epcot resort area loop, like during the WDW/Princess 10K? We can hope!)

1. Shoot - I had detailed course guesses all worked out a while go, and I've since forgotten what I came up with, lol!
Since rD specifically mentions EP, AK and WWOS and omits DHS entirely, I'd say the half will make up some mileage in WWOS and maybe might use WS.
I'm down with extra distance in WWOS at the front end instead of later, BUT... course congestion could be epic.
10K only mentions EP, so I imagine it'll be the standard Jan/PHM 10K course.
5K will be the same as previous Jingle Jungle courses.

2. Please, anything but navy blue! I, too, think purple is a possibility, and I sure wouldn't' be surprised to see rD's favorite grey show up for the 10K, lol!

3. 65* and 70% humidity for this Floridian, please and thank you :)

4. Remy and Emile better be in France for the 10K!

Question about spectators...we've never done a race at WDW, just Disneyland. In Anaheim, spectators can just line the streets, but at WDW what is the best approach to take? Is chEAR squad the way to go? Any information about how we should approach this would be great!
It'll be easier to say with some certainty once course maps come out, but in general, WDW can be tricky for spectating. You can cheer on roadways, but getting to roadways will be very difficult and will involve a fair amount of walking. For instance, people do cheer from Osceola Pkwy, but to do so they need to park somewhere else, like at the McDonald's, and walk up an on/exit ramp to the roadway. Any portions of the courses that go past resorts make life easier: simply get to that resort by bus, car or taxi/Uber. AK isn't a bad spot if you have a car - you can drive to the AK parking lot and cheer along the portion of course that goes through the parking lot. Ditto for WWOS - take a race bus there and find a spot along the course.
I tend to think ChEar Squad is hugely overpriced and all it includes for W&D is some stuff and a reserved spot at the finish, not along the course.
