Official Wine and Dine 2016 thread

This is what I am thinking/hoping for the end of the race.

The RED line is what I recall running the past couple of years.
The GREEN is what I am hoping for (adding a loop around World Showcase Lagoon instead of just the one flower bed).
The YELLOW would be similar to the Marathon Course, joining the past course with a partial (10/11) tour around World Showcase Lagoon.

Man, I hope you're right.

Did we even get that far into Epcot during W&D (red line)? I don't remember doing that turnaround, I remember doing this and not being impressed by how little time we had in Epcot (though it made sense with the party going on):

I do remember going through The Land area. And some more backstage. In fact, I remember thinking when will this be over! I was over it and ready for the party!

This is my first runDisney race.....
My mom will be bringing my kids (11 & 9) over from POFQ to watch us finish the race. My mom is not at all familiar with the bus transportation or layout of WDW. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on where should should go and when? We will be 'end of the pack' runners as we did not get a POT submitted. I'm assuming there is no reason for her to get up with them and head over to the finish when we're heading to start the race, right? I was assuming at a certain time (to be decided) she should take the Epcot bus??? and head to a certain spot early enough to find a place to sit/stand even if they will be waiting a bit. Is that how it works? Is there a suggested location to have them watch the finish or near the finish? We're not getting them chEAR packages.
Any advice is helpful and super appreciated.

Question about the expo strategy. I probably won't be able to get there until around 12:30 or 1:00 on Thursday. Should I go to the merchandise area first and then get my bib and shirt? My one dream must have item is an I DID IT shirt for the 10k. Thanks for any suggestions. My first 10k and first RD event.

There were still "I did it" t-shirts available for both the 5K and the Half in Paris until after the half marathon was finished (that's when I bought mine). I am not sure it will sell out immediately.

I'm curious, approx. how far is the distance of one loop around World Showcase?
Plotting it on Runkeeper, I get 1.01 miles. Now, that's only WS, not including any of Future World.

Are you talking about the half-marathon? If so, yes, she can wait a bit to grab a bus instead of leaving with you for the start. There will be race buses running to EP and they let off at the start/finish area. Seeing you cross the finish could be tricky - just depends on how big the crowd is at the finish line. The later in the race, the lighter the crowd, though. She'll just need to arrive early enough to poke around a bit, find the finish line, and look for an open spot.

You are probably right. They have started to blur together......at least we won't end in Millennium Village like the first year.
I think the red part may be the WDW/Princess course:

If the merchandise is important to you, I'd go for that first. You'd have to go to the merch building, then to the other building to get your bib, then back to the merch building to get your race participant shirt.

If they're just coming for the finish, they can take the race transportation - it'll be clearly marked in front of the resort and there's less thinking required to do that, so to speak (as in, may be easier for someone not as familiar with WDW). :)

It's hard to say, though, until we see the course map. Normally there is a "spectator guide" in the event guide, so hopefully that will help!

Thank you! Oops, I forgot to specify WHICH race.....yes, I was referring to the half. We will be finishing later on account of starting near the end so good to hear that the crowds should thin out. I think near the finish is fine, not necessarily AT the finish line. To see us nearing the end (and for us to cross the finish and then head to meet them) would they like be INSIDE of Epcot or on the outskirts somewhere? I guess that depends on the final course map but going by past races, is there a place I could perhaps circle on a map to help her have some idea of whereabout to head when they get off of the Epcot bus? I don't want her all frantic in new surroundings while trying to keep track of a couple of kids! Its her vacation too after all :)

If it is after park opening, they will need admission media to be able to see you inside Epcot. There is a nice stretch near the end (yet before the finish line) where spectators can see runners, just as the exit Epcot into the parking lot area. (Assuming it is relatively close the same course as before).

Once the race guide comes out, you can get more specific, though the maps in there are usually pretty sucky lol! But we can help. :) The finish is outside EP, in the parking lot, so no need to go into EP - if she takes a race bus, she'll be dropped off in the right area. I usually finish pretty late and there's always room along the finish chute for spectators, so I'm willing to bet she'll be able to do that!

I already have vacation head, but I can do the 3 week dance today!! My left calf is still tight but runnable for the most part just annoying. I was just thinking once the course is released I want to pick a bathroom spot for the half...probably in AK just in case I need it. I like prepicking spots (well unless an emergency happens).

So no Dooneys for this one, correct? That's almost a good thing as it won't tempt me and give my wallet a break...

Question for the race veterans. When do they usually come out with the course map for the half marathon?

Lately they haven't released course maps until the race guide comes out (with maps in there) - anywhere from a month to a week out from the race.

I don't know for sure, but I wonder if you might be able to do it online. Once the card comes, try going to the Disney gift cards website (www.disneygiftcard.com) and under where it says "Manage Cards" see if you can enter the card number and update the balance. There's no reason to me why you shouldn't be able to load more money on.

EDIT: I take that back. I just tried it with my card from last year (yes, I still have it - the design is cute and I didn't want to throw it away!) but it says in the FAQs that online reloads are not available. However you can reload at any location that sells gift cards. So hopefully that means any merchandise location in the parks?

Thanks for the info! I definitely missed the part about them mailing the gift cards. I just assumed we'd get them at packet pickup. Oops!

Last year, at W&D, they had 2 runDisney stores: one in each building. We did not attempt to shop at the one where you get your bib. Anybody know if in the past the merchandise is the same in both (I assume it is)? Thoughts on which one may be less chaotic?

I was just thinking I should try and find last year's thread for W&D, and see what the link was for the waivers. Then, we can try to reverse-engineer it. I think it was via the results page on Active?

I'm thinking WS would be GOOD for Disney to use to make up some distance. They used to have to keep runners out of WS because it was used for the after party. That is no longer the case since the race is a morning race and the party is later.
My thought exactly. I totally understand why the course had limited time in Epcot in the past, but with the morning race and thus no after party going on during the event this year, more Epcot time to make up for losing DHS seems fair. If they're concerned about park opening, I don't get that, since the marathon has runners in WS way later into the day than W&D would. The only part of WS that would be open when the race is finishing up is Frozen Ever After. Keep runners in a lane on the side closer to the lagoon once the park opens and it shouldn't be too big of an issue.

This is what I am thinking/hoping for the end of the race.

The Wine and Dine course last year definitely did not do the red loop up to the World Showcase plaza. We cut into the park around Imagination/The Land and then it was just the quick shot through the middle like in the map @Ariel484 posted. We deserve more Epcot time this year - I was really disappointed about this part of the course last year, and they really should make up lost DHS distance with park time somewhere else rather than in WWoS.

Man, I hope you're right.

This is definitely what we did last year, not the out and back to World Showcase.

Back door link to waivers... anyone... waivers?... :tiptoe::surfweb::scratchin
Yes please! Did anyone else get the Stride email from RunDisney today and for a brief moment think maybe we'd get some info?

Thanks for the info! I definitely missed the part about them mailing the gift cards. I just assumed we'd get them at packet pickup. Oops!
You're welcome! And yep, the gift cards were mailed last year, and according to the RunDisney website, they will be this year too. It says 3 weeks before the event, but last year they came more around 2 weeks out.
